Prepare the Following:
Materials Needed:
Fold both Fabric 3 (backing) pieces in half wrong sides together, aligning the 6” edges to make a 4½ x 6” block.
Stitch the first step: the placement line for the batting.
Remove hoop from machine and place Fabric 1 (main background) right side up, along the fabric placement line.

Lay batting on top of the placement outline, making sure the stitch box is completely covered.

Lay Fabric 2 (small background) right side down, directly on top of Fabric 1 (main background), aligning the edge of both fabrics with the fabric placement line.

Stitch the next step on top of the batting: the fabric placement line.

Return hoop to the machine and stitch the next step: the seam stitch.
Flip Fabric 2 over and lightly press seam. Place paper tape along edges to prevent fabric from shifting.

Note: “Finger press” or use a mini craft iron to press along the seam line. When pressing the fabric with an iron, it is best to remove the hoop from the machine and press over an ironing board.

Stitch the next step: the mug rug outline. Remove paper tape.

Change thread to desired color. Stitch the next step: the crosshatch quilting over the entire mug rug.

A. Stitch the next step: the snowman face placement line.
B. Lay Fabric 4 (snowman face), right side up, covering the entire placement line.
C. Stitch the next step: the snowman face tack-down line.
D. Trim fabric close to the stitch line.

Note: Since the satin stitches will cover up these placement and tack-down stitches, you do not need to change thread colors yet.
Lay prepared backing pieces on top of the mug rug front with the folded edges overlapping in the middle approximately 1”. This will create an envelope-style closure.

Remove project from hoop. Trim mug rug leaving approximately ¼” seam allowance. Clip corners.

Note: Use Kimberbell Paper Tape along the fold to prevent the backing pieces from being caught by the machine foot during the final stitch.

Stitch the final stitch: the seam stitch.
Turn project right side out through the envelope closure. Press with steam for a nice, finished look. Poke corners with blunt tip to square.
