ESL SUMMER CAMP Summer 2017 HISTORY, TRADITION, ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

This program is designed for students aged 9-16 who are beginning to intermediate level English speakers. This programme will help students with their writing, reading, comprehension and speaking skills in fun, engaging ways, both in the classroom and out and around the community. Students will be engrossed in the English language in the classroom, gym, arena, swimming pool and out in the Niagara community.

Ridley College is a beautiful setting for you to start your English language journey. Our ninety acre campus, with its excellent facilities, is perfectly situated in the heart of the historic and picturesque Niagara Peninsula. The neighbouring communities are a unique blend of rural and urban areas, which promotes our students and staff with the advantages of living in a city and the traditions of “small town” Canada

Programme Overview The Ridley College ESL Summer Camp is a programme designed for students ranging in age from 9-16 with a beginner or intermediate level of English proficiency. Students will learn writing, reading, comprehension and speaking skills in the classroom and by participating in fun sports and activities around the campus. Residential and Weekend Programming • 24-hour dorm supervision will be provided by qualified Ridley College staff. • Comfortable, shared accommodation in modern twin-bed rooms provided.

• Three meals per day and daytime snacks included.

• Health insurance is included in the programme fee, while staying at Ridley College.

• Daily co-curricular activities run after school from 4:00-5:30pm including sports, swimming, skating, use of the strength centre, arts and crafts and much more! • Scheduled evening study periods three nights per week.

• Evening and weekend excursions such as: Niagara Falls, shopping at the local outlet mall, visits to Port Dalhousie and Crystal Beach, walking tour of downtown St. Catharines, movie nights, Canada’s Wonderland, CN Tower, shopping in Toronto and much more!

2017 Fees & Start Dates

Session 1: July 2 to July 22, 2017 Session 2: August 6 to August 26, 2017 $4,999 (CDN)

Session 1 Ridley College expects that all session one ESL students to arrive on campus on Sunday, July 2, 2017. Students will receive their house location, room assignments and have the day to relax, while also preparing for camp at 8:30am Monday, July 3, 2017.

Students should NOT expect to arrive at Ridley College prior to July 2, 2017. NO exceptions will be made. All Session 1 students will leave the Ridley College campus on Saturday, July 22, 2017.

Session 2 Ridley College expects that all session two ESL students to arrive on campus on Sunday, August 6, 2017. Students will receive their house location, room assignments and have the day to relax, while also preparing for camp at 8:30am Monday, August 7, 2017.

Students should NOT expect to arrive at Ridley College prior to August 6, 2017. NO exceptions will be made. All Session 2 students will leave the Ridley College campus on Saturday, August 26, 2017.

NOTE - If a student requires accommodation after the session is completed, the Agent/Guardian is responsible for finding alternative accommodation for the student. Additional Fees/Costs: Airplane ticket • Personal spending money • Unaccompanied minor If a student is found to have conducted unlawful or malicious damage to Ridley College property, the student will be charged by Ridley College for the required repair(s).

RESIDENTIAL LIFE AND EXPECTATIONS Rooms We have single and double occupancy guest rooms available, depending upon the boarding house. Rooms are equipped with single beds, desks, shelves, chairs, lockable wardrobes and bed linen.

Roommates Students share their rooms with at least one other student. One of the benefits of the boarding experience is learning to live with others. It is important for students and roommates to respect the communal nature of space within their rooms. All boarders must be able to study within the room, sleep undisturbed at night and to securely leave belongings. Students are not to leave the residence after curfew and may not, under any circumstances, invite members of the opposite sex into their residence or room.

Expectations Rooms must be kept tidy; garbage thrown out, and noise kept to a level that does not disturb others. It is important to remember that visitors, such as Summer Programme staff and members of the Physical Plant staff, may stop by a student’s room at any time for a variety of reasons; it must, therefore, always be presentable.

Students are expected to respect school facilities. If something is broken or damaged, students must report this immediately to the Summer Programme staff.

Rooms and furnishings should be left clean and in as good condition as they were when students arrived. An inspection for damages is done at the beginning of the summer camp and again at the end of each camp. Each student is responsible for personal damage within his or her room. Charges will be assessed for damage to school property or for any extra cleaning required at the end of the summer session. Pets are not allowed.

