EXPEDITION VOYAGES A journey of discovery led by an expedition team into the heart and soul of Norway’s beautiful coast

AWAKEN YOUR INNER EXPLORER

DEAR EXPLORER

Hurtigruten has been travelling the length of Norway’s spectacular coastline for 123 years. With an appetite for new horizons, we also embark on exciting expedition voyages to Antarctica, the Amazon, Canada, Greenland, Brazil, and many others. Now, the best elements of these expeditions have been combined for our coastal route at our ‘home’ in Norway, creating a whole new voyage rich with new experiences. These unique Norway coastal expedition voyages are accompanied by a Hurtigruten expedition team; seasoned travellers, modern-day explorers, and kindred spirits in their love of adventure. Experts in their respective fields, these specialists will passionately present you with insights into Norway’s culture, wildlife, and landscapes; all to enhance your journey of inner and outer discovery. It will be our sincere pleasure to take you on a unique Hurtigruten voyage – an authentic adventure to show you a side of Norway’s coast that is rarely seen or experienced. Welcome aboard!

EXPLORING IN EXPERT HANDS Joining an expedition team lets you see Norway through native eyes. Together, with their guidance, you will share in new adventures, get closer and deeper into the culture and landscapes of Norway, and create stories that will be remembered forever.

© Ørjan Bertelsen

PARTNERS IN EXPLOR ATION Your expedition team will consist of four knowledgeable and highly-skilled fellow explorers; the expedition leader, assistant expedition leader, cultural presenter, and nature presenter, as well as local guest lecturers. Handpicked for their expertise of the local landscapes and relevant fields, they know the best spots to see, what wildlife is around, and, crucially, how to explore sustainably leaving as little footprint as possible.

© Ørjan Bertelsen

But, for a certainty, what makes them truly special as a Hurtigruten expedition team is how they share their irrepressible enthusiasm, passion, and curiosity for exploration.

GIVING YOU MORE On each day of your voyage, the expedition team will present you with fascinating talks on a wide range of topics such as glaciology, wildlife, fishing traditions, Viking history, Nordic folklore, geology, natural phenomena, botany, climate, ecology, and so much more. Your team will also organise several delicious tastings of fresh local food for you to sample. These added insights – and tasty treats – will greatly enrich your journey of inner and outer discovery.

SWAPPING STORIES After a heady day of active adventure and hiking, what better way to finish the day than relaxing and sharing a drink with your expedition team at the bar or the panorama lounge. Exchange tales of exploration over photos, socialise with your fellow travellers, enjoy a cultural performance, and whet your appetite for the next day’s many exciting experiences.

“I love sharing just how beautiful Norway is with those who come to explore it! As a team, we do our best to share our favourite places and experiences with you, and to give you a Hurtigruten journey you will never forget!” Karin Strand Hurtigruten Expedition Team Leader

Travelling aboard a Hurtigruten vessel offers you a rare opportunity to be part of the everyday life along the coast and to see things you just won’t get to see on other ships. It is a unique experience, with all the comforts you need, and all the charm you want.

SHIP-SHAPE LIFE

ESSENTIAL ELEMENT Our voyages along the coast are made all the more special because of the people that work on and travel with Hurtigruten. The families of ship Captains wave to them from the shore; a local elderly couple take their grandchildren out on the ship for the day; fellow travellers swap stories of adventure at the bar; fishermen pass their fresh catch to the ship’s chefs. These are the real, everyday people of the Norwegian coast. It is this genuine, local flavour that makes Hurtigruten so unique. SAILING IN A NEW ST YLE Four of the Hurtigruten fleet that travel the stunning Norway coast are undergoing extensive transformations in 2016. We are also pleased to welcome a brand new ship to the coastal route this summer: the MS Spitsbergen. These updated vessels remain true to our traditional values of classic exploration and authentic adventure. At the same time, they will also feel refreshed with top quality comfort and detailed design. SHIPS THAT SUSTAIN Along with an aesthetic makeover, the renovated ships, and the new ship MS Spitsbergen, have also made great strides in sustainability, efficiency, and environmental care. Hurtigruten remains committed to sourcing our materials and food locally and sustainably, both for the benefit of the small communities we visit, and to preserve the precious beauty of the fjords we travel through.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Hurtigruten is committed to sourcing the fresh food we serve on board locally and sustainably, for the benefit of small, family-run local businesses, and to preserve the precious beauty of the coast. Breakfast and lunch are generous buffets of homely Scandinavian fare, crispy pastries, traditional dishes, and cloudberry-infused recipes. Dinner is also informal but boasts delicious three-course set menus to delight your taste buds.

Cultural Voyage Are you more of a cultural connoisseur than a hardcore hiker? Our Cultural Voyage takes you on a journey to the stunning Norwegian scenery that inspired famous classical composer Edvard Grieg. You will cruise the coast from concert to concert, visit art galleries, and gain insights into the local folklore, history, and culture that have been shaped by the fjords. Some concerts are conducted in unique settings, like caves, former fish oil factories, and even an industrial marble mine.

AT HOME WITH HURTIGRUTEN Hurtigruten has been sailing Norway’s breathtaking coast for 123 years. It is our home, and we are as much part of the landscape as the ancient fjords themselves. A lifeline to the 34 ports and small communities we visit each day, Hurtigruten is an authentic, integral part of Norwegian coastal culture. Come ‘home’ with us, and experience a side to Norway few explorers ever see.

PREPARING FOR ADVENTURE With so much to experience on your voyage, such as exhilarating hikes and exciting excursions, you’ll want to ensure you are well prepared and well equipped for your journey into the true side of Norway’s coast and culture. Our expert expedition team give you some good ideas of how to prepare and what to bring.

© Ørjan Bertelsen

GEAR UP All specialist gear such as life jackets are provided on board before certain excursions like kayaking, but you’ll still want to ensure you have sturdy hiking boots suitable for rain and mud, thermal wear, and waterproof and windproof clothing. You’ll definitely need warm gloves, a hat, and a scarf for the winter months, and don’t forget the binoculars either for bird and whale watching.

UV protective sunglasses Sunglasses are an essential item whichever season you pick to travel in. Winter means there will be a good amount of snow and ice in the surrounding landscape, and without eye protection, the glare of the sun’s reflection can cause temporary snow blindness. Likewise, if exploring Norway’s breathtaking coast in the summer, your shades will come in handy for the midnight sun. Plus, you know you do look very cool wearing them.

up, and that your camera has a cord for your neck or wrist, so that it doesn’t accidentally get dropped in all the awe and excitement. No need to bring a smile for the photos – they will come all on their own during your voyage. Your inner explorer Hands down, the most vital element you will need on your journey is a sense of adventure and exploration. Don’t be afraid to jump in, feet first, to meet fellow explorers and locals alike. You will be seeing and tasting new things, and the right attitude will help you to really experience everything to the full. All that’s left to do then is to awaken your inner explorer and come aboard! © David Gonzalez
