Introduce  The camping gear is ready. Gear is the equipment or clothing needed for a particular activity. Let’s say the word together: gear.

Introduce  This parka has fur around the hood. A parka is a warm, heavy jacket with a hood. Let’s say the word together: parka.

• Complete these sentence frames:

Action!

Introduce  A cheetah will twitch its tail. Twitch means “make small, jerky movements.” Let’s say the word together: twitch.

• Make your arm twitch. Then make your leg twitch. Remember that this is a small movement, not a big one.

Demonstrate  I saw the fish twitch in the water. My eyes will twitch when I’m tired. Sitting in the same spot too long made Clyde twitch.

• Sometimes before we sneeze, our noses start to twitch. Pretend you are about to sneeze. Make your nose twitch. Then pretend to sneeze.

Introduce  A large willow grows by the pond. A willow is a tree with narrow leaves and thin branches that bend easily. Let’s say the word together: willow.

• Draw a picture of a willow. Write a sentence that describes your drawing. Use the word willow in your sentence.

Demonstrate  The willow in our backyard is huge. The branches of the willow waved in the breeze. The squirrels built nests in the top of the willow. Apply  Would it be easy to climb on a willow branch? Why or why not? Display  Now I will write the word on the board. Let’s read the word together: willow.

• Make a list of as many different kinds of trees as you can. Be sure to include the willow on your list. Compare your list with other students’ lists. How many kinds did you name altogether? • Look at the photograph on the front of this card. Write the adjectives you can use to describe the willow or the scene.

Introduce  She yanked the sweater over her head. Yanked means “pulled with a sudden, sharp movement.” Let’s say the word together: yanked.

• Pretend to carefully pull a book off the shelf. How would this action be different if you yanked it instead?

Demonstrate  He yanked on the cord to close the curtains. I yanked on the doorknob and the door flew open. She yanked the book from my hands. Apply  What might happen if you yanked on something fragile?

• Yanking something from someone is not nice. Act out the polite way to get something from someone. Nicely ask a classmate to give you something. When he or she agrees, calmly take the item and then thank the person.
