• This is the 103rd season of men’s basketball at Elon. • The Phoenix made the move to Division I competition in the 1999-2000 season. • Elon is led by third-year head coach Matt Matheny. The long-time Davidson assistant took over the program in March 2009 after helping the Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, including five trips to the NCAA Tournament. • After two straight home wins over South Carolina and Rutgers-Camden, Elon won back-to-back games in Alumni Gym for the first time since victories over Davidson (1/20/11) and Georgia Southern (1/22/11). • The 2011-12 Phoenix is a youthful team with only one senior on the roster. Four sophomores and a freshman have each earned starting nods this year. • Lucas Troutman moved into Elon’s all-time career blocks list with two swats against South Carolina. The sophomore has 49 blocks in just over a year of action, 10th all-time at Elon. • Senior Drew Spradlin became just the 34th player in Elon history to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau with his 14 points against Rutgers-Camden. Spradlin currently has 1,011 career points. • Elon has been impressive on the defensive end of the floor in the last two games, both wins. Its opponents are a combined 37-of-117 (31.6%) from the field in those games. The Phoenix shot 40% or better in both games. Elon currently ranks first in the Southern Conference in field goal percentage defense (36.0%).
LAST TIME OUT
• Elon opened the night against Rutgers-Camden on a 20-0 run and never looked back. The Phoenix never trailed in the 87-53 victory and sophomore Sebastian Koch led five Elon players in double figures with 20 points. • Drew Spradlin was just one rebound away from a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. • Sophomore Lucas Troutman, Elon’s leading scorer this season, put up double figures for the third straight game. He netted 12 points in 14 minutes of action on 6-of-7 shooting. • Elon was impressive on the glass, turning 18 offensive rebounds into 25 second-chance points. The Phoenix also had 22 assists and 32 baskets and currently rank second in the SoCon with 15 assists per game.
ELON VS. PRINCETON
• Elon and Princeton are meeting for the first time in school history. • This is the first of three Ivy League opponents that the Phoenix will face this season as Elon and Dartmouth go head-to-head on Dec. 17 and Columbia visits Alumni Gym on Jan. 8. • The only SoCon opponent that Princeton has ever faced is UNCG with the Tigers winning both of the meetings. Elon is 1-4 versus current Ivy League opponents — the Phoenix got its first win over an Ivy school on a buzzer-beater victory against Columbia last January.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE
As there can only be one Phoenix at any time, please refer to the Phoenix in the singular.
1,000 CAREER POINTS
With a three-pointer in the first minute of the game against Rutgers-Camden, senior Drew Spradlin became the 34th Elon player to reach the 1,000 career point plateau. He currently has 1,011 career tallies.
AN ELON VICTORY WOULD...
• Give Elon a three-game winning streak for the first time since the 2008-09 season. • Give Elon its best start since the 2002-03 season when the Phoenix opened the year 4-1. • Be its first against Princeton and second against an Ivy League opponent. • Be Elon’s first road win of the season.
BEYOND THE ARC
Very little has changed from last year as the 2011-12 Elon team loves the three ball. The Phoenix currently ranks first in the SoCon with an average of 10.0 three-pointers per game. Elon hit a season-high 15 against Rutgers-Camden.
BABY FACES
Elon’s roster is made up of only six juniors and seniors. In the Phoenix’s first contest, 51 of Elon’s 67 points were scored by freshmen and sophomores. On the year, 151 of Elon’s 212 points have been scored by underclassmen (71.2%).
KNOCKING OFF THE GAMECOCKS
Elon posted the program’s first-ever win over South Carolina on Nov. 15, welcoming the Gamecocks to Alumni Gym with a 58-53 victory. The Phoenix had never beaten a current member of the SEC in its previous six attempts.
DEFENSE WINS BALL GAMES
The Phoenix defense was impressive in the win over South Carolina. Elon held the Gamecocks to 20-of-64 shooting, including a 3-of-27 performance from long range. Elon currently ranks first in the SoCon in field goal percentage defense (36.0%).
2010-11 TIDBITS
• Elon ended the 2010-11 season with a 78-60 loss to College of Charleston in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. • Elon finished fourth in the national rankings with 9.2 three-pointers per game. The Phoenix nailed 285 triples last season. • Lucas Troutman blocked 47 shots in his rookie season, a mark that ranked fifth on Elon’s single season list and first in the SoCon with 1.6 per game.

TURNOVER TROUBLES
Elon turned the ball over 25 times against UMass. That is the most turnovers by an Elon team since Matheny took over the reigns in 2009-10.
ELON DEBUT
Four new faces will suit up in the maroon and gold this year. Elon welcomes three freshmen to the roster in guard Austin Hamilton (Herndon, Va.), forward Ryan Winters (Denver, Colo.) and guard Kevin Blake (Toronto, Canada). These three all come from very successful high school programs — the combined record of their three teams in 2010-11 was 69-10. Elon is also happy to have sophomore Eghoesa Edomwonyi who sat out last year after transferring from Rice University.
EXHIBITION HOOPS
Elon hosted one exhibition game, dominating Washington & Lee 96-48 on November 3. Twelve Phoenix players scored in the contest with Jack Isenbarger leading the way with 20 points. Isenbarger and fellow sophomores Ryley Beaumont and Lucas Troutman all grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
BLOCK PARTY
With two blocks against South Carolina, sophomore Lucas Troutman moved into 10th place on Elon’s career block list with 49. Trout-

