THIS LOT REPRESENTS THE SECOND PLACE WINNER FROM THE RECENT HONDURAN CUP OF EXCELLENCE COMPETITION. IT COMES FROM A SINGLE VARIETY CATUAI THAT IS WASHED AND SUN-DRIED. The producer for this coffee is Jorge Alberto Vallecillo Yanez and this is not the first time we’ve tasted his coffee. Our cupping trips to Central America have highlighted his coffees before and so it seems he has a reputation of being able to produce some distinct and high scoring coffees. Honduras is an interesting country in terms of flavour profiles with many of them being sweet and balanced coffees with a nice zesty acidity. The COE competition seems to promote some unique profiles and this is what drew us to the El Matazano winning lot. The profile is complex and heavy with some fruity notes that are reminiscent of naturally processed coffees with some savoury notes on the finish. As expected from COE coffees, this quality of this coffee means that it works really well as both espresso and filter options. The final jury score for El Matazano was 89.94 pts.
