LOCATION Suffolk County, Long Island, NY PROJECT SUMMARY The Eastern Long Island Project (ELISP) is the largest combined carport installation in the state of New York with over 21 acres of solar panels installed across six different sites. The combined 12.8 MW photovoltaic (PV) system feeds power directly to local electric utility, The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). Blue Oak Energy worked with a multidisciplinary team of engineering firms, contractors, and project stakeholders to meet various local and regional codes and standards. BLUE OAK ENERGY SCOPE Full DC system engineering for six distinct sites within Suffolk County. PROJECT GOALS The ELISP is a flagship project to demonstrate utilizing municipal district land ownership in the form of existing facility parking lots, and converting these spaces into large scale photovoltaic generation facilities. The goals for installing the carport system included creating system designs for each site that balanced system cost and energy production while adhering to local and national building, electrical, and fire codes. The DC system design included aspects to facilitate and aid constructability, contractor pre-panelization efforts, and the safe integration of facilities into the public environment. The project accomplished these goals, while minimizing the loss of parking area both in the final product and during construction. By employing array aggregation and segmentation strategies to harmonize with construction phasing, impacts to the public during construction were minimized.
