GAME 27 THE TEAMS

LEADING OFF ... The Purple Aces visit Western Kentucky on Tuesday hoping to take their four-game winning streak into road action.

15-11

16-11

PROBABLE STARTERS RHP Austin Allinger Fr. • 5-10 • 200 Season Statistics 3-1, 5.52 ERA, 29.1 IP, 20 K

Last week, UE started with a 13-2 victory over SIUE before picking up a three-game sweep over visiting Florida Gulf Coast over the weekend. The winning streak would likely be five straight games if not for weather last Wednesday, when the Aces saw their 15-0 lead at Indiana get washed out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Connor Strain, who started Friday’s contest against FGCU, has thrown 23.2 consecutive scoreless innings. The Aces have hit 26 home runs this season, which stands as the best single-season total since UE registered 26 in 2011. It is already two better than last season’s mark.

Jonathan Ramon has homered six times this season, which is already the highest single-season total for an individual since Kevin Kaczmarski left the park six times in 2013. UE has already scored 10 or more runs on eight occasions this season. Last year, the Aces ended the year with 12 double-digit scoring contests. UE boasts of one preseason All-MVC honoree, Josh Jyawook, who has 23 scores and 20 RBI on the year so far.

PURPLE ACES BASEBALL Strain’s Streak • Connor Strain is currently riding a 23.2 inning scoreless streak, which includes 21.1 consecutive frames since returning from a forearm injury earlier this month. • Opponents have scored in just one of Strain’s 26 full innings this season. In the season-opener at South Alabama, the Jaguars pushed across five runs (two earned) in the third inning. • Overall, Strain has allowed just one extra-base hit, and he struck out a careerbest eight in the Eastern Kentucky win last Friday. Not So Perfect 10 • Prior to March 16’s loss at SIUE, the Aces had won 55 consecutive games when they scored 10 or more runs in a game. • Under the direction of head coach Wes Carroll, the Aces are 66-4 in games where they touch home at least 10 times. • The SIUE loss marked the first time the Aces lost a game where they scored double-digit runs since an 11-10 decision at Mercer on Feb. 26, 2010. Power Surge • Eleven different Aces have homered this season as UE left the park 26 times over the first 26 games. • UE has already logged more homers this season than in any year since 2011, when the Aces left the park 26 times. • On March 16, UE tied a school record with six homers at SIUE. The homers were recorded by Eric McKibban, Hair, Synek, Ramon and Josh Jyawook, who left the park twice. Previously, UE homered six times at Ball State on May 9, 2001. • Eleven different Aces have homered this season. That number represents the most since 13 players collected at least one four-bagger in 2001. Historic Pace • Dating back to 2005, no Aces team has reached 20 home runs on the season quicker than this year. • The 2010 squad, the last to use the old standard for bats, also hit 20 homers over the first 17 contests of the year. UE would go on to log 53 homers that season, by far the largest number from a Wes Carrollcoached team.

• Last season, UE finished with 21 homers, and it took 40 games to get to 20. The 2014 Aces, who went on to lift the Missouri Valley regular season title, left the park just 17 times.

Go Home, Ramon • Jonathan Ramon has already slugged a team-best six home runs on the season. He is the first UE player to register six fourbaggers in a season since former Aces star Kevin Kaczmarski hit six during the 2013 campaign. Once, Twice, Three Times a Homer • The Aces have hit three-or-more home runs in three different games this season. • This is the first season where that’s occurred since UE logged three three-plus homer games in 2014. • UE had four such contests in 2010, which was the last season with the old bat standards. B-Town Beatdown • The scoreboard last Wednesday night at Indiana may have read 15-0, but unfortunately for the Aces, the game did not count as UE’s contest with the Hoosiers was halted due to inclement weather. • The game was just three outs away from being an official contest before storms halted the game. • Trey Hair homered in the game, and Eric McKibban was 3-for-3 with a trio of runs, but none of the that will count for their overall season statistics. Early Season Streak • After picking up a win over Monmouth last month, UE started up the month of March on fire, running off seven straight victories before the weekend. • Over the course of the seven-game winning streak, the Aces boasted of a .356 batting average with a .467 on-base mark, averaging 12.3 runs per game. • The winning streak was the longest since a seven-game stretch from March 13-23, 2010.

Baseball-ma Mater The Evansville baseball coaching staff holds a unique distinction. With 2001 graduate Wes Carroll as head coach as well as 2011 and 2014 alumni in assistants Cody Fick and Jake Mahon, UE is one of just seven schools out of nearly 300 that boast of both a head coach and both assistants as alumni of the programs they coach. Overall, Carroll is one of 51 head coaches that helm their alma mater’s team.

