To defeat the dragon you will need: • Dragon food – hot rocks from the volcano; • Magic water – taken from Shark Lagoon; • Secret weapon – collected from Dilly‛s house; • Story – to read to the dragon. Only then can you collect the magic box.
Sir Kit is coming soon…
Year 3 Literacy Support (Y3LS) is a new Wave 2 intervention programme successfully piloted and evaluated in 2005–06. It features Sir Kit, who faces a range of challenges in his quest to defeat the dragon fiercely guarding the secrets in the magic box hidden on Dragon Island.
Extract from the evaluation report ‘There was agreement throughout the evaluation reports that the materials were well matched to children’s needs and abilities. Teachers and teaching assistants confirmed improvements in children’s self-confidence. This included their confidence in speaking in the group, answering questions in the group and whole-class situation [and] greater willingness to ‘have a go’ and to offer an opinion. Children were motivated to bring in related books and material from home and to take home additional work voluntarily. Some schools reported that children were developing greater resilience to stick with a task and to write at greater length independently. Others noted improvements in children’s ability to identify key ideas in texts and in constructing sentences orally prior to writing. Children were also applying their learning in whole-class situations.’ Some quotes from teachers and teaching assistants ‘I think the programme is excellent. It appeals to the interests of Year 3 children. It has developed the literacy skills and confidence of the participants.’ ‘After receiving the books for the next module the children cheered and wanted to go out and do Quest there and then.’
A fully published version, aligned with the Primary Framework (2006), will be published and available to order for all schools from late spring 2007.
