GAME 15: VS. GANNON
STORYLINE
The Edinboro women’s basketball team hosts Gannon in a battle for first place in the PSAC West Saturday afternoon. Each team is undefeated in divisional play, the Fighting Scots at 5-0 and the Lady Knights at 6-0. Gannon is 17-0 this season and has won 20 of its last 21 games, the only loss being to eventual national champion Ashland in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. At least one of these teams has been ranked in the top ten in each of the last four meetings. Edinboro is 11-3 this year and is on a six-game winning streak. These two teams have split the last four PSAC West regular season titles, including Edinboro winning two PSAC Tournament titles and Gannon one. Gannon was picked to win the PSAC Western Division before the season, while Edinboro was voted to finish second.
SCOUTING GANNON
Gannon is off to a 17-0 start with only five of the Lady Knights games decided by less than 10 points. Jim Brunelli took over for Cleve Wright who departed for Miami (Ohio) after 11 seasons at Gannon. Brunelli inherits a veteran squad that lost only one player from a team that finished 31-5 last year. Offensively, the undefeated squad is efficient, ranking in the top five of every statistical category in the PSAC. Gannon is second in scoring at 78.9 ppg., which is also good for 29th in the nation. The Lady Knights are shooting 44.5 percent from the floor, third-best in the conference. Additionally, they are second in the conference and 33rd nationally in scoring defense (61.1 ppg) and fourth in the conference in field goal percentage defense (39.3 percent). They also take care of the ball, ranking second in the conference in turnover margin (+4.94) and first in assist/turnover ratio (1.19). The Lady Knights have three players that scoring in double-digits, led by Nettie Blake. The junior frontcourt player is pacing the team with 14.6 ppg. and also leads the team in rebounding at 8.5 rpg. Brittany Batts comes into the game averaging 14.3 ppg. The junior guard ranks first in the conference shooting 51.9 percent on 3-pointers. Batts also leads the conference with 4.0 3-pointers made per game. The reigning PSAC West Division Athlete of the Year is Jen Papich, who is third in scoring for the Lady Knights with 12.6 ppg. The senior forward is also second on the team in rebounding, pulling down 6.3 rpg, and leads team with 1.5 bpg, which is fourth in the conference. Senior guard Kelley Sundberg leads the team and conference with 5.2 apg and an assist/turnover ratio of 2.8.

nine points and tied a then career-high with 17 against Winston-Salem State. She now has scored at least 16 points in six games this season. Lindsay also has registered at least nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists in four games this year.
MAJESTIC MAJEWSKI - BACK-TO-BACK PSAC AOW
Valerie Majewski was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week following two memorable performances. Against Shippensburg, Majewski notched the fourth triple-double in school history with 25 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds. She followed that effort with a career-high 27 points versus Slippery Rock. For the week, she averaged 26 ppg, 8 rpg, 8 apg, and shot 51.0 percent from the field. The junior guard is one of only seven players to have a triple-double this season at the Division II level. In addition to ranking seventh in the PSAC in scoring and third in assists in the conference, she ranked 84th in ppg nationally and 53rd in apg heading into the week.
ANOTHER NOTCH IN THE BELT - SWANK RECORDS 475th CAREER VICTORY
Edinboro women’s basketball head coach Stan Swank continues to add to his impressive win total. With the Scots recent win over Shippensburg, he recorded his 475th win. Swank’s overall record stands at 477272 and he is averaging over 17 wins per season over his 27-year span at the helm. The Scots are now 88-16 over the past four seasons. Swank came into the season 13th among active Division II coaches in wins and is the PSAC’s active leader. The Fighting Scots have made the NCAA tournament nine times including one Elite Eight appearance under the guidance of Swank.
DARCHE’ BACK AND CLIMBING THE RANKS
After sitting out the first five games of the season and missing a sixth with an injury, Darche’ Jackson has been inserted back into the line-up. Her return to the line-up coincides with the Scots six-game winning streak. She has started each of those six games after dishing out 12 assists off the bench against West Chester. Jackson scored a season-high 15 points versus Shippensburg and followed that with 13 and 14 point efforts against Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst, respectively. The senior guard has 327 career assists, currently 11th all-time in the Edinboro career ranks and is only 12 assists away from passing Andrea Martre for 10th. She has also cracked the top 15 for steals with 216 in her career (11th). Jackson is only six steals away from reaching the career top ten in school history.
STEADY IMPROVEMENT
After being named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year last season, forward Aignee’ Freeland has had an up-and-down sophomore campaign. She has registered four double-doubles, but also has three games five of points or less. The sophomore forward is averaging 13.1 ppg and 8.3 rpg after averaging 7.6 ppg and 7.6 rpg last year. Since a 24-point outburst against West Chester, Freeland is averaging 8.8 ppg over the last five games. She opened the season with double-digit rebounds in four of the first eight games, but has not hit that mark in the last six games. The sophomore forward started the 2013-14 season with two dominant performances. In the season opener versus Urbana, the she scored 16 points and hauled in 15 rebounds. Freeland shot seven-of-nine from the floor in what was her third career double-double. Freeland would then have another double-double against Pitt-Johnstown, giving her two to start the year and matching the total number she had all of last season. Against the Lady Cats, Freeland had 18 points and 17 rebounds.