Grand Openings • In the win over Northern Illinois earlier this month, Stewart Nelson collected his first hit of the 2016 season and first career home run with a grand slam to put the Aces ahead. • The homer was the first grand slam by a UE player since Josh Jyawook left the park against UALR on Feb. 14, 2015. • Billy Lipari would repeat the feat just two days later at UT Martin, as he capped the record scoring output for the Aces with a four-run blast. It was his second career home run. Heavensville • After kicking off the season with a seven-game road swing, the University of Evansville baseball team began its 2016 home slate with a sweep of Northern Illinois. • The Aces went 13-7 at Charles H. Braun Stadium last season, and under the direction of head coach Wes Carroll, UE owns a 120-68 record in Evansville. • UE is 8-1 at home this season. Aces vs. Western Kentucky • Tuesday marks the 44th meeting between WKU and UE, and the first in Bowling Green since a 8-5 loss on March 27, 2013. • Since 1978, which marked the first season in school history, UE is 20-22-1 versus WKU and 112-85-2 against schools that hail from the state of Kentucky. • Last season, the Aces took two out of three from the Hilltoppers in Emerson, Ga. • This season marks the fourth time in five seasons that the two teams have played each other. • The UE/WKU series began in 1970 as each team picked up a win in an earlyseason two-game set.

PURPLE ACES BASEBALL

wes

CARROLL

Head Coach Eighth Season Evansville ‘01 Wes has quickly changed the culture and restored the pride in Aces baseball. Inheriting a team that won only 14 games in 2008, Carroll posted the second-highest victory total by a first-year baseball coach at Evansville with 25 wins in 2009 and increased UE’s victory total by at least seven wins in each of his first two seasons. He has led Evansville to winning seasons in each of the last three years. In 2015, Carroll led UE to another winning season. He also coached outfielder Kevin Kaczmarski to the nation’s highest batting average at .465, the first player in school history to be named MVC Joe Carter Player of the Year and an AllAmerican by seven different outlets. The 2014 season was a banner year for Carroll and the Purple Aces, as Evansville claimed the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title, placed a record number of players on the All-MVC First Team and saw three players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. UE finished the season 34-21 overall and finished 15-6 in Valley play to claim their first MVC crown since 2006 and only its second in program history, as Carroll was named the MVC’s Dan Callahan Coach of the Year, become just the third Evansville coach to earn the honor. Under Carroll’s direction, a total of seven Aces were named to All-MVC squads, including four first team selections and MVC Pitcher of the Year Kyle Freeland, who finished the season 10-2 with a 1.90 ERA, 128 strikeouts and only 13 walks. Freeland earned a trio of All-America honors (Baseball America [first team], Collegiate Baseball [third team], NCBWA [third team]), becoming the first UE player to be recognized as an All-American by three publications since Andy Benes in 1988. In addition, Freeland was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the eighth overall pick in the MLB Draft, becoming the second-highest draftee in program history, behind only Benes, who was taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1988 draft. Kyle Pollock and Sam Johns joined Freeland as draftees, as Pollock was picked in the 20th round by the Kansas City Royals and Johns was taken in the 31st round by the Washington Nationals. Statistically, the Aces led the Valley in batting average (.283) and on-base percentage (.380) and finished second in the league in runs scored (330), runs batted in (297) and doubles (103). In conference play, UE hit a remarkable .291 as a team to lead the conference by 12 points and struck out just 105 times, 24 times less than any other MVC squad. In his first year as head coach, Carroll quickly pointed the program in the right direction, helping the Purple Aces to 11 more victories than a season prior as UE went 25-30 in 2009 with four players garnering all-MVC awards. As a coach, Carroll has led his team with the same enthusiasm and hard-nosed approach which made him one of the top players to wear a Purple Aces’ uniform and play in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Carroll learned the game “the Purple Aces’ way” growing up just minutes from the UE campus in nearby Newburgh, Indiana. He watched his older brother and current Major League infielder, Jamey Carroll, excel at shortstop for UE, and later got to experience the success the program is capable of first-hand as a four-year starter for the Purple Aces and a member of UE’s 2000 NCAA Tournament team. Wes Carroll became UE’s first Freshman All-America selection in 1998, thanks to a rookie campaign in which he hit .355 with 18 doubles, two home runs, and 39 runs batted in. Carroll went on to hit .299 or better in each of his four years at UE, and finished his career by setting the school’s all-time career record for doubles (74), while also ranking in the school’s career top 10 in six different categories. He still holds the record for career doubles, has the second-most base hits in school history with 308, and ranks 10th all-time in UE history with a .339 career batting average. Carroll earned all-conference and all-region honors on the UE infield during his four-year career, before being named to the Missouri Valley Conference’s All-Centennial Team in 2007 as one of the top players in league history. Following his college career at Evansville, Carroll was drafted in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Carroll spent the next five years playing Minor League Baseball for the Phillies, and later, for the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals organization. As a part of the now-Nationals organization, Carroll played parts of two seasons at the AAA level. He retired from the professional ranks in the spring of 2006, but not before he was able to play alongside his older brother, Jamey, in two spring training games for the Washington Nationals. Carroll then returned to his alma mater in the summer of 2006 as an assistant coach with the Purple Aces’ program. Carroll’s main responsibilities as an assistant coach included serving as the team’s hitting coach and infield coach. Carroll helped the 2007 Purple Aces attain their third-highest team batting average (.292) since the NCAA implemented reforms on bats in 2000. Carroll graduated from UE in 2001 with a degree in Human Kinetics and Sport Studies. Wes and his wife, Ashley, a former soccer standout for the Purple Aces, reside in Evansville and have one son and one daughter.
