The Lake
Eagle Lake sits at 5,100 feet above sea level and is the second largest natural freshwater lake in California. It has roughly 100 miles of shoreline and comprises approximately 22,000 acres. The Eagle Lake strain of Rainbow trout are specially adapted to the lakes alkaline water and are fast growing, hardy, strong fighting fish. The fish range in size from the 14-16 inch planters to the larger holdover fish in the 3-6 pound range with many fish growing even larger. The lake is surrounded by a combination of evergreen forests and cedars on the South end to high desert on the North. Land ownership surrounding the lake is approximately 50% U.S. Forest Service, 35% Bureau of Land Management, and only 15% private.
The Area
Located in the Northeastern corner of California there is plenty to keep you occupied when not fishing. Eagle Lake is located about 30 miles North of Susanville, Ca. and the area hosts a wide variety of outdoor recreation. Just up the road is Mariners Eagle Lake Resort offering boat and kayak rentals and hosts four concerts a year as well as a Beer Brewery Oktoberfest in the Fall. The surrounding area offers a wide variety of big game and upland bird hunting. Whether hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, birdwatching or photography there is a limitless variety of recreation in the area. The seat of Lassen county, Susanville, is located about 30 miles down the road with a population of around 18,000. The climate varies from wintertime lows in the 20’s to summertime highs around 90, but averages range around 30 in the winter to the 70’s during the summer. The 18 hole Diamond Mountain golf course is also located in Susanville. Airports are available in both Susanville and the nearby community of Spaulding.
