Abrreviations Used

Worked from side to side, this entrelac skirt uses graduated units to create the shaping from the waist to the hips. By working in this direction, the color change creates a flattering vertical line. The color shading is created by working with three colors and using 2 strands held together.

Finished Sizes

The finished garment assumes approximately 1/4 1/3 will be overlapped as the skirt is worn wrapped. Measurements below are actual measurements of the finished piece, NOT the wearer’s measurements. The following units are referred to throughout the pattern by their abbreviation. “Base sts” is the number of sts within the unit. Turn after every row unless otherwise specified. NOTE: Unit size changes within the tier.

Left-Leaning Rectangle (LR)

Setup Row (RS): PUK base sts along edge of unit in previous tier. Row 1 and all WS rows: Purl. Row 2 and all RS rows: Knit to last st of LR, SSK (1 st from LR with 1 st from unit in previous tier). Rep last 2 rows until all sts have been joined.

Decreasing Left-Leaning Rectangle (Dec LR)

Setup Row (RS): PUK base sts along edge of unit in previous tier. Row 1: Purl. Row 2: Knit to last st of LR, SSSK (1 st from LR with 2 sts from unit in previous tier). Row 3 and all WS rows: Purl. Row 4 and all RS rows: Knit to last st of LR, SSK (1 st from LR with 1 st from unit in previous tier). Rep last 2 rows until all sts have been joined.

Right-Leaning Rectangle (RR)

Row 3 and all WS rows: Purl to last st of RST, p2tog (1 st from RST with 1 st from unit in previous tier). Row 4 and all RS rows: Knit to last st of RST, kf&b. Rep last 2 rows until all sts have been joined.

Right-Leaning Ending Triangle (RET)

Setup row (WS): PUP base sts along edge of unit in previous tier. Row 1 and all RS rows: Knit. Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl to last 2 sts of RET, p2tog. Rep last 2 rows until 1 st remains. Knit and count as first picked-up st for next tier.

Left-Leaning Top Triangle (LTT)

Setup Row (RS): PUK base sts along edge of unit in previous tier. Row 1 (WS): Purl. Row 2 and all RS rows: Knit to last st, SSK (1 st from LTT with 1 st from unit in previous tier). Row 3 and remaining WS rows: Purl to last 2 sts, p2tog. Rep last 2 rows until all sts from unit in previous tier have been joined, ending with a RS row. Pass remaining st over first picked-up st in next unit, or secure if final st.

Decreasing Left-Leaning Top Triangle (Dec LTT)

Setup Row (RS): PUK base sts along edge of unit in previous tier. Row 1 (WS): Purl. Row 2: Knit to last st, SSSK (1 st from LTT with 2 sts from unit in previous tier). Row 3 and all WS rows: Purl to last 2 sts, p2tog. Row 4 and all RS rows: Knit to last st, SSK (1 st from LTT with 1 st from unit in previous tier). Rep last 2 rows until all sts from unit in previous tier have been joined, ending with a RS row. Pass remaining st over first picked-up st in next unit, or secure if final st.

Pattern Notes

This pattern starts at the button overlap and is worked side to side. Project is worked double strand. Color combinations are defined by two letters, each representing a color of yarn. Drop one color and add a new color at the end of each tier.

Adjusting Length

Skirt length can be adjusted by adding/subtracting a 13-st rectangle to/from each tier. Each unit will adjust the length by approximately 4”. Please remember: length adjustments will also change yardage requirements.

Entrelac Wrap

Tier 1: With AA, CO 9 sts. Starting with a WS row, work 18 rows of Stockinette. Without breaking yarn, CO 11 sts. Starting with a WS row, work 22 rows of Stockinette. *Without breaking yarn, CO 13 sts. Starting with a WS row, work 26 rows of Stockinette. Rep from * 3 more times - 6 units, 72 sts. Tier 2: With AB, work RST, work 3 RR with 13 base sts, work RR with 12 base sts, work RR with 10 base sts, work RET with 8 base sts. Tier 3: With BB, work Dec LR with 9 base sts, work Dec LR with 11 base sts, work 4 LR with 13 base sts. Tier 4: With BC, rep Tier 2. Tier 5: With CC, rep Tier 3. Tier 6: Rep Tier 4. Tier 7: Rep Tier 3. Tier 8: Rep Tier 2. Tier 9: With AA, rep Tier 3. Rep Tiers 2 - 9 until Tier 22 (26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46) is complete. Button Flap Edging and Buttonholes

Finishing

Each edging is worked separately to simplify the construction.

Hem Edging

With AA, PUK 20 sts across each triangle along hem edge. Work 4 rows of Reverse Stockinette. Loosely BO all sts on next row.

Waist Edging

With AA, PUK 12 sts across each triangle along waist edge. Work 4 rows of Reverse Stockinette. BO all sts on next row.

Inside Flap Edging

With AA, PUK 2 sts across previously completed edging and 3 sts for every 4 rows across each triangle along inside flap edge. Work 4 rows of Reverse Stockinette. BO all sts on next row.

With AA and starting at hem edge, PUK 1 st for every 2 rows and 1 st for every st along button flap edge, placing a double yo at each buttonhole point shown on diagram below. Row 1 (WS): Knit, going into double yo once and dropping second yo. Row 2 (RS): Purl, working into yo st and dropping st above. Row 3: Knit, working a double dec above 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th yo and placing an inc on both sides of 2nd, 4th, and 6th yo. Row 4: Purl. Loosely BO all sts on next row. Weave in remaining ends and block as necessary. Measure around waist and attach buttons to correspond to buttonholes. Attach hook and eye closure to inside flap and waistband.
