The Official Scorecard of Moorhead Youth Hockey MYHA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

2014-2015

The Offseason

Brian Stavenger President Executive Committee Equipment

First off, I want to congratulate all of you on a great season. While some teams had more success than others, I truly hope each player had fun and improved this season. While it’s difficult to end a season, it’s also an exciting time. The offseason is the best time to develop skill, speed, strength and athleticism. All players want to be better, make the top teams, get the most playing time, and win a bunch of games. Every player has the opportunity to take a huge step forward in the next eight months. So what can you do to improve?

Play Another Sport That’s right, do something away from the rink. No matter what sport you choose, you will develop skills that will translate on the ice. So stay active this off-season and improve your athleticism by playing a different sport. Get On The Ice While playing other sports will improve your athleticism, finding some ice time is important to perfect your hockey skills. The Moorhead community offers many different options in the off-season. Blue Line or Moorhead Girls Club will give you the coaching you need to improve your skills, while the open hockey offered by MYHA will allow you to experiment with your skills in a creative and fun environment. Get out there with your friends and have a good time getting better together! Stickhandling/Shooting Room Stickhandling and shooting should be the easiest thing to improve. Both are fun to do alone or with your friends and both can be improved quickly with plenty of repetitions. Above all, these can be done anywhere. MYHA has a great shooting and stickhandling room, but you can also do it in your own drive-way. Shooting 100 pucks and stickhandling for 15 minutes per day is a very realistic goal and you will be shocked with the progress that you can make over one offseason. Strength Training

Strength training is often overlooked on the girls’ side, but it is crucial to reaching your full potential as a hockey player. Strength improves every aspect of the game: skating, stickhandling, shooting, passing, and battling on the boards. It also decreases the likelihood of being sidelined with an injury during the season. There are many options in Moorhead to work with strength coaches over the off-season. For older kids, strength training could be what you need to take the next step in your hockey career. Congrats again on a great season by all teams in MYHA. I hope to see you all at the rink from time to time this summer! Emily Sell

NOMINATIONS FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS The MYHA Board of Directors has three (3) directors whose terms are ending soon. These positions will be filled by an election of the membership at our Annual Meeting, which will be held on Monday, May 4, 2015. At this time we are seeking nominations to fill these vacancies. The specific duties of these directors will be determined after they are elected to the Board. In order to receive the support of the nominating committee, the nominee must be willing to serve. This is an important consideration for the nominee and the nominee's family, as serving on the MYHA Board represents a commitment of time. Each member of MYHA has something to offer the Association, and serving on the Board is not something that should be decided on a whim. Attendance at the Board meetings and representing the membership is a large part of a director's duties. Other duties include delegating responsibilities to others to get projects completed, working with committee chair persons, and planning ahead to assure that MYHA will be a strong association in the future. Serving on the Board of Directors can be extremely rewarding. The nominating committee urges you to give consideration to becoming a candidate. If you are interested in being considered as a candidate, or if you have any questions about the Board or the nomination and election process, please contact one of the following individuals from our Nominating Committee: Brent Teiken (701) 306-5525 [email protected]

Stephanie Gess (218) 790-2345 [email protected]

If you are not interested in becoming a candidate for the Board of Directors, do consider seeking or accepting another leadership role in MYHA. While not everyone can serve on the Board of Directors, there is ample opportunity for everyone's involvement in this great organization.

Thank you for your consideration and involvement!

****JERSEY TURN IN****

MARCH 3 v 3 UPDATE

As the season ends for each respective level, parent coordinators will be collecting travel jerseys for turn in.

We begin 3 v 3 on March 9th! We have had fantastic response to the March 3 v 3 with over 250 skaters signed up.

The jerseys will be professionally laundered by Norris Laundry. If questions, contact your parent coordinator.

