‘People still think we drink cosmos every day!’ Bella gets all the old Sex And T he City secrets relationship is great – it’s kind of tension and drama-free.

What’s she like to work with? Sarah puts so much of her own persona into Carrie – she’s a very positive person. She’s always honest and real. We just had so much fun working together on the show.

Do you have a favourite photograph of the pair of you?

e can’t quite believe it’s been 18 years since Carrie Bradshaw first graced the sidewalks of Manhattan (and our TV screens) in her Manolo Blahniks. Sex And The City followed the lives of cosmopolitan-sipping girlfriends Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristen Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) in New York – and it was one of the most iconic shows of its era. Keen to reminisce, Bella chats to Willie Garson, 52, who played Carrie’s confidante and gay best friend Stanford Blatch, to get all the goss from behind the scenes…

Hi Willie! What’s your favourite memory of the show? My favourite memories of Sex And The City always centre around the quiet scenes with Sarah and me, just talking. I remember all of it. It was crazy. My whole goal was

There’s a great picture from the first film. We were just laughing like we did all the time. And I’m wearing a terrific suit!

just to make Sarah laugh. We made the pilot in 1996, which is amazing. It’s great the series is being shown again on Now TV.

Are you and Sarah pals off screen? She’s a very dear friend. We met at a dinner party and we’ve been friends for almost 30 years, which is so scary. We didn’t know we’d both auditioned for a part in SATC and when I found out she had, I called her and she said: ‘It’s television, I don’t know if I should do it, they just hate you on television and they write awful things about you and criticise you all day. I don’t know if I want to do it again, but the script is really good.’ Our relationship isn’t like Carrie and Stanford – we have a more normal male/female relationship. On screen the

Are you as flamboyant as Stanford? No, I’m not homosexual for a start, so it would be weird if I walked around dressed like Stanford all day! So no, Sarah doesn’t give me fashion tips. I have a good sense for fashion, which was certainly heightened during the show. Sarah’s very simple fashionwise in life, she doesn’t dress like Carrie every day.

‘We just had so much fun’

Does SJP have similar mannerisms to Carrie in real life? She does – we’d bring stuff from our lives into the scenes and Sarah would often reach over and pat my bald head. She’d do that in real life too.

Would you be up for a new series? I couldn’t see a remake of the show happening, [but] there are

always hints about another movie. The prequel, The Carrie Diaries, was a good idea, but it didn’t get a lot of traction. It’s six years since the last movie – it all comes down to storylines, scripts and finance. So many things have to fall into place for it to happen. No one ever ruled it out. I’d be up for it and imagine everyone else would be.

Is Kim [Cattrall] anywhere near as outrageous as Samantha? No, she’s lovely and fun. Certainly not like the character – she wouldn’t get on a table naked!

Are you and the girls still close in real life? Do you have a WhatsApp group? What’s WhatsApp? [Bella explains it’s a group-messaging app.] No! That would be ridiculous. So we’d all go online at 9pm on a Tuesday? No, but of course we stay in touch. I spoke to Sarah on Sunday, I spoke to Kim on Monday, I spoke to Kristen on Friday. It was a huge part of our lives. With the movies, it was almost 15 years of working together.

Did you enjoy any cast nights out? They just happened organically because of premieres and wrap parties. I remember a really lovely night after the premiere of the first movie [in New York], which was the most bananas thing I’ve seen in my life. Thousands of people, a three-hour press line, it was crazy. After the premiere just the cast and their partners went to Bemelmans Bar in the Carlyle Hotel and it was really nice after

all those years just to be together after the storm.

Who was the biggest diva on set? It has to be Mario Cantone, who played Anthony of course. I was the longest in make-up with all the nipping and tucking they had to do.

Did appearing in the show teach you a lot about women? It taught the world a lot about women. It taught us that women actually talk about the same things men talk about. It was something we hadn’t seen on television before.

Did you get sick of drinking cosmopolitan cocktails? We drank a lot on set and now when we’re sitting in a restaurant people will send them over as if we’re raging alcoholics and all we do all day is drink cosmos. Watch Sex And The City season 1-6 from 5 May with the Now TV Entertainment Month Pass for just £6.99.