BACK IN THE PICTURE
Edinboro finished the 2012-13 season with a 22-7 record and were ranked 25th in Division II in the final poll. BACK IN TOWN
After spending a year and a half at the University at Buffalo, Valerie Majewski has returned to the area where she was a high school standout. She did not disappoint in her Fighting Scots debut, leading all scorers with 21 points while also adding seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. She leads the team in scoring (16.6 ppg), assists (4.4 apg), and steals (2.3 spg). Majewski went to General McLane High School where she finished as the school’s all-time scoring leader. She averaged 21.5 points per game with 1,800 points and also holds the school’s records for most three pointers made in a game (9) and points in a single game (42). During her high school career, Majewski was named Second Team All-State and also took Erie County AllStar First Team, All District 10 and Region Player of the Year honors. The 5’7” Majewski averaged 4.8 points and 2.1 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game as a sophomore. As a freshman for UB, she played in 19 games with one start and averaged 2.1 ppg. She started three of nine games last season for the Bulls and in all, suited up in 28 games with four starts at UB.
A SIGN OF HOPE
With her 3-pointer at the 12:50 mark in the first half at Millersville, guard Hope Mancini scored her 117th point of the season, which topping her career total coming into the season. The senior is averaging career-highs across the board with 12.2 ppg, 1.7 rpg, and 2.2 apg and has 158 points on the year. Coming into the year, Mancini totaled 116 points in 40 games. Mancini is currently third for the Fighting Scots in scoring. Her 40.8 percentage on 3-pointers is no only fifth in the PSAC, but 49th in the nation. Mancini posted the best game of her career against Seton Hill, shooting 8-for-14 on 3-point attempts and finishing with a career-high 31 points. The senior guard was the key to an 18-3 run to open the second half, as she scored 16 points in the first four minutes and eight seconds. Mancini’s 22 second-half points were more than she had in an entire game previously. Mancini scored 75 points in the first four games of the season, more than she has had in an entire season before. The Mayfield Heights, Ohio native had never started a game before this year, but has started eight of 12 games this season. Against Urbana in an 81-64 victory, Mancini received her first career start and replied with 20 points, a career-high for her at the time.
THE MAGIC NUMBER IS...
60. Over the past three seasons, when the Fighting Scots score 60 points or more, they are 84-7 dating to the start of the 2010-11 campaign, good for a 92.3 winning percentage. That number was not so magical to end the 2012-13 season, however, as the Fighting Scots scored 73 and 72 points in their last two contests and lost each. They did score 81 points in their season opener against Urbana to get back on the winning side of that statistic and followed that with 91 points in a victory against Pitt-Johnstown. This season, the Scots are 11-2 when reaching 60 points.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams will host Pitt-Johnstown that day in a PSAC West doubleheader, with the women’s game tipping off at 1 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 3 p.m. It will be a tripleheader of athletic events, as the wrestling team hosts the University at Buffalo that night at 7 p.m. Admission to all three events is free with a donation to the Breast Cancer Society. The athletic department will work in conjunction with the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. The sorority will also be accepting donations, along with selling bracelets and passing out ribbons and informational pamphlets about breast cancer.
COLLINS CAREER OUTING
Prior to this season, senior Katie Collins had contributed to the Fighting Scots as a defender off the bench during her Edinboro career. On November 23 at Pitt-Johnstown, the veteran guard provided a spark for the Scots in relief in an offensive way, scoring a career-high 15 points in only 14 minutes in the 91-80 victory. Collins also added five rebounds and three assists. The senior received her second career start two games later against Seton Hill and played a then season-high 21 minutes while scoring six points and adding five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Facing California (Pa.) on the road, Collins contributed 13 points off the bench, the second highest total of her career in only 16 minutes of action. The veteran guard also scored 13 points in just 14 minutes of action at Cheyney. She now has four games this season in which she has scored in doublefigures.
SOPHOMORE LAUREN HIPPO PROVIDING DEPTH
Lauren Hippo has served key minutes to the Fighting Scots off the bench in her short career with the Fighting Scots. Recently, the sophomore guard scored a career-high 20 points against Shippensburg. Her previous career-high was 12 against Clarion last year, a mark she topped in the first half with 14 points. This year, Hippo is averaging 4.1 ppg and is averaging 13.0 minutes off the bench. Last season, she played in all 29 games, including one start, and averaged 10.7 minutes per game. During the Scots upset victory over then No. 6 Gannon, she led the team in bench points as she hit three of her four shots from the field for seven points. She opened this season by scoring six points in each of the first two games and then pulled in five rebounds versus Seton Hill. Hippo has played in every game this season.

Allen has played in ten games so far this season while Hospers has made appearances in seven of them.
