ESGOBAETH LLANELWY: DIOCESE OF ST ASAPH JOB DESCRIPTION ARCHDEACON OF ST ASAPH Job Purpose To support the Bishop in all aspects of his ministry as a critical friend, developing the common vision for the Diocese and complementing the Bishop’s gifts on pastoral, ministerial, financial and property issues. Implementing the 2020 Vision strategy in the diocese as part of the Bishop’s staff team.  Sharing the diocesan vision with the archdeaconry, deaneries and parishes and developing the collaborative witness of the church through Mission Areas.  Training and resourcing of the Church for the future  Conducting the Bishop’s Review for clergy To play a key role in Bishop’s Staff meetings, alongside the Bishop, the Dean, the Archdeacons, the Bishop’s Chaplain and the Diocesan Secretary To contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Diocesan policies and procedures e.g. Welsh language policy, Safeguarding policy etc. To contribute to the financial and organisational management of the diocese through involvement with the Diocesan Boards. This will include portfolio management of a nominated Diocesan Steering Group, helping to set priorities and inspire and communicate visionary thinking To represent the Bishop and Diocese at provincial-led meetings and events as requested To participate in the Diocesan appointment process as required; to cooperate with the Bishop in the discernment of and liaison with candidates

Archdeaconry 1. To organise regular meetings of the Mission Area Leaders 2. To support the Mission Area Leaders in developing and exploring new ideas and good practice, encouraging imaginative ideas for growth at all levels 3. To ensure the Mission Area Leaders are aware of new developments within the Diocese and Archdeaconry and to support them in implementation 4. To work closely with the Mission Area Leaders in training, supporting and maintaining pastoral care of clergy 5. To assist the Bishop in the appointment of Mission Area Leaders 6. To meet with newly appointed clergy after completion of six months in post

Parishes 1. To ensure that parishes comply with the law governing the administration of the electoral roll 2. To act as President of the Archdeacon’s Court in deciding disputes concerning the electoral roll Job Description – Archdeacon of St Asaph

3. To undertake the functions and administration associated with visitations:  Admitting churchwardens  Ensuring maintenance of inventory and parsonages 4. To chair parish vestry meetings as necessary when the office of Area Dean is vacant 5. To advise clergy, PCCs and laity on matters concerning the maintenance of the church, churchyard and church hall 6. To facilitate pastoral reorganisation, consulting with deaneries, parishes and clergy as appropriate 7. To support and guide parishes during vacancies and during periods of clergy incapacity 8. To ensure clergy are aware of terms of office and ensure compliance with the prescribed procedures, including clergy discipline 9. To encourage and support clergy in ongoing ministerial development through training and mentoring 10. To support Area Deans and parishes in developing an accurate and insightful parish profile

Ministry 1. To participate in parish ministry as a leader in good practice and to maintain credibility and integrity in collaborative ministry 2. To be an active and committed member of the Cathedral Chapter

Terms of Service This post will be subject to the Clergy Terms and Conditions of Service as defined in the 2010 Clergy Service Terms Canon of the Constitution of the Church in Wales. Archdeacons receive a stipend set by the Representative Body of the Church in Wales at 153% of an incumbent’s stipend (Archdeacon’s Stipend - £34,362 in 2014), and pension entitlements based on a non-contributory final salary scheme. Fees for occasional offices are assigned to the parish. The Archdeacon of St Asaph will also serve as Rector of Caerwys and Bodfari with accommodation provided at 14, Lon yr Ysgol, Caerwys, Holywell, Flintshire, CH7 5PZ.