168 AND COUNTING
Elon is a fan of the three-point shot, averaging 10 per game this season. The last time a Phoenix squad did not connect from beyond the arc in a game was in a loss at Georgia Southern on Jan. 30, 2006, a span of 168 games.
STRONG START
In 2010-11, Elon’s four scholarship freshmen — Jack Isenbarger, Lucas Troutman, Sebastian Koch and Riley Beaumont — accounted for 40 percent of the Phoenix’s total scoring. All averaged double figure minutes; Isenbarger averaged 10.2 ppg; Troutman led the league in blocks per game; Beaumont started 10 games.
CULTURE OF WINNING
Elon’s last two freshman classes are no strangers to winning games. The seven players — sophomores Jack Isenbarger, Ryley Beaumont, Sebastian Koch and Lucas Troutman and freshmen Kevin Blake, Austin Hamilton and Ryan Winters — posted a combined record of 193-24 in their final year of high school, an 88.9 winning percentage.
CLIMBING CAREER CHARTS
Senior Drew Spradlin is currently sixth alltime in Elon history with 151 career threepointers. He is 12 away from moving into a tie with former teammate TJ Douglas ‘10 for fifth with 163.
REBOUNDING A KEY
Rebounding was a point of emphasis last season. The Phoenix went 9-2 in 2010-11 when it won the battle on the boards. Elon was +5.4 on the glass in wins and -9.2 in losses.
SPRADLIN PRESEASON ALL-SOCON
Junior guard Drew Spradlin was selected as one of the 10 Preseason All-Southern Conference team members by the league’s coaches. Spradlin earned the all-league nod after a junior campaign in which he avearaged 13.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. A starter in all 31 games, Spradlin shot 41.9 percent from the field and tallied seven 20+ point games.
A CHALLENGING SLATE
The Phoenix will play a challenging non-conference schedule that features a visit from the South Carolina Gamecocks to Alumni Gym and trips to NC State and 2011 NCAA Tournament participants San Diego State, Princeton and North Carolina.

Matt Matheny
Head Coach (3rd Season) Elon University Director of Athletics Dave Blank introduced Matt Matheny as the Phoenix’s 17th head men’s basketball coach in March 2009. Matheny, who came to Elon after serving on the staff at Davidson College for 16 seasons, led the Phoenix in the program’s 102nd season in 2010-11 – 12th at the NCAA Division I level and eighth in the Southern Conference. Matheny’s first season was spent establishing a new system and progress was evident as the team won the majority of its games in February and March. The new head coach started his career with a 91-86 win at Lipscomb, handing the Bisons their first ever season-opening loss in their home arena. The win also marked Elon’s first victory in the opening game of the season since 2005. The Phoenix swept defending SoCon Tournament champion Chattanooga and won an ESPNU Bracketbuster game for the first time since it began competing in the event four years ago. The season culminated in a highlight victory over perennial SoCon power Davidson in the first round of the league tournament. It was Elon’s first win over the Wildcats since the Phoenix joined the league in 2003-04 and first time in 15 tries. Last season, Matheny guided the Phoenix to 14 victories against one of the most challenging schedules that Elon has ever faced. The maroon and gold squared off with four ACC opponents - No. 1 Duke, Maryland, NC State and Wake Forest - and one SEC opponent in South Carolina. With the growth of the program, Elon has seen increased attendance at home games. In fact, four of the 13 games played in Alumni Gym last season were sold out. Following the year, the Southern Conference coaches selected senior guard Chris Long as a member of the all-league team, the first Phoenix player to earn all-conference accolades since 2008. The coaches also named freshman Lucas Troutman to the league’s all-freshman squad, the first for the program since 2006. A 1992 Davidson graduate, Matheny spent 10 seasons (1993-2003) as an assistant coach for head coach Bob McKillop’s Wildcats before being promoted to the associate head coach in 2003. After spending another six campaigns (2003-09) in that role, Matheny was involved in more victories that any other assistant coach in Davidson’s history.
The former Wildcat football and basketball team captain had been part of McKillop’s staff since August 1, 1993. During their time on the bench together, Davidson collected 310 victories – over 19 wins per season – with 10 SoCon division titles, five SoCon tournament championships, five NCAA tournament appearances and four postseason NIT trips. “We were looking for a leader with integrity, character and enthusiasm ... Someone that had demonstrated the ability to lead and win,” Blank said. “We were looking for someone that is committed to the importance of the co-existence of athletic and academic excellence, who has been in that environment and would understand what we need to do here at Elon University to maintain integrity in both areas. We landed on Matt Matheny.” Matheny, who was born in Shelby, N.C., and grew up in Statesville, N.C., was a threesport standout at North Iredell High School. While his intention had always been to go to Wake Forest or Duke, his plans were altered when he was recruited to play football at Davidson. During his college days, he lettered four years for Davidson’s football team as a quarterback and wide receiver and two years as a point guard for the Wildcats’ men’s basketball squad before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Following graduation, Matheny headed overseas to Germany to play a summer of American football. It was then that McKillop contacted him about an assistant coaching job, a position he didn’t necessarily expect would become his life’s work. Having always planned to go to law school after college, Matheny assumed the job would be a stopover before he furthered his education. “The more I coached, the more I grew to love it,” Matheny said. “A coach can play an influential role in the life of a college athlete.” His love of basketball and his role in it is evident by the success of the teams of which he has been a part. Throughout Matheny’s time on the bench, Davidson produced 10 campaigns of 20 or more victories, three undefeated Southern Conference regular seasons, 26 All-SoCon players and six SoCon All-Freshman selections. McKillop has touted Matheny on numerous occasions for his excellent scouting and ability to communicate the information to the players. Matheny was a critical part of Davidson’s memorable run to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight in 200708.
