2016 Senior Day GLORIA AGUILAR In just two years at Temple, Gloria has made her mark with the program. She is the sabre squad leader this season and recently finished with a winning record of 2-1 against #2 Notre Dame at the Duke Meet on February 7th. Gloria's two-year career record stands at 72-62, and she placed 10th at her first NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional last season. At the conclusion of her junior season, Gloria was named Most Valuable Player on the sabre squad. She is a psychology major from Madrid, Spain, and was named to the 2015 Athletic Director's Honor Roll for having a GPA of 3.0 or above. DEMI ANTIPAS The overall team captain this season as well as the foil squad leader, Demi has achieved much success in her four years with the program. Her overall career record stands at 135-102 heading into today's meet, and she placed seventh overall in foil at last year's NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. Earlier this season, Demi tied for sixth at the Temple Open before placing sixth yet again at the Penn State Open. Demi is a psychology major from Stony Brook, New York, and has been named to Temple's President's Honor Roll each year for having a GPA of 3.5 or above. Her high school coach was Jennie Salmon, a member of the 1992 Temple NCAA Foil Championship Team. JESSICA HALL Currently serving as the epee squad leader for a second year in a row, Jess has had a very strong final season for the Owls. Her record stands at 42-25 heading into today's meet, and she has a career mark of 166-102. At the Elite Invitational on November 21st, Jess went 9-2 against competition that included two top-10 teams. She finished 7-3 at the Penn State Invitational, going 2-1 in a team win against #8 Penn State. Jess is a speech, language and hearing science major from Parsippany, New Jersey, and has twice been named to Temple's Director's Honor Roll for having a GPA of 3.0 or above. PETRA KHAN After an injury kept her off the strip for much of last season, Petra has returned strong and is having an impressive senior year. Her season record stands at 35-20, and she has an overall career mark of 114-77. Petra placed sixth in sabre at the Temple Open to start the season, and was ninth at the Penn State Open. Her 13-8 overall mark at the Northwestern Duals included a 2-1 record against #2 Notre Dame and another 2-1 performance in a sabre squad win vs. #6 Ohio State. Petra is a public relations major from Beaverton, Oregon, and has been named to Temple's Director's Honor Roll for the past two years for having a GPA of at least 3.0. FATIMA LARGAESPADA Having earned a trip to the NCAA Championships in each of her three years so far at Temple, Fatima has made her mark for the Owls' foil squad. This season she has already amassed an impressive record of 38-21, and she stands at 174-101 for her career. Fatima started the season with Gold Medal at the Temple Open, and earned a medal yet again when she tied for third at the Penn State Open. She had the top record of 7-1 for the foil squad at Sacred Heart on December 6th, and her 10-2 mark on January 16th at the Penn State Invitational included a 3-0 record against #8 Penn State. Fatima is a public relations major from Puebla, Mexico, and has been named to both the Athletic Director's and President's Honor Rolls in her career at Temple. OLIVIA WYNN Despite switching weapons halfway through her collegiate career, Olivia has continued to find success. Now a member of the sabre squad, she has amassed a mark of 27-9 this season, and is 94-38 overall in her career including two years of foil. Olivia went a perfect 7-0 at the Elite Invitational in November and completed the Northwestern Duals in late January with an overall record of 12-2. In her first year fencing sabre last season, she was a finalist at the NIWFA Championships and placed eighth overall. Olivia is a therapeutic recreation major from Somerville, New Jersey, and has been named to both the President's and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls during her four years at Temple.

Fencing at a Glance Object of a Fencing Bout The object of a fencing match (called a bout in fencing) is to score 5 touches (in preliminary pool play) or 15 touches (in direct elimination play) before your opponent, or to have a higher score than your opponent when the time limit expires. Touches are received by hitting your opponent in the appropriate target area. Pool bouts consist of one 3-minute period, or 5 touches, whichever comes first. Direct elimination bouts consist of three 3-minute periods, or 15 touches, whichever comes first.
