KEYNOTE SPEAKER: ALICIA FARRELL, Ph.D TRAUMA PROOFING: HOW TO NURTURE OUR CHILDREN'S GRIT, RESILIENCE, AND SELFCONFIDENCE We all want our children to be healthy and happy. Forming relationships, having discipline to accomplish goals and self-care is a good start. However, there will be times when life comes at our children hard and fast. How do we ensure that they have what it takes to create joy and happiness in the face of life's adversities? Come find out! Not only will you learn about how to nurture emotional strength in your children but you may even learn a little about your own self. It will be fun, interactive and very informative. PARTICIPANTS WILL: -Learn how to nurture grit and resilience in their children as a way to prevent trauma and build strength to carry them through life's adversities. -Learn positive parenting techniques that encourage children to be effective and independent problem solvers. -Learn the powerful relationship between thoughts, feelings and actions, and how you can use this knowledge to support your children's sense of self as a competent and capable human being.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS 1) BUILDING RESILIENCY AND OTHER SECRETS TO REDUCING DISRUPTIVE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR BARB BAYCROFT, LPC, EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPIST & PARENT COACH
We have become a culture focused on protecting our children from experiencing any discomfort that life can bring. In doing so we have left them woefully unprepared to deal with the stresses of life. The increase in the number of children diagnosed with an anxiety disorder makes it clear this is not working. We can’t protect our children from the realities of life but we can better prepare them by helping them develop the skills and confidence they need to face the challenges life as a human will bring. This is an interactive session so bring your greatest challenge/frustration! Participants will: -Learn how to use disruptive behavior as an opportunity to teach a skill and build resiliency in their students
2) SUPPORTING OUR DUAL LANGUAGE LEARNERS/ENGLISH LEARNERS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD JENN PERNAL, M.A. AND EMMA VOYTEK, M.S., CCC-SLP
This session will help educators and early childhood providers to develop an understanding of Dual Language Learners (DLLs)/English Learners (ELs). The information gathered from this presentation will lead to implementation of intentional instructional practices to best assist children in preschool through third grade who are DLLs/ELs. You will come away with resources, tools, and a new perspective of language acquisition, bilingualism, and cultural competency.
Participants will:
-Build shared understanding of the second language acquisition process and the benefits of bilingualism. -Develop an understanding of cultural competency. -Increase awareness of structures, standards-based resources, and tools used to engage diverse families and early childhood students.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS 3) WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU SUSPECT DELAYS IN YOUR CHILD HEATHER HICKEIN CARTIER, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST
This presentation is geared towards childcare providers and parents of young children who suspect delays in their child. We will discuss the referral and evaluation process of Birth to Three. If the child is older than 3 years, we will discuss the local preschool process of referral and evaluation. Participants will learn how to have difficult but crucial conversations, such as discussing suspected delays, with parents and caregivers. Time will be available for questions and case study. Participants will: -Know how to make a referral to Birth to Three or the local preschool for evaluation. -Know what to expect of a Birth to Three visit if a child is found eligible. We will discuss visits at home, in the community, and/or at childcare. -Feel more confident havinng difficult conversations with parents and providers when delays are suspected.
4) HOW TO TALK SO CHILDREN WILL LISTEN LINDA N. STUHLMAN, EARLY EDUCATION CONSULTANT
Communication is the primary way to get children to behave. Children do well at home and school when they have self control and are able to listen and follow directions. Children who learn listening skils are better at focusing and taking the perspective of others. Some children have social, emotional, physical or cognitive issues which interfere with listening. Participants will: -Learn how to set the environment for listening. -Gain tips on establishing rules and routine. -Recognize when a child has problems and learn about resources to help.
