9 Credit Rule

Every student-athlete must earn 9 countable credits every full-time semester (Fall or Spring) they are enrolled in to remain eligible to compete the following semester.

18 Credit Rule

Every student-athlete must earn 18 countable credits in the regular academic term (Fall and Spring) enrolled to remain eligible to compete the following academic term. Part-Time Enrollment Credit hours earned during a term in which a student-athlete is enrolled less than full-time may be used to satisfy the 18 semester hour requirement only if such credits are combined with credits earned during a term that immediately precedes or immediately follows a term (Winter or May Interim) in which the student-athlete is enrolled as a full-time student. Credits earned during a part-time term may be completed at an institution other than the certifying institution.

24 Credit Rule

Every student-athlete must earn 24 countable credits every academic year (Fall, Spring, Summer) enrolled to remain eligible to compete the following academic year. Minor A student-athlete may use a maximum of 6 credit hours earned per regular academic term (Fall and Spring) towards a minor to fulfill the credit hour requirements for meeting progress toward degree.

Fulfillment of Minimum Grade-Point Average Requirements

To be eligible to represent an institution in intercollegiate athletics competition, a student-athlete must achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.000 prior to the beginning of each fall term. The eligibility of a student-athlete who does not satisfy the grade-point average requirement prior to the fall term may be re-certified prior to the next regular academic term.

Seasons of Competition

*A student-athlete shall not engage in more than four seasons of intercollegiate competition in any one sport *A student-athlete shall complete his or her seasons of participation during the first 10 semesters *A student-athlete is considered to have used a semester or quarter under this rule when the student-athlete is officially registered in a collegiate institution (domestic or foreign) in a regular term of an academic year for a minimum full-time program of studies, as determined by the institution, and attends the first day of classes for that term, even if the student-athlete drops to part-time status during that first day of classes *Any competition (including a scrimmage with outside competition), regardless of time, during a season in an intercollegiate sport shall be counted as a season of competition in that sport. This provision is applicable to intercollegiate athletics competition conducted by a two-year or four-year collegiate institution at the varsity or sub-varsity level. Exception—Competition in the Non-championship Segment. - In field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball and men’s water polo, a student-athlete may engage in outside competition during the segment of the playing season that does not conclude with the NCAA championship without using a season of competition, provided the student-athlete was academically eligible during the segment in the same academic year that concludes with the NCAA championship. In baseball, softball and men’s and women’s lacrosse, a student-athlete may engage in outside competition during the segment of the playing season that does not conclude with the NCAA championship without using a season of competition. Prior to participating against outside competition during the non-championship segment, student-athletes shall be certified as eligible (e.g., amateurism, enrolled full time).

Intercollegiate Competition

Intercollegiate competition occurs when a student-athlete in either a two-year or a four-year collegiate institution: Represents the institution in any contest against outside competition, regardless of how the competition is classified (e.g., scrimmage, exhibition or joint practice session with another institution’s team) or whether the student is enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies; Competes in the uniform of the institution or, during the academic year, uses any apparel (excluding apparel no longer used by the institution) received from the institution that includes institutional identification; Competes and receives expenses (e.g., transportation, meals, room or entry fees) from the institution for the competition; or Competes in outside competition as a member of a club team at a two-year or four-year collegiate institution, provided the institution sponsors the sport on the varsity level.
