Introduction I love lace knitting because by working those YOs and SSKs which seem to make no sense in the beginning, eventually I can create the most intricate lace patterns. I love the fact that when you have finished knitting a piece of lace, it usually resembles a worn out dishrag, but after blocking your project, the most amazing lace emerges from the stitches. I collect old bits of knitted lace and books that have lace knitting patterns. I was never sure what I would do with my treasure trove of knitted lace, but now I am able to share much of my collection with you. Naming the stitches wasn’t easy; sometimes I was able to give you the name of the stitch as it appeared in a very old book, but sometimes I gave the stitch my pet name. You won’t find any reference to gauge in this book because you can work these stitches with any type of yarn or thread you choose. Use the finest lace weight fiber for the most delicate of lace, or choose a worsted weight yarn for a completely different look. What you will find here is the word “multiple” at the start of each stitch pattern. A multiple is the number of stitches needed to work one complete unit of the pattern. If the pattern says “Multiple: 6+5”, you will need to cast on any number of stitches which can be evenly divided by 6: 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36 for example. To this you need to add the “+5” so you will cast on 5 more stitches to the total, giving, for example, 17, 23, 29, 35 or 41 stitches. It is important to remember that the “+” number is added just once. Pick your favorite stitch and get started creating magic: you won’t be able to stop.

Introduction I love lace knitting because by working those YOs and SSKs which seem to make no sense in the beginning, eventually I can create the most intricate lace patterns. I love the fact that when you have finished knitting a piece of lace, it usually resembles a worn out dishrag, but after blocking your project, the most amazing lace emerges from the stitches. I collect old bits of knitted lace and books that have lace knitting patterns. I was never sure what I would do with my treasure trove of knitted lace, but now I am able to share much of my collection with you. Naming the stitches wasn’t easy; sometimes I was able to give you the name of the stitch as it appeared in a very old book, but sometimes I gave the stitch my pet name. You won’t find any reference to gauge in this book because you can work these stitches with any type of yarn or thread you choose. Use the finest lace weight fiber for the most delicate of lace, or choose a worsted weight yarn for a completely different look. What you will find here is the word “multiple” at the start of each stitch pattern. A multiple is the number of stitches needed to work one complete unit of the pattern. If the pattern says “Multiple: 6+5”, you will need to cast on any number of stitches which can be evenly divided by 6: 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36 for example. To this you need to add the “+5” so you will cast on 5 more stitches to the total, giving, for example, 17, 23, 29, 35 or 41 stitches. It is important to remember that the “+” number is added just once. Pick your favorite stitch and get started creating magic: you won’t be able to stop.

These are Standard Symbols *An asterisk (or double asterisks**) in a pattern row, indicates a portion of instructions to be used more than once. For instance, “rep from * three times” means that after working the instructions once, you must work them again three times for a total of 4 times in all. ( ) Parentheses enclose instructions which are to be worked the number of times following the parentheses. For instance, “(K1, P2) 3 times” means that you knit one stitch and then purl two stitches, three times. [ ] Brackets are used in the same way as parentheses especially when there is more than one set of repeats such as [(K1, P1)twice, K5] 3 times.
