FAIRFIELD NEWS

Dear Parents and Carers, I can’t believe how quickly time has passed this half term. Everybody’s working extremely hard and the children have achieved some fantastic things – so here is our news!!! French Day It was brilliant to start the half term with a visit from Tomas – a teacher from our partner school in France. It was lovely to see the children talking with Tomas, finding out about his school and life in France, and tasting a few traditional french snacks (‘gouter’) and drinks. Thanks to Miss Standen and Mrs Gore for their careful planning and organisation!!

Safer Internet Parent’s Meeting Thanks to all the parents who managed to attend this meeting. Feedback was positive, and many parents took away some very useful resources. We’ve put these all onto the school website- section ‘Letters’, along with lots of other really supportive parent documents. We plan to hold this meeting annually so try and come along next time to catch up with the latest relevant information.

World Book Day The School Council did a smashing job organising our World book day on Thursday March 3 rd. The sharing of fiction & non-fiction books worked really well across all classes, and the dressing up as a favorite book character was fabulous. Thanks to everyone for their efforts on the day!!! The costume ‘catwalk’ in the afternoon, judged by our esteemed panel (Mr Watson, Mrs Cluely and Mrs Goodger), was my particular favorite part of the day and seemingly enjoyed by all. Congratulations to James Wareham & Rihanna Keenan (Best boy and girl costume KS1) & Millie Sanders and Luca Tweddle (Best boy and girl costume KS2). Mr Keene romped victorious in the adult category!!!

Sickness/Illness There has been a lot of sickness at school recently. Please remember it is school policy/procedure that children need to be off school for 48 hours following a bout of sickness to ensure the health and well-being of all at school.

Why not visit the School Nurse website www.healthforkids.co.uk. This website is aimed for children, young people, parents/carers, and has fun and interactive health advice and support. Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits I can only describe the Year 3, 4 and 5 children’s performances as amazing!! The children’s hard work, enthusiasm and effort had to be commended… and… put together in an unbelievably short space of time. I certainly chuckled my way through each performance and left feeling very proud of each and every one of the children!! 90 little stars!! Thanks to all the staff for their hard work, with a special mention to Mrs Elliott & Humphrey the camel. It was also lovely to have Mr Chester, part of the script publication team, travel from Lincolnshire to watch the performance on Tuesday night and say some lovely things about the Fairfield children!!

Musical Performance at SWHS This week the children in our school choir joined together with other children from Glenhills, Parklands and South Wigston High school to put on a Performing Arts Concert for parents. It was a fabulous evening thoroughly enjoyed by Mr Sutcliffe. Thanks to Mrs Elliott and Mrs Holyoak for accompanying the children.

Donations of Lego We are in need of lego. If anyone has any surplus stocks or no longer uses the stocks they have, and are willing to donate to the school, this would be mightily appreciated! Glencroft Church Visit Years 3, 4 and 5 had a smashing time last Tuesday at Glencroft Church in Wigston. The children spent the morning listening to a group of actors talk about events from the bible & the life of Jesus via their fantastic interactive boards, as well as having time to dress up. All the children had fun and built on their learning in RE. Results from the Spring Spelling Bee Competition (News just in….) All vouchers collected will be used to purchase playground equipment/toys to be used by all the children in the school.

Triad Visit (School to School Support) Fairfield, as part of the Symphony Learning group, have received a visit from 2 successful current head teachers working within Leicestershire. The visit involved the two head teachers spending the morning in classes observing teaching and learning. The feedback/report following was very positive. Both head teachers left taking with them some ‘outstanding practice’ they want to embed in their own schools.

Sport Relief 2016 The children came dressed in something ‘sporty’ and took part in some Obstacle (KS1) & Zumba fun (KS2), organised by Miss Jones & Mrs Semaine. It was great to see the children trying something new and all for a very good cause. Thanks everyone for your kind donations and support of the event – we’ll post how much we have raised once it has been counted.

Sport

The boys and girls have again performed very well in a variety of inter-school sporting events. Congratulations to all 5 acts (Yrs 3 – 6) selected to represent Fairfield at the SWHS Dance Festival. Choreographed by themselves, the children worked really well together to ‘Wow’ the spectators. Special congratulations to Mary Smith in Year 6, who danced a solo, winning first prize for the most expressive dance. Mrs Semaine & Mrs Dunkley were very proud of all the Fairfield children performing. The wet weather has played havoc with the pitches in late January and February, forcing the Year 5/6 girl’s football tournament to be cancelled. The Year 4 / 5 boy’s team has continued their winning streak. In the league this half term, they have beaten Glenmere 3-1 and Glen Hills 4 – 2. With a couple of league fixtures to go and a semi-final match against Glen Hills planned for after Easter, the boys and Mr ‘Claudio Ranieri’ Keene is hoping we continue to play well and possibly go onto win something. Come on the Blues!!! A number of children in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 represented the school in the Oadby & Wigston Cross Country Event at Bushloe High School. We were especially pleased with the 4 children who finished in the top 10 of their respective races, qualifying to represent Oadby & Wigston in the County Finals at Belvoir Castle. This took place last Saturday. Well done to all our runners who have shown commitment and improvements race on race!!! Mrs Semaine is looking forward to taking a number of children from Fairfield to compete in the Oadby & Wigston netball tournament. We look forward to reporting on how they got on in the next newsletter.