Bathroom Facilities Each residence has modern shared washroom facilities on each floor. Bath linen is not provided. Asian and European electrical appliances are of a different voltage to Canada. Canada’s electrical current is 110 volts AC at 15 amperes and you will need to bring an adapter if you intend to use any any type of personal electrical appliance. Students MUST remain on campus under staff supervision. Excursions off campus will be chaperoned by staff. Other Services and Amenities Full time nursing staff is on campus.

Washers and dryers are provided in each residence. Cleaning of your clothes is each student’s personal responsibility. Daily cleaning and housekeeping services are provided. Laundry soap and dryer sheets provided.

Each boarding house is equipped with a television lounge for your enjoyment. The facilities (gyms, fields, etc.) are available for student use during free time. Telephone - Pay telephones are in each residence.

Internet - Time will be allotted for students to use the Internet. All students are required to sign Ridley College’s Internet “Acceptable Use Policy”. Meals Most meals are eaten in the Great Hall (Upper School). The menu is varied and nutritious, and almost all students with special dietary needs can be served from the daily menu. Vegetarian entrees are offered at lunch and supper. Please indicate on the medical form if you have any food allergies or dietary needs/concerns. Good manners are expected in the dining room at all meals. Students must take trays

Ridley College endeavours, at all times, to provide a learning and working community that supports the fair treatment of all students, faculty, and staff. The basis for interaction is mutual respect, cooperation, and understanding.

with their meals and clean up after themselves. Campus Safety All exterior doors are monitored by security cameras and are automatically locked. Security cameras can be found in the high traffic areas of the school. These high-resolution cameras are in place to further increase and protect the security of our students and the campus itself.

Students should never approach anyone acting suspiciously on campus. Such events should be reported immediately to someone of authority. Students should enter the Campus Security contact number into their cell phone directory lists (1-888-386-7425). This is not to replace 911, where an immediate response of the Police, Fire or Ambulance is necessary. Students are not to wander around after dark by themselves; they should be in pairs when traversing the campus after dark. Security personnel patrol the Ridley College campus on a regular basis.

Fire Drills All students are instructed on the proper exit procedures from both residence and classroom areas. In order to prevent fires, electrical appliances are prohibited in student rooms.

Protection of Valuables Students should NOT keep large amounts of money, passports, VISAS, airplane tickets, valuables, etc. in their possession. These valuable items are to be handed over to the Summer Programme staff for safekeeping immediately upon arrival at the College. Despite our best efforts and the awareness that theft of money or property is a dismissible offence, theft does occasionally occur. We urge students to be careful with their belongings. Each student should bring a combination lock for his or her wardrobe. Students also are encouraged to clearly label all their belongings so that misplaced items may be returned to their owners.

Contacting Students at the School Parents are encouraged to contact students outside of class and evening study times.

Parents may contact their children via the Internet (e-mail, messaging, etc.), cell phone, and through the common room phones in each of the residences (phone numbers will be given to students to pass along to parents and/or guardians). Students are expected to refrain from using cell phones during the academic day or during evening study. In an event of an emergency, parents will be able to leave a message in English with the Summer Programmes office. This number will be provided upon student arrival at Ridley College.

Major Rules of the School 1. No smoking anywhere at anytime; 2 No consumption or possession of alcohol anywhere at anytime; 3. No presence of the opposite sex in residences; 4. No unauthorized use of a motor vehicle; 5. No unauthorized absence from campus; absence from the house after curfew; 6. No sexual intimacy; 7. No possession or use of firearms, explosives, or other dangerous weapons or substances; 8. No use of unauthorized electrical appliances, nor the lighting of an open flame in a school building (no candles or matches); 9. No stealing, academic dishonesty, vandalism, bullying or inflicting serious harm on others; 10. No possession, use or distribution of drugs or drug paraphernalia; 11. No offensive language or ads on clothing; 12. No hats in the Great Hall; 13. No food fights anywhere on campus.

Any infringement upon the above rules may result in serious on-campus discipline and/or dismissal.

VISA INFORMATION

Students do not require a study permit to study in a short-term course or programme. Permits are not required if students plan to take a course and or programme in Canada that lasts six months or less. Students are required to complete the course and or programme within the time period authorized for your stay in Canada. Whether or not students need a visitor’s VISA will depend on your country of origin. We advise that families check the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website at: www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.html for further information about the type of documentation required. You will also find a list of countries that require a visa in order to enter Canada. Please check with The Canadian Immigration Centre (CIC) in your area as to how long it takes to obtain a tourist VISA as times do vary greatly by country.
