Project Synopsis: Site: A ten-acre lot with an existing 1990s-era stone and cedar custom home set on a site that slopes down to a creek. The property also includes an 18thcentury barn.
Program:
Create a pool house addition to house a 30’ x 60’ salt water pool as a gathering point for this multi-generational family for vacations and holidays.
Solution: Architecture The stone base, piers, and barrel-vaulted roof of the pool house echo the forms of ancient Roman baths. East Elevation
The pool is located behind the main house at the basement level to minimize the new structure’s visual impact on the existing home and its visibility from the street. The curved roof lowers the height of the pool structure and its potential impact on the original house. The location of the pool allows family members to view the pool from a sky-lit pool overlook with glass railings just off the main home’s living room. The pool can be accessed by stairs through the basement or by using an elevator added between the two structures. Structure 34”-deep glue-laminated curved beams create the dramatic 50’ clear spans required to house the 30’ x 60’ salt water pool. Steel columns and beams hidden in the stone piers allow for maximum fenestration which permits the surrounding filtered natural light and landscape to be part of the swimming experience. Mechanical Systems A dehumidification system controls the moisture level in the building while air supply registers are located to “wash” each window with air to reduce the possibility of condensation. A geothermal well system minimizes the energy required to heat the pool and cool the air.

The barrel-vaulted roof form visually minimizes the pool structure while the slope of the site allows the pool to be tucked below the main house.
