Syllabus

English 9B Course Overview English is the study of the creation and analysis of literature written in the English language. In English 9B you will study a variety of techniques to improve your reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar and mechanics. The instruction covers a variety of writing modes: creative, descriptive, expository, narrative, and persuasive. You will learn to understand your audience and purpose for writing and be able to assess and correct errors in your written works. In English 9B, you will also read and analyze a variety of genres in literature. This course places an emphasis on reading and writing letters and conducting research.

Course Goals By the end of this course, you will be able to do the following:             

Use visualization strategies and metacognition to understand narrative and expository text. Analyze the main idea of a written work. Write an effective persuasive essay. Summarize what’s important in narrative and expository text. Examine differences in perspective between characters in a written work. Use compare/contrast and problem/solution structures to organize your writing. Provide formal citations to give credit for ideas and words. Identify the purpose and style of different letters and write a letter of your own. Understand the goals of an assignment by organizing your ideas. Use graphics to help you understand the intent of expository text. Use a question/answer strategy to interpret narrative and expository text. Research a topic and draw conclusions from your findings. Support your arguments with sufficient evidence.

General Skills To participate in this course, you should be able to do the following:    

Complete basic operations with word processing software, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Complete basic operations with presentation software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Docs presentation. Perform online research using various search engines and library databases.