Following the Action The fencer being attacked defends himself by use of a “parry”, a motion used to deflect the opponent’s blade, after which the defender can make a “riposte”, and answering attack. Whenever a hit is made, the referee will stop the bout, describe the action, and decide whether to award a touch. Fencers seek to maintain a safe distance from each other – that is out of range of the opponent’s attack. Then, one will try to break this distance to gain the advantage for an attack. At times, a fencer will make a false attack to gauge the types of reactions of their opponent. When a fencer lands a hit, the referee stops the bout and – in foil and saber – determines who was the attacker, if the opponent successfully defended themselves, and which fencer should be awarded a touch, if any. Valid touches are indicated by a red or a green light on the scoring machine, each fencer has a different color light. In-valid touches are indicated by a white light on the scoring machine. Every time a light is shown on the scoring machine the referee will stop the action, even if there was no valid hit. In foil and saber, only one fencer may score a touch at a time, but in epee, both fencers may each score a touch at the same time if the both land a valid hit, and both lights come on the scoring machine. While it may be difficult to follow the referee’s calls, the referee always clearly raises their hand on the side of the fencer for whom they have awarded a point. Watching these hand signals can make it easier for newcomers to follow the action.
The Scoring Machine The scoring machine will light up on the side of the fencer who hits their opponent. A red or green light (depends on which side the fencer is one) indicates a hit in valid target area, and white light indicates a hit on in-valid target area. The scoring machine also keeps score of the total overall points each fencer has accumulated, and in most cases, it also keeps time. The times counts down from 3 minutes, stopping each time the action stops.
The Temple Invitational
The Weapons Foil The foil is a descendant of the light court sword formally used by nobility to train for duels. The foil has a flexible rectangular blade, approximately 35 inches in length and weighs less than one pound. Points are scored with the tip of the blade and must land within the torso of the body. The valid target area in foil (i.e. the only places that you can hit to score a touch) is the torso from the shoulders to the groin in the front and to the waist in the back (indicated in orange in the figure above). It does not include the arms, neck, head, and legs. This concept of on-target and off-target evolved from the theory of 18th century fencing masters who instructed their students to only attack the vital areas of the body (i.e. the torso). Of course, the head is also a vital area of the body, but attacks to the face were considered unsporting and therefore discouraged. Off-target hits are indicated by a white light on the scoring machine, while on-target hits are indicated by the red or green light. The foil fencer’s uniform includes a metallic vest (called a lamé in fencing) which covers the valid target area so that a valid touch will register on the scoring machine. This metallic material also covers the bottom of the bib of the mask, which is also valid target area. The flexible nature of the foil blade permits the modern elite foil fencer to attack and opponent from seemingly impossible angles.
Epee The epee (pronounced “epp-pay”, meaning sword in French), is the descendant of the dueling sword, and is similar in length to the foil, but heavier, weighing approximately 27 ounces, with a larger guard (to protect the hand from a valid touch), and a much stiffer blade. Touches are scored only with the point of the blade, and the entire body, head-to-toe, is the valid target area, imitating an actual duel (indicated in orange in the figure above). A full-body target naturally makes epee a competition of careful strategy and patience. Therefore, rather than attacking outright, epeeists often spend time probing their opponents defenses and maneuvering for distance before risking an attack. Others choose to stay on the defensive throughout the entire bout.
Sabre The sabre is the modern version of the slashing cavalry sword, is similar in length and weight to th foil. The major difference is the use of the blade. The sabre is a cutting weapon as well as a thrusting weapon; therefore, sabreists can score with the edge of their blade as well as the point. The target area is from the bend of the hips (both front and back), to the top of the head (indicated in orange in the figure above). This simulates the cavalry rider on a horse. The sabre fencer’s uniform includes a metallic jacket (lamé), which fully covers the target area to register a valid touch on the scoring machine. Because the head is also valid target, the fencer’s mask is also electrically wired. In sabre, the rules strongly favor the fencer who attacks first, and a mere graze by the blade against the lamé registers a touch. These circumstances naturally make saber a fast, aggressive game, with fencers rushing their opponent from the moment the referees gives the instruction to fence.
