u The Southland Conference and Frisco CVB are working together on a new season-long promotion, the Road to Frisco. This will originate from the Frisco CVB’s various social media platforms. The #RoadToFrisco FCS Game of the Week is Sam Houston State / Stephen F. Austin at NRG Stadium in Houston (3 pm CT, ESPN3). u Three matchups this weekend pit two top-25 teams against each another: GAMES FEATURING TWO TOP-25 TEAMS (courtesy STATS): #18 Illinois State (2-2) at #1 North Dakota State (3-0), 1 pm CT (NBC ND/ESPN3) #10 Charleston Southern (2-2) at #14 Coastal Carolina (3-1), 5 pm CT #8 Western Illinois (3-0) at #15 South Dakota State (1-2), 6 pm CT (ESPN3)
Before he became a starter with the Los Angeles Rams, CB Trumaine Johnson was a star at Montana. In three games this year, he has 18 tackles, including 15 solo stops, and 2 pass break-ups.
u A total of 121 players from current FCS made opening-day NFL rosters. Every NFL team (but one) has at least one former FCS player. u Notably, just two teams in the Top 25 are idle this weekend.
BIG SKY -- The Big Sky Conference has four teams ranked in national polls, with Eastern Washington leading the way at No. 4 in the STATS
poll, and No. 5 in the Coaches’ Poll. Montana comes in at No. 11, in both polls, while Cal Poly is ranked at No. 16/18. Southern Utah is also ranked in the Coaches’ Poll, coming in at No. 24. Two Big Sky players earned national recognition from STATS last week, as Weber State PK Taylor Hintze earned STATS FCS Special Teams Player of the Week. Hintze hit three FGs, including a game-winner for Weber State. Montana receiver Jerry Louie-McGee was named STATS FCS Freshman of the Week, after catching 21 passes in a 42-41 loss to Cal Poly. The performance set a new school record, while tying the Big Sky Conference’s record for most catches in a game. This week’s Big Sky football game on ROOT SPORTS features the No. 4/5 Eastern Washington Eagles, as they host UC Davis. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. PST on ROOT SPORTS, as well as DirecTV’s Audience Network. Offensive: RB Brady Oliveira, North Dakota | Defensive: Tyler Collet, Southern Utah | Special Teams: PK Taylor Hintze, Weber State BIG SOUTH -- Charleston Southern began its Big South title defense with a 35-7 win at Monmouth this past Saturday for its second consecutive
and sixth overall 1-0 start to league play. The win was the Bucs’ 10th straight Big South victory -- the third-longest conference win streak in Big South history and one victory away from second-place. The record is 16, set by Liberty from 2006-09. Charleston Southern’s next opportunity for a league win is Oct. 22. Charleston Southern RB MIKE HOLLOWAY became just the second Big South player in league history -- and the first in a conference game -- to record a touchdown rush of at least 70 yards and TD reception of 60+ yards in the same game this past Saturday at Monmouth. He first scored on a 75-yard run, then added a 63-yard catchand-run into the end zone. Gardner-Webb’s DAVID MONTGOMERY was the first to achieve this feat with his 74-yard TD run and 73-yard touchdown catch against Southern Virginia on Oct. 24, 2009. Kennesaw State WR JUSTIN SUMPTER set school records with eight receptions for 187 yards this past Saturday at Duquesne, and posted two touch-down grabs for the second consecutive game. He is the first Big South receiver with back-to-back multi-TD catch games since 2013 (Coastal Carolina’s MATT HAZEL), while his receiving yards were the most by a Big South wideout since 2014 (251 - Gardner-Webb’s KENNY COOK). In just 14 career games with the Owls, Sumpter has 45 catches for 846 yards and nine TDs. Co-Offense: RB Mike Holloway, Charleston Southern | Co-Offense: WR Justin Sumpter, Kennesaw State | Defense: DB Dante Blackmon, Kennesaw State Specialty: P Christian Kinsley, Kennesaw State | Freshman: QB Daniel David, Kennesaw State
CAA FOOTBALL -- Richmond senior Brian Brown made nine catches for 142 yards and 2 TD’s in a win over Colgate last Saturday, and became the Spiders’ career leader in receiving yards with 3,178. Brown, who topped the UR mark of 3,101 yards set by Tre Gray, needs 178 more to move into the top 10 on CAA Football’s career list. Brown caught 76 passes for 1,450 yards in 2015, had 79 catches for 1,089 yards as a sophomore and currently tops the CAA with 27 receptions for 460 yards and 4 TD’s this season. He’s the first player in program history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns and is on pace to make it three in a row. Five CAA teams rank among the top 20 in FCS in turnover margin. UAlbany leads the nation in turnover margin (+13), Delaware is third (+8), JMU and Villanova are tied for 17th (+5) and Richmond is 20th (+4). Six teams are also among the top 10 in FCS in interceptions. UAlbany leads the nation with nine, Delaware is 4th with seven, and Elon, JMU, Richmond and Villanova are tied for 8th with six. UAlbany is one of only two 4-0 teams in FCS and it’s just the third time the Great Danes have started 4-0 as a Division I program. Elon opened CAA play with a 27-10 victory at No. 8 William & Mary last Saturday. It was Elon’s second win ever over a Top 10 FCS opponent and first since 1997. It is also the longest road winning streak in Ivy League history. Cornell is 2-0 to start the year for the first time since 2009. Dartmouth also improved to 2-0 with a 35-10 win at Holy Cross. Two teams appear in the national polls.
