The second grade team believes in the importance of working together with parents to create a meaningful learning experience for all students. Communication The partnership between parents and teachers is an integral part of a successful year for your child! Ways I will be communicating:

Sign-up for conferences will be online. More information will be forthcoming.

Webpages • I will post all important information about our classes on this site, including regular newsletters and spelling lists. • You can access my web page through the DSISD main web page and clicking on Campuses. Select DSES and click on my name.

Attendance Please email me if your child is absent.  In order for an absence to be excused, the student must bring a note signed by the parent or email the office and me within five (5) days of the absence.  Include the date, teacher’s name, student’s full name and reason for absence.  When a student’s absence for personal illness exceeds four (4) consecutive days, a doctor’s verification must be presented upon the return to school.  An automated message will be sent to your home phone if your child is absent.  Attendance will be taken at 8:45 am sharp!  Please remember students are considered tardy if they are not in class at 7:45 a.m. 

BEE Book BEE - Bring Everything Everyday The BEE Book is a form of daily communication between the teacher and parents. Please look over the BEE Book everyday and sign your child’s homework log daily.

Curriculum The second grade curriculum is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). To access the TEKS from the Texas Education Agency’s website please visit www.tea.state.tx.us/

Curriculum Over view In language arts, to read and write independently, acquire information, summarize, make connections, use reference materials, such as: dictionary and encyclopedia, apply proper punctuation and able to write a complete sentence, spelling, and introduction of grammar.

In social studies, history of our local community, the impact of significant individuals and events, map skills, continents; American symbols, historical figures and local government.

In math, solve problem and process data; develop measurement concepts; master addition and subtraction facts; adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers; fractions; multiplication with sets. In science, the natural world through experiments and investigations about a collection of cycles; structures and processes that interact together.

Homework • You can find homework assignments in the red folder in the BEE book. • Your signature each day informs me that your child has completed any tasks listed. • Your child will have a spelling test each week. Spelling homework will be completed in the blue spiral each week.

Reading Second graders transition from learning to read to reading to learn. We encourage our students to read at least 10 minutes daily. Reading levels will be tested 3 times throughout the year. Library check-out will be once a week on Wednesdays. Please send your child’s book(s) that day.

Field Trip Information • All DSISD second graders participate in the same field trip. • This year the district has decided that we will be going on a Historical Tour of Dripping Springs, which will be an enriching activity for our study of the local community. • Our second field trip will be to the State Capitol. • More information will be sent as we get closer to the field trip dates.

Transportation Changes Make sure your child knows what their afternoon transportation arrangements are before arriving at school each day.

Remember to call the office for any last minute transportation changes.

Bus transportation changes will need to be submitted online and approved by the transportation department under limited circumstances. The transportation form is found on the DSISD website under transportation.

Other Information Snacks: We will have a daily snack time. Please avoid sending the “4 C’s”: cookies, candy, cake, chips. Sending a personal water bottle can help your child stay hydrated. Clothing: We will have outside recess as weather permits. Please send your child in appropriate attire -- remember tennis shoes for PE.

Birthdays: Students can bring individual treats for their classmates. Please leave treats in the office. Treats will be served at the end of the day.

Field Trips All parent volunteers will be required to complete a background check. Forms can be found in the office.
