Executive Summary Oven dry wood, regardless of species, has an energy content of 19.2 ±1.9 MJ/kg. While energy content per unit weight is, regardless of species, quite consistent on a volumetric basis the heat value of wood is somewhat more variable. On a volume basis the energy content is affected by both the moisture content of the wood, which can vary from zero (oven dry) through to 75 percent, and the basic density of the particular timber species being considered.