There is STILL time to register! Information and online registration is on the news feed of our website, www.moorheadyouthhockey.com Rob Gramer In House Hockey Director

If your player is practicing after school and you want to drop their bag off during the day please leave the bag in shooting room (south rink) in the area marked off. The room is warm and your player’s equipment will be warm when he comes to practice. If your player is finished with practice, and plans on taking his bag home but has dryland or is staying at the rink he must put his bag in north rink (area marked). Players with morning practices should leave equipment in north rink also. Please remind your player of this new policy. Rink attendants will remove any bags left in lobby for more than 5 minutes. MYHA is not responsible for any equipment that is damaged or stolen. Dennis Bushy—Arena Manager

What’s the deal with the Gopher flag? Are you curious as to why the Minnesota Gopher Hockey flag is flying at our youth arena? Does it make you smile? Or perhaps it offends you. Whatever the case, there must be some explanation as to why it is there. There is! Every fall MYHA has a Fall Social. Many of you have attended but several probably have not. During the social there are three different auctions: silent, live, and reverse. The reverse auction money is always designated for something specific that is needed or wanted by the organization. LAST year (2013) the reverse auction was specified for two flag poles with the American flag flying on one and either the Gopher or UND flag on the other. The winning bidders were Gopher fans which is why the maroon and gold flies here now. Yes, it took us over a year to get it up, but we wanted to show those true fans that we do take their loyalty seriously. Don’t worry North Dakota fans, your flag will also be flown.

Lobby Remodel Project This past fall social’s reverse auction proceeds were earmarked for a “lobby remodel” project. Thanks to donors, we raised just under $6500 to put towards this project. We formed a committee of members and office/arena staff to come up with a plan. Those committee members are: Kelli Dronen, Jeremy Hovde, David Thingvold, Scott Nath, Cody and Nichole Parr, Melissa Fabian, Julie Durgin, Alane Maixner and Dennis Bushy. As a group we decided to add 55” flat-screen TVs to the lobby and north rink mezzanine as well as custom made high-top tables, beautifully crafted by Cody Parr at Rempro. We also established and are enforcing a “NO-BAG” policy in the lobby. We hope these improvements help to make your time at the arena a little more enjoyable! Next up—possible added countertop seating in the South rink! STAY TUNED…..

Two online registration sessions offered for the 2015-2016 season! The season JUST ended…so why are we already discussing registration for the 2015-2016 season? While MYHA continues to do all we can to make hockey an affordable activity for all families, we understand that registration fees, along with all the other back-to-school costs, can add up quickly. MYHA wants to offer families as many options as possible to make it easier to pay for your child’s hockey season. So in addition to no increased fees for the 2015-2016 season, we are offering an “Early-Bird” registration with some easier payment options.

“Early-Bird” registration will be opening on June 1st! If you register online by June 30th, 2015, you will be given the option to pay in FIVE equal installments! If you choose this option the payment breakdown will be: 20% at the time of registration (between June 1 and June 30) 20% on July 15th 20% on August 15th 20% on September 15th 20% on October 15th (final payment) **All online payments do require a $5 processing fee per transaction *Early-Bird registration will close on June 30th!!!

The regular online registration session will open up on August 1 st, 2015. Payment plan options will be the same as the 2014-2015 season: 50% at the time of registration 25% on September 15th 25% on October 15th (final payment) **All online payments do require a $5 processing fee per transaction

For both registration sessions, you will also have the option to pay in full online or pay offline, with the understanding that offline payments will be due in full by October 15th, 2015.

Remember, you MUST register online with USA Hockey BEFORE you can complete Moorhead Youth Hockey’s online registration. USA Hockey’s registration opens on April 1st for the 2015-2016 season. We are also working with our software provider to set up a discount code for families whose fees would normally exceed the Family Max amount. During the online registration process, those families would be able to enter a discount code so that they are not charged more than the Max amount. Stay tuned for details on that… Please call Julie in the office with any questions.

Parent Surveys Parent Surveys are available on our website. Please take the time to fill out the survey and give us constructive feedback. This is one of your opportunities to provide comments, thoughts, and suggestions on ways we can improve our program. Thank You! Jeremy Gregoire Hockey Director
