Congratulations on your upcoming graduation from Cal Poly! This instructional
pamphlet provides information for individuals participating in the Fall 2014 Commencement Ceremony scheduled for Saturday, December 13. • 9 a.m. ceremony: Degrees will be confirmed for graduates of the College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences and the College of Science and Mathematics. • 1 p.m. ceremony: Degrees will be confirmed for graduates of the College of Liberal Arts, and the Orfalea College of Business. • 4 p.m. ceremony: Degrees will be confirmed for the graduates of the College of Architecture & Environmental Design and the College of Engineering. Commencement is a joyous, celebratory and dignified occasion where tradition is honored and graduates join together with faculty, staff, family supporters and their fellow graduates to celebrate this great achievement! Please remember that pride, responsibility and character are the Mustang Way and we ask that you show respect during the commencement ceremonies.
Please be advised: Alcohol, fireworks, glass bottles, weapons, balloons, balls or any items that detract from the dignity of the ceremony are prohibited.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE Allow ample time to get to campus, park and make your way to the assembly site. University roads and facilities may be congested. Dress is full academic regalia, including black gown, black mortar board and tassel. Tassels on caps are traditionally worn on the right side until the President confers degrees. Tassels are moved to the left to signify graduation. Graduate seating is on the gymnasium floor at the Recreation Center. Wear sensible shoes for walking on hard concrete and gymnasium floor. Do not bring pets to the campus. There is no provision in the assembly area for coats, purses or other valuables.
REPORT TO YOUR COLLEGE ASSEMBLY SITE The assembly site is the west side of the Recreation Center. Please arrive by 8:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m. or 3:15 p.m. depending on your ceremony time. Upon arrival, please complete your name card at the reception tables. Be sure to locate your name in the commencement program, if it is followed by an icon indicating Cum laude [C], Magna cum laude [M], or Summa cum laude [S], Cal Poly Scholar [P], Cal Poly Honors [H] and/or Academic Excellence [E], write the designation(s) on the name card where indicated to receive proper recognition when your name is read. In the event of rain, candidates enter the building through the Recreation Center main lobby and gather at the inside Rec Gym. Marshals will confiscate any food, beverage or objects with the exception of flowers that are carried or worn and are not part of the academic regalia. The meeting times are: 8:15 a.m. College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences College of Science & Mathematics 12:15 p.m. College of Liberal Arts Orfalea College of Business 3:15 p.m. College of Architecture & Environmental Design College of Engineering Relatives, supporters and friends will proceed to the Recreation Center and are not advised to join the graduates in the assembly site. Please arrange a meeting point at the post-commencement reception at the University Union Plaza or another location on campus.

PROCESSIONAL College marshals and assisting faculty will arrange participants as follows: 1) master’s marshal, 2) master’s degree candidates 3) college marshals 4) bachelor’s degree candidates and credential candidates, and 5) faculty. Listen for instructions from your college marshals and faculty. All graduates must sit with their college. The college marshals prompt graduates to form a double line. Graduates whom are master’s degree candidates (regardless of college) and bachelor’s degree candidates (in college order) march in columns from the assembly area into the main gymnasium in single file lines at a uniform pace. The dignity of the processional serves to create a lasting impression for all graduates and guess in attendance. Follow the college marshal through the gymnasium doors to the designated seating area. You will be led to the front of the seating area and directed to enter a row. Stop at a chair next to the candidate ahead of you, turn and face the podium, and remain standing. Avoid crowding and unnecessary movement. Members of the faculty sit directly behind the graduates. Remain standing upon reaching your designated seating location and while the president’s platform party is seated. It is customary for male candidates to remove their caps during the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.
PRESENTATION OF THE CLASS & CONFERRING OF DEGREES Master’s degree candidates: Master’s degrees are conferred first. Follow your marshal to the platform. Tassels are worn on the right side of the cap. Move across the platform when directed to do so by the graduate marshal. Provost Enz Finken will place your hood from behind you. Stand facing the graduate audience while your hood is placed to ensure guests can view this and the photographer captures the proper angle. Shake hands with President Armstrong. Remain standing on the platform footprints as your photo is taken with the president. Continue across the stage, return to your seat and remain standing until all master’s degree candidates’ are recognized. Bachelor’s degree candidates: Bachelor’s degrees are then conferred in college order. Tassels are worn on the right side of the cap. When your dean calls your college, stand and follow your marshal to the platform and present your name card to the assistant marshal. Your name is read as you proceed across the platform. Shake hands with President Armstrong. Remain standing on the platform footprints as your photo is taken with the president. Return to your seat and remain standing until all bachelor’s degree candidates’ from your colleges are recognized. Graduation photographs are available to you for purchase through Ultimate Exposures. You are under no obligation to purchase photographs, although soon after graduation you will receive a proof of your images taken during the ceremony.

RECESSIONAL
At the conclusion of the Alma Mater, the president’s party departs the platform and exits the gymnasium. Starting with the front rows, college marshals will lead graduates out of the gymnasium to the University Union plaza. It is important that graduates continue moving to the University Union plaza to avoid congestion near the doors of the Recreation Center. Please arrange to meet your guests at/near the University Union plaza.
POST COMMENCEMENT
Parents, families, spouses and friends are invited to join graduates at the University Union plaza for a post-commencement reception. Photographs can be taken at this time. The commencement ceremony is a symbolic celebration of graduation. Degrees are official when noted on the academic record by the Registrar. On behalf of Cal Poly, we hope you have an enjoyable day and that this ceremony be a cherished memory for you and your guests.
