Important Dates October 14: No School for students
Add 1 and 2 / Subtract 1 and 2: Use counting objects or a number line to reinforce that adding 1 or 2 is the same as counting forward, and subtracting 1 or 2 is the same as counting backward.
October 17 & 18: Parent Teacher Conferences
Oct. 20-24: Fall Break—No school. Class resumes on Tuesday, Oct. 25th.
Doubles: Learn the doubles facts such as 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9, and 10+10. A lot of other facts can be learned more easily if they know these answers quickly. Doubles + 1 or 2 more: By knowing 6+6=12, then a student can reason that 6+7 is one more than 12 (=13). So think doubles, then add one more. By knowing 7+7=14, a student can reason that 7+9 is two more than 14 (= 16). Facts of 10: Help your child achieve fluency by rapidly knowing different ways to make ten (6+4, 3+7, 10-6, 10-7, etc.). Since we use a base ten system, this strategy will help students with many other math strategies.

Here are some reading decoding strategies that can/should be applied by readers when encountering unfamiliar words. Look at the picture for clues and match with the first letter of the word.
Look for known parts of a word & chunk into parts. Ex.: can-dy
Jump over the hard word and read the words after it (using context clues). Then try again.
Get your mouth ready to make the first sound of the word. Back up and re-read. Try it again to fix, check for accuracy, or use expression.
Flip the vowel. Since the vowel has 2 or more sounds, try a different sound in the word. Str-e-t-ch out the sounds in a word.
research shows that how well students do in school depends a great deal upon how much their parents get involved in their education? You can become more involved by:
Joining local and national school/parent organizations like PTA
Supporting school extra-curricular activities
Volunteering at the school
Attending parent-teacher conferences
Communicating with your student’s teacher regularly, by writing notes, telephoning the school, emailing the teacher, etc.
Keeping your student’s teacher informed about events in his or her life which may affect his/her performance at school
By becoming an active participant in the parent involvement activities at your school, you will:
Serve as a role model, showing your child that you support his/her education.
Assure that you are aware of your child’s educational progress; thereby demonstrating how important that progress is to you.
Teach your child that your input at the school is appreciated and that you support its efforts.
