English Paper Piecing Basics using the glue-basting method Copyright 2016 Katja Marek

English Paper Piecing is a handwork technique where fabric is wrapped around paper shapes, placed right sides facing, and whip-stitched together along adjoining edges to create precise results.

Cut out your design discarding the excess paper. To help you put the block back together properly draw parallel lines across the back before cutting it into its units. Cut apart into the individual pieces laying it out, as it will be pieced back together.

In order for the finished block to flow in the same direction as the sample the printed/numbered side of your block must face the wrong side of the fabric. Glue-baste every piece by placing glue near the edge of the paper template (but not on the cut edge or you will be sewing through glue).

Start sewing by hiding a knot under the seam allowance and stitch about 12 stitches per inch grabbing just 1-2 threads of fabric along the edge of your pieces. Fold the paper templates as necessary to line up any ‘Y’ seams. Stitch all seams for a completed block. Press and take out papers as directed in your pattern.
