EDINA U10 HOCKEY
U10 Hockey Athletes & Parents, Welcome everyone to the Edina U10 program. For those of you who were involved last year, welcome back. And for those who are new to 10’s, welcome to traveling hockey! Teams & Coaches We plan to have five teams at U10 this season: two balanced A teams and three balanced B teams. The girls committee was fortunate to have many excellent coaching candidates to consider to lead our Girls teams. We are very excited Jeff Sorem & Jon Lowell will again co-head coach one of our 10UA teams and Tom Ewers will head coach our other A team with Matt Russo assisting. A sizeable group of excellent coaches remains in consideration to round out our A and B coaching staffs, which will be determined as the tryouts play out, but we will need additional volunteers. Jeff Sorem, Tom Ewers, Casey Hankinson, and Tom McConnell will lead the tryout and player evaluation process while the Girls Committee U10 Liaison, Mark Mason, will manage and oversee the process. We have also assembled a group of independent evaluators from 12U/Squirts/8U to help with the tryout process. The evaluators’ number one priority will be to make sure all athletes are given fair opportunities to showcase their skills and are evaluated thoroughly as hockey players. In the end, our goal is for each athlete to be placed on the team that is most appropriate for their skill and commitment level. We are well aware this can be a stressful time for many families. For this reason, we take our responsibility very seriously and will do everything possible to ensure each athlete is treated with fairness and respect. We are also committed to ensuring the tryout process and ensuing season is fun! Tryout Process The athletes will be graded at the first tryout session on Monday, October 23rd after which the girls will be split into two groups. The remaining three tryout sessions will be a combination of skills evaluations, intrasquad scrimmages and a variety of competitive drills. Please note, the coaches will move athletes from one group to another as we feel is necessary to properly evaluate everyone’s capabilities. The groups will be posted on the website after each session. Movement does not mean that any player has made a given team, nor does it mean that they have been cut from any team. We simply want to see the players in different situations, under different conditions and with different players. The tryouts will come to an end on Saturday, October 28th. Shortly after these Saturday sessions, all five teams will be selected, additional coaches identified (A & B), and rosters finalized. Once again, the EHA website under 10U Team page will post the groups and teams during the tryout process. We will make every effort to post the teams within 24 hours of the final tryout session. In preparation for the upcoming tryouts, we would like to offer a list of recommendations for the players and parents to consider. We hope that these recommendations will help everyone get through the next two weeks with minimal headaches.
Parents: Please make sure your athlete is dressed and ready to go on the ice 10 minutes before their scheduled sessions. NOTE: at U10 dads are no longer allowed in the locker rooms. If your daughter needs help with skates please do so outside the locker rooms. Please be sure to notify the U10 liaison of any injuries, sickness or absences as early as possible. Please be a fan and encourage all of the athletes. Encourage them to work hard and have fun! We are looking for parents (4-8 per session) to help make tryouts and grading run smoothly by filling jobs like running check-in, managing bench doors and staffing the all-important locker room mom position. Volunteer google doc is on the Edina Hockey Association website >Teams>10U. and also in the Email.
o Remember that parents managing bench doors should refrain from any “coaching” and limit themselves to words of encouragement. The only requirement for working a bench is that you be on the opposite bench from your player. We will need more parent coaches for the 10U teams. You may have been contacted already, but if you are interested please contact Mark Mason (
[email protected]). Tryout placement will require identification of coaches during the process in order to select teams. Please consider if you are asked by the Girls Committee Liaison during this process as we will need parent coaches for every team.
Athletes: Girls will be given a pinny with a number at check-in. Please do NOT wear any AAA jerseys or socks and please remove all AAA stickers from your helmets. Each player is to bring their green and white Edina jerseys (or other generic green and white jerseys if you don’t have an Edina jersey). Please be prepared to play multiple positions as the evaluators may want to evaluate different aspects of your hockey skills; when selecting a team it is important to identify players that have versatility and are able to adapt to changing situations. The most important thing to remember is to show up to the rink with a positive attitude and be prepared to work as hard as you can. Hockey is a game of mistakes and even the greatest players in the world make them. You will more than likely make a lot of mistakes during the tryouts and the only thing you can do is to keep working hard and do your best. You are also more than likely to make a lot of good plays during the tryouts and remember - HOCKEY is FUN! If you have any questions regarding the tryouts please be sure to contact your U10 liaison (Mark Mason). His contact information can be found on the EHA website. See you at the rink! Sincerely, EHA Girls Committee Jeff Sorem, U10A Co-Head Coach Jon Lowell, U10A Co-Head Coach Tom Ewers, U10A Head Coach
