EVENTS PROGRAM - FALL 2016 GIP global travel programs: Reflections and takeaways Monday, Sept. 12, 6:30 p.m., Garland Theatre

Upper School students, who participated on last year’s GIP travel programs (Cuba, Nicaragua, Cambodia-Vietnam, and Baja), will share their experiences, reflections and thoughts from their respective trips. Through a variety of media (video, slideshows, poems, essays, and activities), students will take us to the distant getaway destinations, explain their experiences, and provide insights regarding their travels. This first annual Poly’s 2016 Global Travel Program — Reflections and Takeaways also promises to provide an ideal platform for those interested in learning more about the totality of Poly’s travel programs as well as the grand opportunities afforded to our students.

Stephen McAndrew has worked for more than 17 years in international operations for the Red Cross. During this time, he has been on the frontlines of some of the biggest disasters in recent history: addressing the Syrian refugee crisis (2013), leading the IFRC’s response to Ebola (he was awarded a medal by Queen Elizabeth II for his work on this emergency crisis), providing aid to Nepal after the earthquake (2015), giving support during the migrant crisis in Greece (2015), and last month, he led the IFRC’s aid to Haiti after the devastating impact of Hurricane Matthew. Discussions will reflect on Stephen’s experiences and how assistance to large-scale disasters, such as the Syrian migrant crisis, are implemented by frontline agencies like the Red Cross.

Catherine Masud: A journey of filmmaking in Bangladesh Thursday, Dec. 8, 6:30 p.m., Upper School Library

Catherine Masud took the road less traveled in life. Shortly after graduating from Brown, she went to Bangladesh as a self-styled development volunteer, then got swept up in the independent film movement. She spent the next 25 years of her life in Bangladesh making films with her late husband, Tareque Masud, on themes ranging from gender politics to child labor to religious identity. Their films were often banned but also won awards, including a prestigious International Critics award at the Cannes Film Festival. She will talk about her journey, share scenes from her powerful films, and discuss the importance of following your dreams, wherever they may take you.
