General information
Application information
DuPont Afforia herbicide has been tested as a burndown plus residual control herbicide that may be applied preplant to soybeans. In field trials it has delivered:
The Afforia™ proposed label will include directions for use for ground or aerial equipment.

™
Effective burndown of winter annuals, dandelions and volunteer canola. Consistent control of the toughest weeds, including kochia, lambsquarters, marestail, pigweed species, waterhemp, common ragweed and other broadleaf weeds. (See the weed control chart on the back for a list of weeds controlled and suppressed and specific application rates/directions used in field trials.) Improved weed resistance management over glyphosate alone with two additional modes of action. Rotational crop flexibility. Excellent burndown and residual performance even under cool, wet spring conditions.
Rate application DuPont™ Afforia™ was tested at a rate of 2.5 ounces per acre.
Tank mixtures
Weed resistance When herbicides with mode of action classifications that affect the same biological sites of action are used repeatedly over several years to control the same weed species in the same treatment area, naturally occurring resistant biotypes may survive, propagate and become dominant in that area. To better manage herbicide resistance, it may be necessary to change cultural practices within and between crop seasons, such as using a combination of tillage, retreatment, premix products, tankmix partners or sequential herbicide applications that have multiple sites of action. Weed escapes that are allowed to go to seed will promote the spread of resistant biotypes. Afforia™, which contains the active ingredients tribenuron, thifensulfuron and flumioxazin, is a Group 2 and Group 5 multiple mode of action premix herbicide based on the HRAC mode of action classification system of the Weed Science Society of America.
Afforia™ tank mixed with glyphosate and/or 2,4-D provided cross-spectrum burndown at preplant as well as residual control.
Application timing Afforia™ was applied to soybeans in the spring, preplant, up to 1 day prior to planting. Studies have shown that Afforia™ should not be applied to cracking soybeans or after the soybean crop has emerged because severe injury or death of the crop will occur.
Formulation Afforia™ is a dispersible granule formulation, mixed in water and applied as a spray solution to control susceptible broadleaf weeds in soybeans. Afforia™ contains two active ingredients to broaden broadleaf activity.
2.5 oz/A Afforia™, 1 qt/A 4 lb glyphosate, 2 qt/100 gal Diplomat (adjuvant) applied May 29, 2013. Rush City, Minnesota (50 miles north of Twin Cities). Photo taken: June 3, 2013.

Contact control
Tribenuron Flumioxazin Thifensulfuron
Excellent burndown of hard to control weeds including kochia, lambsquarters, marestail, common ragweed, waterhemp and pigweed.
Residual control
Flumioxazin
Selective preemergence control and suppression of a variety of troublesome weeds in soybeans while providing recropping flexibility when rotating from soybeans to other crops in the northern states.

Crop rotational intervals with DuPont™ Afforia™ herbicide The proposed label will include the following rotational crops which may be planted after applying Afforia™ herbicide at the listed rate. Planting earlier than the recommended rotational interval may result in crop injury. Crop rotation intervals Afforia™ herbicide rates Crops

here Afforia™ was used on light-textured soils, such as sands and loamy sands, time to planting was extended by 7 additional days. Where Afforia™ was used on high-pH W soils (>7.9), time to planting was extended by 7 additional days. 2 Successful soil bioassay must be performed prior to planting crops. 1
Studies demonstrated weed control with DuPont™ Afforia™ herbicide at 2.5 ounces per acre Burndown control of emerged winter annual, summer annual and perennial weeds (partial list) Annual knawel Annual sowthistle Bur buttercup Canada thistle* Coast fiddleneck Common cocklebur*
Common lambsquarters Common ragweed* Common sunflower Dandelion Deadnettle, purple Field chickweed
Henbit Kochia* Ladysthumb Marestail/horseweed* Shepherd’s-purse Slimleaf lambsquarters
Sunflower Tansymustard Tumble/Jim Hill mustard Volunteer canola Wild buckwheat* Wild mustard
* The addition of at least 8 oz a.i. per acre of 2,4-D LVE was required.
Residual broadleaf weed control by pre-emergent application of Afforia™ (partial list) Dandelion Henbit Kochia* Lambsquarters, common
Marestail/horseweed* Nightshade, black Pigweed, redroot Pigweed, smooth
Pigweed, spiny Amaranth Pigweed, tumble Purslane, common Ragweed, common*
Shepherd’s-purse Smallflower morningglory Venice mallow Waterhemp*
* Kochia, common ragweed and waterhemp: Naturally occurring resistant biotypes of these weeds are known to occur. For residual control of these weeds, a use rate of 3.1 oz or greater of Afforia™ was recommended. For season-long control, a postemergence herbicide may be needed following a preemergence application of Afforia™.