PSAC WEST FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Aignee’ Freeland was impressive in her debut season for the Fighting Scots and opened the 2013-14 season strong. Freeland was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year after averaging a double-double in her senior season of high school. Freeland averaged 7.6 points and rebounds per game while starting in 23 of 29 games last season. She also led the team in shooting percentage, hitting 52.8 percent of her shots. She also averaged more then a block per game, which was second on the team. She scored 20 points against California (Pa.) in the NCAA Tournament Atlantic Regional.
SENIOR CLASS SEEKING RECORD
Last year’s group of seniors, featuring Kerry Connolly, Kiara Brown, and Samantha Blazetic, put together a record of 94-25 over their four years, the best four-year span for any graduating class. This year’s group of seniors are looking to top that. The group consisting of Katie Collins, Darche’ Jackson, Morgyn Patterson, Meghyn Patterson, and Hope Mancini have 89 career wins, placing them just 6 wins from breaking the record. To go along with their 11-3 start this season, the seniors went 26-4 in 2010-11, 30-2 in 2011-12, and 22-7 last season.
WINNING AT HALFTIME TRANSLATES TO WINNING GAMES
Over the past two seasons, the Fighting Scots have posted a 27-1 record when leading at halftime, including going 9-0 so far this season. After not leading at halftime once through the first three games, the Scots have held the lead at the break in nine of the past eleven games. The two games they did not lead at halftime (Bloomsburg and West Chester) ended in losses and the Scots are 7-8 when trailing at halftime since last year.
FORCING THE ISSUE
In the season-opener against Urbana, Edinboro forced 28 turnovers and started a trend that has held through the season. When the Fighting Scots committ fewer turnovers than the opposing team, the Scots are 9-0. Stan Swank and his full-court press defense have become a staple for the Fighting Scots. Last season, they forced 642 turnovers, which ranked as the sixth highest in the PSAC. The Fighting Scots are fifth in the PSAC in turnovers forced per game, averaging 20.0 turnovers forced per game. They also rank fourth in turnover margin with a +4.50. The Scots have forced at least 20 turnovers in four games of their current six-game winning streak.
HOME COOKIN’
The Fighting Scots are 51-6 combined record over the last four seasons, giving them a .895 winning percentage at home. Last year, Edinboro was 13-1 in McComb Fieldhouse. Over its last 39 regular season home contests, Edinboro is 36-3. In 2011-12, the Boro posted an 18-0 record at home during the regular season before losing to Shaw University in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship, 70-53. The Scots had won eight home contests in a row before losing 59-58 to Winston-Salem State on November 25, 2013.

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY
Multiple players on the Edinboro women’s basketball team hail from families that have produced other NCAA athletes. Laurel Lindsay is one with a sibling currently playing. Her sister, Shelby Lindsay, is a freshman guard for Army and has played in ten of the Black Knights 15 games. In addition, their father Ted Lindsay played college football at West Virginia. Aignee’ Freeland also has a sibling that is currently an NCAA athlete, as her brother Malik Generett plays football at the Tennessee-Martin after transferring from Connecticut. Katie Collins’ father, Phil Collins, played football at West Virginia and her uncle, Rick Manning, was a centerfielder for the Cleveland Indians who won a 1976 Gold Glove after being the second overall pick in the 1972 MLB Draft. Freshman Lindsay Jahn is carrying on her family’s name for the Fighting Scots. Jahn is the daughter of Bob Jahn, who played football at the school and is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame. Her brother, Luke Jahn, is a manager for the football team and Lindsay’s aunt is Beth (Sorber) Hering, who played basketball and competed in cross country at Edinboro. Jahn is not the only player from a family of Edinboro athletes, as Raven Brown is the sister of Renee’ Brown, who is top ten in school history in points and rebounds. In addition to that, former Penn State and NFL wide receiver Eddie Drummond and Maryland defensive lineman Derek Drummond are cousins to Raven. Three Scots are related to current Edinboro athletes as well. Freshman Maggie Moore is the brother of current Edinboro men’s basketball player, senior Alex Moore. Additionally, Morgyn Patterson and Meghyn Patterson are twin sisters. Finally, Jasmine Davis’ father, Chris Davis, ran track at Louisiana Tech and Kylie Mason had a sister, Carrie, who played basketball at Virginia Tech from 2003-06.
CONTROLLING THE 3-POINTERS
Edinboro ranks third in the PSAC and 35th in Division II in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 36.4 percent. The Scots are even better defensively, limiting opponents to 24.5 percent from beyond the arc, tops in the conference and 12th in the nation.
OPENING VICTORIES
Edinboro has won seven straight home openers, including an 81-64 win over Urbana this year. They were led in scoring by Valerie Majewski, who scored 21 points in her Fighting Scot debut. Aignee Freeland also contributed a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Hope Mancini scored a then career-high 20 points as she hit four three-pointers. The last time the Fighting Scots lost a home opener was the 1995-96 season when they lost 106-90 to IUPU Ft. Wayne. Ever since, the Fighting Scots have won 17 straight home openers including 13 of those decided by doubledigits.
