HOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF MODESTY FROM THESE SOURCES? IS THIS A TRAIT THAT YOU IDENTIFY WITH?
DON’T SAY A WORD Talmud Bavli: Megillah 13b In the merit of the modesty that Rachel had she merited having Shaul, and in the merit of the modesty of Shaul he merited having Esther. What modesty did Rachel have? Rachel gave Leah the signs so that she would not be embarrassed at her wedding. As it says: “And in the morning and behold it was Leah” and was it not Leah before? What it means is that Rachel told Leah the signs and he (Yaakov) didn’t know it was Leah until then. Therefore she (Rachel) merited in having Shaul in her descendants. Midrash Rabba: Esther 6 You see that she committed to being silent like Rachel. Rachel stayed silent in the face of her sister receiving wedding gifts, Binyamin remained silent in the face of Mechiras Yosef happening, and Esther didn’t say anything about herself.

COUNTERING HIDDENNESS WITH MODESTY Maharal Ohr Chadash Introduction The first hiddenness (of Hashem) was under the reign of Achashverosh under which they were enslaved, and more than this under Haman, therefore after it says “And I will hide My face from them” it goes on to say that there will be multiple hidings. And since in the times of Haman it was being hidden within being hidden. Therefore Esther was the only one fit to be the redeemer, for Hashem demonstrated about her great modesty, for modesty is something which is not revealed, therefore her prayer reached the hidden parts of Hashem, and it undid the power of Haman.

The debates of Tanaim and Amoraim and Geonim in fact represent the truth of the living God. All of their views have merit from a halakhic perspective. In fact, this diversity and range constitute the beauty and splendor of our holy Torah. The entire Torah is called a song whose beauty derives from the interactive diversity of its voices and instruments. One who immerses himself in the sea of Talmud will experience the joy that results from such rich variety. The Aruch Hashulchan explains that Torah and particularly Oral Torah is like a song. Oral Torah is understood despite the hiddenness of Hashem. Holding back, modesty, hiddenness often allows for creativity and deeper understanding. This is the message of the story of Esther. She led the geula through holding back and modesty in a time of Hashem’s deep hiddenness. The Torah teaches us that this hiddenness of Hashem need not be negative; it can be a time of salvation and an opportunity for creativity in the song of Torah. A Woman’s Power

MODESTY AT THE WRONG TIME Mordechai reaches out to Esther to tell her of the King’s decree. Her response is reluctance to approach the king and speak up. Esther Perek 4 10) Then Esther spoke unto Hathach, and gave him a message unto Mordecai: 11) 'All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden scepter, that he may live; but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.' 12 And they told to Mordecai Esther's words. 13 Then Mordecai bade them to return answer unto Esther: “do not think only of yourself that you will escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews. 14 For if you are silent at this time then will relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish; and who knows whether or not you came to royal estate for such a time as this?'

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS Modesty is about knowing when to speak and when not to speak, when to be seen and when not to be seen. Esther was the perfect person to save klal yisrael from destruction at a time of God hiding Himself because she knew how to be hidden. Esther teaches us that hiddenness can offer opportunity, the hiddenness that we need to reveal of Oral Torah gives us opportunity to create our own Torah Songs.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS Modesty is about knowing when to speak and when not to speak, when to be seen and when not to be seen. Esther was the perfect person to save klal yisrael from destruction at a time of God hiding Himself because she knew how to be hidden. Esther teaches us that hiddenness can offer opportunity, the hiddenness that we need to reveal of Oral Torah gives us opportunity to create our own Torah Songs.
