FACS SEWING PROJECT Dear Parents/Guardians: As part of the Family & Consumer Science curriculum, your student will be constructing either a drawstring backpack or a lap quilt for a sewing project this semester. It is the responsibility of the student to provide all the needed sewing materials for the project of choice. The school will provide the sewing equipment such as shears, pin cushion, pins, sewing gauge, seam ripper, etc. for use in class. Also, a classroom “tote” will be assigned to each student for safe storage of the sewing project supplies. PLEASE NOTE: When selecting the project fabric, the FABRIC QUALITY is an important factor to consider. A project made using fabric with an uneven grain can be very difficult for the beginning sewer to lay out and assemble; therefore taking more time to complete. Please select from the following projects:
DRAWSTRING BACK PACK
- WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
o FABRIC: 1/2 yard woven cotton or cotton blend (gingham, chambray, light-weight canvas, etc.) o CORDING: 2 pieces of medium diameter cording and each 66” in length. The classroom sewing machine will not be able to penetrate cording that is too wide/thick as it is being sewn into the side seam. o THREAD: that matches the fabric
LAP QUILT - WHAT YOU WILL NEED: o FABRIC: One piece of fleece that is no more than 3 yards long. The fabric will be folded in half and then sewn on the other three sides. Please do not pick fabric that is too slick or stretchy. These two components make success difficult for the beginning sewer. o THREAD: that matches the fabric
