Ever Wondered Why Is Throwing Rice On A Newly Married Couple A Tradition? Lifestyle I was curious about this custom, too. When I was 7, I noticeably observed and watched all grownups showering the bride and groom with heaps of uncooked rice. I found it quite peculiar. I asked my parents what was it all about. They said, it's a tradition to be followed in every wedding, and it symbolizes warm wishes to the newly married couple. Read on to know how this tradition is followed in different countries.
Now, it's my best friend's wedding. And I did some research.

What do other countries follow?
In Indian weddings, as the bride steps out of the house,
....she throws back five handfuls of rice over her head, in a way that it falls on the person standing behind her, as a symbol of prosperity and wealth.
In Morocco, the wedding guests gather round to toss raisins and figs at the couple to ensure a fruitful union.
In France, the wedding guests pelt wheat at the couple.
In Italy, they pelt sweetened nuts and candies, and in some other European countries, they even throw eggs at the newlyweds.
But, now the times, they are a changin'.
Modern wedding preferences are now throwing bird seeds at the couple or are blowing bubbles. The message is still the same. The earliest rituals had its own cons. The showering of seeds on the couple actually hurt them on the head, and at the same time, it gets stuck in the dresses, too.
