History of the Marie Wilkinson Child Development Center The Marie Wilkinson Child Development Center, one of Aurora’s premier daycare and early childhood educational facilities, was founded in 1970 by Aurora’s premier civil rights and youth advocates, Mrs. Marie Wilkinson. The Center, as it is commonly called, opened its doors in the annex building of YMCA on Gale Street in Aurora. In 1977, the Board of Directors, purchased its currently facility located at 1144 E. Galena Blvd. The mission of the Marie Wilkinson Child Development Center is to provide assistance in a diverse area of education and charitable provisions to the underserved families and individuals in the Aurora area. The Marie Wilkinson Child Development Center provides day care services and a comprehensive developmental program for the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth of low income and other eligible children. These services are provided in cooperation with appropriate community agencies and organizations and together they work to meet the needs of the child and the child’s family. The Center is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of local educators, politicians, professionals, and community members. Our matriarch and founder, Mrs. Marie Wilkinson, serves as the President Emeritus and remains committed to the center and its mission. For the past 43 years, the Marie Wilkinson Child Development Center has been the centerpiece of the near-eastside neighborhood that has seen a myriad of transitions and progressions.
