FAIR SHARE

Brhmie Balaram Researcher RSA Public Services & Communities

WHAT IS THE SHARING ECONOMY? • The sharing economy is a socio-economic system being built around the sharing of human and physical resources in response to the changing needs of people and the planet. • While sharing is not a new phenomenon, technology platforms have enabled sharing to scale in a way that was not previously possible.

BACKGROUND TO THE BRIEF

BACKGROUND TO THE BRIEF • Social and environmental good at the core of the ‘sharing economy’ • Can be challenging to sustain the social good as companies scale • Backlash against some of the most popular companies i.e. Uber (see ongoing lawsuits in California, US and Europe) • Labour market is changing (increasingly flexible, casualised) • Traditional businesses and industries feel threatened • Concerns about agency over data are arising • Difficult for government to regulate without stifling innovation

ABOUT ‘FAIR SHARE’ RESEARCH PROGRAMME

ABOUT ‘FAIR SHARE’ RESEARCH PROGRAMME • RSA developed a 12-month inquiry into how to shape the ‘sharing economy’ into a sector which drives sustainable economic growth and equality • Phase 1: Exploration – Understanding the evolution of the sharing economy globally and in all its forms • Phase 2: Consultation – A creative and collaborative approach to problem-solving, including the SDA brief • Culminating in a global summit (opportunity for brief winner(s) to speak about their submissions) • More information on our website in late October

‘FAIR SHARE’ BRIEF

‘FAIR SHARE’ BRIEF •

How can we keep the sharing economy fair so more people are willing and able to participate as individuals or as businesses?

The brief itself touches on the aforementioned issues, but in particular the changing nature of work as a result of technological advances that have made sharing on this scale possible.

Takes a positive approach to sharing economy – ultimately about trying to widen participation and scale the sector because we believe the underlying social and environmental good should be at the heart of our future economy more generally.

WELCOME RESPONSES TO THE BRIEF

WELCOME RESPONSES TO THE BRIEF Responses should empower people as individuals within a collective and demonstrate understanding importance of being interconnected within this new economy. Examples include: • a starter kit or product that promotes social entrepreneurship in the sharing economy • a service that enables greater trust so people are more willing to share with strangers • a product that allows users to make the most of their own 'reputation capital' • an incentive to encourage co-operative business models or similar • a reimagining of support systems for workers • a learning resource for traditional businesses interested in transitioning to a 'sharing model' • a campaign that helps users and workers understand rules and regulations around sharing • a tool that facilitates local networking with other participants in the sharing economy
