Founded 2005 Vol 16. Issue 10

Dear Families We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the Year 10 parents evening on Wednesday of next week. I do hope you will be able to attend as it’s such an important opportunity for us to work together to maximise the girls’ achievement. Yesterday, it was lovely to welcome former teachers and head teachers of our current Year 7. They were invited by the girls who were absolutely delighted to see them. There was lots of catching up over tea and cakes and a chance to listen our wonderful year 7 choir. We have traditionally held the event at this time of year but we know that it is tricky for girls going home in the dark. With this in mind, we are considering changing the timing so that even more girls can enjoy the event. If our primary readers have any views on the optimum timing, please let us know. On Friday of next week, we have a professional development day for staff so the girls will be able to enjoy a long weekend as there will be no school for students on that day. Yours sincerely

Year 9 Trip to UCL F o u n d a t i o n L e a r n i n g O p t i o n G r o u p Ta k e O f f t o Z S L L o n d o n Z o o !

The purpose of the visit was to plan and carry out a day visit to a London attraction, as part of their BTEC Travel and Tourism Entry 3 Award.

A group of year 9 girls went on an enjoyable trip to University College of London last week to learn how to debate. We learned how parliamentary debate works and how to support the proposing and opposing sides. When we first arrived we participated in a workshop, memorising the basic aspects of debating (such as how to formulate and express a rebuttal), learning the roles we would be playing in the debate and understanding what the judge would be marking us on. After going through the basics, we got in to groups within our own schools. A lot of us found it very difficult, since it is hard agreeing on the points you want to make and developing a detailed line of argument. However, my partner and I were really able to pull through and win first place, even though we were pretty new to the rules! Later in the day university students led classes with the other mixed schools. There was the option of going into a more advanced session, which most of us chose because we had practised in the morning and taken lots of notes. Then we were put into groups with people that we hadn't worked with or met before. The experience was positive because my partner was very collaborative and he really helped me understand the role I was assigned more clearly and we were able to put on a great debate. One thing I really loved about the trip was that we were allowed to see the campus and its buildings and explore their museums, which inspired us to think about our futures after EGA!

It was an amazing day, we saw lions, tigers, meerkats, sea horses, butterflies and of course the penguins. We learned some fascinating things during the day and all the girls had an amazing time. For example, did you know, you would not find a penguin in the same place as

a polar bear?! We had lunch in a scrumptious café. We watched the “Animals in Action” show which included Max the Eagle flying above our heads and novice ferrets being trained on stage. We planned the itinerary ourselves for our four hour visit in the zoo. We can’t wait to go again! Photographs and text by Foundation Learning Option Group

Vo c a l M a s t e r C l a s s P e r f o r m a n c e After weeks of rehearsals, our vocal master class group opened the Women of the World (WOW) Festival at Kings Place on Saturday the 21st of October. We performed a number of inspirational songs, which celebrated ideas surrounding women and empowerment. We had an attentive audience and a few members of staff even took time out of their busy schedules to come and show their support! It was an amazing experience a great opportunity for us to showcase the talent of EGA and contribute to our community. Sade Elufowoju

November - Make a Change! By Malika Abdulhamidova and Iman Hassoun The days leading up to The UK’s Children In Need Day are times for reflection and solidarity. It's the time when we begin to consider the bigger issues in society and what we can do (as a collective and as individuals) to make a change. In the UK over 3.7 million children live below the national poverty line, which is over a quarter of all children. 1.7 million of these children are considered to be living in severe poverty. A household living in severe poverty earns circa £8.25 per person a day or less. This is quite shocking when we consider the fact that the living wage is now set at £9.15 an hour in London. And this is only concerning poverty; we could also discuss the other disadvantages that some children in the UK are forced to endure (e.g. disability, illness, abuse). The UK is considered one of the world's most advanced nations, being part of G7 (along with the

6 other largest economies in the world, representing more than 64% of the global net wealth), yet some children's basic needs are not being met. The situation may sometimes seem insurmountable, but there are many things we can do for those in most need of help. We can begin with giving a pound this Friday towards the Children in Need Campaign for our non-school uniform day! There are also many things outside of school that can be done. For example donating clothes, or donating directly to the BBC's Children in Need charity. There are two donation points around Angel (only a few shops apart): Oxfam and Cancer Research. These shops are also, incidentally, always looking for volunteers. Not only will you be helping the local community, you will also directly improve the life of a UK child. You can genuinely make someone's life better and the change begins with you!

Year 7 Indoor Athletics Well done to the group of Year 7 girls who continuously impress the PE department with their dedication to our clubs and tournaments. This week in the Athletics competition nearly all competitors beat their previous results in the field events. Abigail and Rosa on Vertical Jump, Leah and Angel on Shot Put, Nergis and Rosa on Triple Jump, Sorcha and Cedra on Long Jump and Leah and Yuki on Speed Bounce. Two more rounds to go- let's keep moving forward!

On Monday 13th November, the GCSE PE class had the exciting opportunity to go and watch the ATP finals at the O2. The ATP finals are for the top 8 highest rank men and double pairs to compete in one of the last competitions of

the season. During the afternoon session we got to watch two exciting matches - a singles game and a doubles game. The class learnt a lot about tennis and the different rules between the two games and really got into cheering for a player!

Yuki Oyesiku has been the only student from EGA that has been competing in the Islington Running League this year. She has shown excellent dedication and commitment by turning up to running club regularly as well as doing extra running outside of school. Each race she is improving her time and her technique! Well done Yuki!

On Tuesday, one Media Studies GCSE class has the fantastic opportunity to spend a day with digital media professionals as part of BIMA Digital Day 2017. We were lucky to have Will and Mia from Golin, a digital media agency with clients such as McDonalds, Unilever, Tesco and even Manchester United. Will and Mia spoke about life within the new digital media industry, about opportunities in working in digital media, ways to get into the industry, what day-to-day life is like and the range of different jobs that exist. It really did show the Media students

there are many careers to consider in the industry if they are interested. After an informative session, students took up the challenge to create their own digital product in the form of "wearable technology". The girls came up with some fantastic ideas they then pitched in front of our guests, from jackets fitted with GPS trackers and thermo-regulating jumpers, to dresses with in-built social media notifications. It was an informative, creative and insightful day for all. Thank you to Golin and @ BIMADDay for making the day possible.
