There are some new entrants to New York City's list of 70 Michelin-starred restaurants. The Musket Room received its first star in 2014 after being open for only four months. Chef Matt Lambert is from New Zealand and the menu focuses on his native cuisine with a wine list to match. And in an “only in America” twist, the restaurant was partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign. musketroom.com Another new arrival, Aska received its first star in 2014 and is an exercise in Scandinavian chic and sustainability from Swedish-born chef Fredrik Berselius (pictured left). The kitchen team work with local farms, hand pick many of the ingredients and all animals are ethically raised. There are just 24 seats in the dining room (at the back of an art gallery in Williamsburg), so you’ll need to book ahead. askanyc.com

DRINK Bars around Times Square have a reputation for being tacky tourist traps, but Bar 54 at the newly opened Hyatt Times Square is hoping to change that. The highest lounge bar in Manhattan, it sits on the 54th floor of the hotel with an open terrace looking over the square. The cocktail list features house-made syrups and locally distilled spirits with creations from famous New York mixologist Julie Reiner. timessquare.hyatt.com

Rei Kawakubo, the woman behind Commes des Garçons, has just opened a third branch of Dover Street Market in New York City. Stretching across seven beautifully designed floors, the store stocks well-known labels like Yves Saint Laurent, Prada and even Nike, as well as up and coming designers. It’s only been open for a couple of months but is already a favourite of celebrities, so you could bump into a movie star over a US$10,000 cashmere blazer. newyork.doverstreetmarket.com

One of the newest hotels to open in New York, WestHouse opened at the end of 2013 in Midtown Manhattan. It aims to blend the luxury hotel lifestyle with the residential comfort of a New York townhouse, and each of the rooms is designed to feel like a home – with a touch of Art Deco glam. Guests pay a US$30 (about A$33) per person per night “residents fee” on top of the room rate, but this includes breakfast, all drinks (including alcohol) in the two residents-only bars, in-room minibar, Wi-Fi, and digital newspapers and magazines. You could happily spend a day in the hotel and never need to pull out your wallet. The hotel has partnered with concierge company Luxury Attaché to offer WestHouse Attaché, a group of in-house lifestyle consultants who can organise unique and personalised New York itineraries. Rooms are priced from US$499 (about A$555) per night. westhousehotelnewyork.com Alternatively, if you’re looking for some old world New York, stay in one of the city’s original landmark hotels. The St Regis New York was opened in 1904 by John Jacob Astor IV (who would die on the Titanic eight years later) and has just finished a US$90 million refurbishment. All guest rooms have been refurbished and redecorated, and a new restaurant, the King Cole Bar & Salon, has opened. Rooms are priced from US$825 (about A$918) per night. stregisnewyork.com

FLY

The traditional gateway for Australians travelling to New York is Los Angeles. But the airport is widely renowned as one of the worst in the country with outdated facilities and huge lines for security and baggage handling. It is currently undergoing a renovation, but this can make it even more chaotic. A better route that takes no longer in the air is via Canada. Air Canada operates daily direct flights from Sydney to Vancouver and then onwards to New York. Vancouver Airport was named the best airport in North America in the 2013 Skytrax awards as well as the world’s eighth best airport overall. If you want to extend your stopover, Vancouver is within easy reach of some of Canada’s best ski fields, luxury lodges and animal encounters. The inflight offering is also superior to many US domestic carriers, with extras like seatback screens for all classes. Return economy fares from Sydney to New York are priced from A$1,819 and business class fares from A$8,221. aircanada.com

Mice and Men. Visit playbill.com for more information on upcoming shows. Further ahead, the Whitney Museum will be opening a huge new building in 2015 with more than 4,500 square metres of indoor gallery space. The building sits alongside The High Line with the area between the two becoming a large, sheltered public space. A series of rooftops will become outdoor exhibition spaces overlooking the city and the Hudson River.
