FESTIVE SINGING
ENERGY ACTION OPPOSES EIRGRID
BY MICHAEL COGLEY
Tanya Harris, Luke Harris Kotras and Santa were among the many volunteers on Wexford’s Main Street last Saturday singing Christmas carols in aid of the Wexford Mental Health Association.
WEXFORD Energy Action has called for the controversial Gridlink project currently being implemented by EirGrid, a company Energy action deemed ‘heavy handed and arrogant’, to be halted pending a full review of national energy policy. Electricity company EirGrid has vowed to seek planning permission in 2016 for the new power lines, due to be carried on giant pylons across the South East. EirGrid have come under fire recently after a report by the Irish Farmers’ Association showed that the company did not properly engage with local communities
when implementing their energy policies. But the group representing up to 20,000 people likely to be affected if County Wexford is has remained opposed to the development despite the fact an independent panel is examining the possibility of having all or some of the line underground. ‘We are calling on members of cabinet, Ministers Paul Kehoe and Brendan Howlin to ensure that Gridlink is halted until such time as a fully inclusive debate occurs in relation to Ireland’s energy policy,’ said the group in a statement issued by spokeswoman Mary O’Neill.
