1. Tonight’s game kicks off the 97th season of Kutztown University football. 2. The Golden Bears are coming off a 2011 season that saw the team win its first PSAC Championship and NCAA Playoff game. 3. KU was picked to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division. 4. This is the fifth all-time meeting between the schools, all since 2008. 5. Coach Monica and Coach Murphy have been on their respective sidelines for every meeting in the series. 6. Kutztown University senior quarterback Kevin Morton has been named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons. 7. 2011 was the second straight season in which KU set the school’s single season wins record, winning 11 games to eclipse the 10 won in 2010. 8. A powerful Kutztown offense set school records for points (487), passing touchdowns (41), total touchdowns (68), rushing yards (2,576), and total offense (6,048) in 2011. 9. Josh Mastromatto and Curtis Wortham lead a dangerous return game that led Division II in kickoff return average at 27.73 yards/return. 10. Kutztown and Saint Anselm have faced each other each team’s season opener in each of the last four seasons. KU has won each of the battles, including 56-30 win in Manchester, New Hampshire last season. The Golden Bears set a school record with 697 yards of total offense in that game as Kevin Morton threw for 313 yards and six touchdowns. Josh Mastromatto added 120 yards rushing.
Scouting the Hawks Head Coach Patrick Murphy • Coach Murphy is entering his fifth season as the head coach at Saint Anselm, his first collegiate head coaching position • He led the Hawks to a 1-9 mark last season with a 47-21 win over Pace • Saint Anselm won two games in each of his first three seasons • He has also served as an assistant at Harvard and UMass-Lowell The Hawks Offense • Seven starters return for Saint Anselm. • Last year’s leading receiver, Marc Wilson signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals • Fellow receiver Eric Feehan is the leading returning weapon after catching 41 passes for 561 yards and three scores • Sophomore Stephen Cuipa takes over at quarterback after going just 5-of-6 passing for 18 yards and an interception last season • The team’s leading rusher, Eric Charles returns. He tallied 349 yards and scored three times in 2011. • Left guard Zach Lombard was named to the All-Northeast 10 All-Rookie team as a freshman last season.
The Saint Anselm Defense • Nine total starters return from last seaon for the Hawks • Last year’s leading tackler, linebacker Shane O’Donnell has graduated after earning All-ECAC honors last season • Senior linebacker Chris Bent is the leading returning tackler after making 79 stops in 2011, including 11 for loss and 1.5 sacks • Defensive backs Ethan Sylvain and Tyler Jessie combined for nine interceptions last season. • Sylvain led the team with five from his strong safety position, while Jessie picked off four while playing corner. • Tyler Williams, a senior defensive lineman, is leading returner in the pass rush, after recording two sacks in 2011.

QUARTERBACK AARON CHANNING • True freshman will serve as the back up to Morton RUNNING BACK JOSH MASTROMATTO • Rushed for 706 yards and had 589 receiving yards on 60 receptions. • Including kick and punt returns he scored 11 total touchdowns in 2011 and had 2,070 all-purpose yards. • He had 11 catches for 131 yards against CW Post, and then had 132 yards rushing the following week at West Chester. • An All-PSAC East teamer, Mastromatto also had 129 yards receiving in the NCAA Second Round at New Haven. • The Golden Bears led Division II in kickoff returns with an average of 27.73 yards/ return with Mastromatto leading the way with a 29.54 return average that ranked him seventh. • He was also honored on the Beyond Sports Network All-Super Region One team this year, as well as earning a place on the All-PSAC East squad. • He was picked to the Don Hansen All-Super Region One Team at two different positions, all-purpose and return specialist. • Holds KU record for kickoff return average at 25.65 yards/return • Last season, set a Golden Bear mark with 709 kickoff return yards • Posted a Kutztown record 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against East Stroudsburg in 2011 • He had an 83-yard return for a touchdown against Bloomsburg on Nov. 5, • Only player in the PSAC with two kickoff return TDs in 2011. • He had 11 catches for 131 yards against C.W.
