Photo Gallery: Equinox Festival Celebrates Mexico’s Culture, Art

“The Feathered Serpent” by Encuentro Latino Art Gallery was the highlight of the 2012 Equinox Ceremony inside Plaza Mexico. By Juana Esquivel June 10, 2012 Thousands of people gathered inside Plaza Mexico Saturday to witness the first and only performance of “The Feathered Serpent” by Encuentro Latino Art Gallery. The gallery is a non-profit group dedicated to fostering the love of art in Los Angeles youths. The performance was part of the 2012 Equinox Festival, sponsored by Plaza Mexico, with the participation of the Xocoyote dance group (Grupo de Danza Xocoyote) and the Seeds of the People School (Escuela Semillas del Pueblo). “The Equinox is the ceremony that takes place in March to begin the planting season and the start of spring,” said Marcela Abascal, marketing coordinator for Plaza Mexico. “It is a ceremony which takes place in Mexico, in all the places where there are pyramids and they (Encuento Latino Art Gallery) wanted to reproduce it here in Plaza Mexico because it is an event ... that should not just be done during the Equinox date. "It is a date so nice, so rich, so important that we considered (it) convenient to do it again.” Booths featuring jewelry, art and traditional Mexican treats were also part of the festival. One booth served as an art workshop for children and adults; participants were taught how to paint. The ceremony consisted of Aztec dances, rituals, offerings, and prayers. All of this was done in front of a model of the sun pyramid from Teotihuacán. “The city of Lynwood has this symbol which is Plaza Mexico," Abascal said. The plaza, said Abascal, "has the perfect stage with all the architecture which reminds people of many places in Mexico. "This is the traditional meeting center when it comes to promoting the culture, to do shows that bring a little bit of Mexico to California,” Abascal said. The Equinox festival is set to continue Sunday with more performances and booths.
