Ministry of Women Newsletter Fall 2014

Words Spoken in Season Proverbs 15:23 “To make an apt answer is joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is!” From time to time, some really godly advice comes my way, usually via an older woman who has lived my experiences or who has some insight into an area that might be new territory for me. I appreciate these wisdom nuggets especially when they are gentle, kind and grounded in the Word. Are our words to our sisters in Christ gentle and spoken in season? Or, do we find ourselves dispensing advice that was not asked for? Are we heeding James' warnings about the dangers of a tongue that is quick to speak? James 4:11, “Do not speak evil against one another.” I ask these questions because I know it is easy to hold our choices and decisions up as the ‘standard’ and hurt others.

Beth Ann Wiersma Let’s be careful with what we ask and how we ask it. Consider that the unmarried woman may not, in fact, be lonely. Consider that the childless couple may be hurt each time they are asked about when they are starting a family. Consider that the number of children in a particular family is a matter between a husband, wife and the Lord and doesn't warrant anyone's commentary. Consider that we differ in the non-essentials, and your decision to vaccinate your children or not ought not to be touted as the best or only choice. Consider refraining from asking if this child is "the last one." These decisions are personal and we know there is no right standard in them. Another area we need to be careful with is the dispensing of advice. Is our opinion or expertise in the matter being sought? If not, be slow

to speak. James 1:19b, “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” Isn’t it interesting that after speaking comes anger? Don’t you wonder what kind of connections James is making for us here. The “taming the tongue” section doesn’t start until chapter 3 of James: consider reading it as part of your personal devotions this week. Let’s all work hard this year to demonstrate sisterly affection, and this means we need to act with humility, self-control, gentleness and kindness. These "fruits" are part of our spiritual maturity: let's be sure that we are growing here too. Galatians 5:22, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

Our mentoring program is going well with 10 women mentoring 14 younger ladies in our church. We are thankful for the guideline Scripture gives us in Titus. It’s been almost a full year since we began our mentoring program, and in June we met up with the mentors again for a time of encouragement and support. The feedback from these gals was extremely encouraging to us. Truly, this is exactly what God wants for these gals. Blessing and growth (on both parts) was the overall comment. If you missed the last opportunity to be mentored, but would like to take part in the next session that will, Lord willing, be set up for January 2015, please contact Anne Ottaway or Deb Bydeley for details. Galatians Galatians is an excellent book to study today because its focus is on the truth of Scripture that salvation is found in faith alone in the work of Christ, His death, burial, and resurrection. Just as the Judaeizers of Paul’s day taught that works are to be added to faith, so today the same message is being taught. Galatians refutes that teaching and gives sound doctrine for our faith. We will see that it is a book of great encouragement to us. Come join Pat Freeman Monday evenings at 7:00 as we take a closer look into this book.

Hebrews Part 1: Consider Jesus, Your Merciful High Priest

Philippians: Christ, the Source of Joy and Strength

In these last days, God has spoken to us in His Son. What does He say about Jesus, angels, and our great salvation? Learn about Jesus' superiority to all in this exciting study of Hebrews 1- 4 that enlightens and enlivens Old Testament law and prophecy.

This spring I was “blown away” by a series entitled, "Remembering What Not to Forget" by John MacArthur. Just like the Apostle Paul, MacArthur urged his congregants to remember what is so important not to forget...the Joy of our Salvation! Paul wrote this joy-filled letter to the church of Philippi, a church that had become self-sufficient and complacent.

Come join Gloria Burgess as she facilitates this Precept Upon Precept study Tuesday mornings. Study materials cost $27.

Desiring God's Own Heart: 1 & 2 Samuel/1 Chronicles During Israel's transition from judges to kings, two men appeared. One followed humbly after God's heart; the other proudly rejected His counsel. See how God protected the man after His own heart. Learn how to trust Him when the odds seem stacked against you. This is a Precept Overview Study, and the cost of the book is $10. For those who wish to go deeper, the Precept Upon Precept material will be available for $20.

We are like that church, especially in our affluent culture in which it is so easy to feel self-sufficient and be complacent about our faith. During this study we will be reminded of and relearn many spiritual truths and practical matters that are so important not to forget as we continue to grow in CHRIST JESUS, OUR LORD. We will be using a John MacArthur study guide for this class. The cost of the book is $7 and is available in the church office. This class will run Tuesday mornings and will be facilitated by Anna Jamieson.

Trudy Stamos will lead this class on Tuesday mornings and offer a repeat on Thursday evenings.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. Titus 2:11-14 (ESV) EXALT Class for Women: "Letting Go of Perfect" Starting September 14th, an EXALT class based on this book by Amy E. Spiegel will be running for seven weeks. The subtitle of this book is Authenticity, Expectations and Women. The class will address the expectations we place on ourselves and others, and how to re-focus our lives on the way God expects us to live. It's about the grace and mercy that's been shown to us, and how we might translate that into our own lives and our relationships with our sisters in the Lord. Copies of the book are available from the church office for $5. I would suggest that you read the book before the class starts, though it is possible to read a few chapters from week to week. It's not a difficult read, and it is easy to pick the book up after each chapter and continue reading. I would love to see you at the class: it's geared to women 45 years old and younger (had to make sure I included myself in that group). - Beth Ann For the tech savvy woman, the Kindle version of this book is available on www.amazon.ca for just $1.07 CDN.
