Fall Fling Past and Halloween Social Future by Sandy Purrington Another Fine Fall Fling – This year we welcomed the arrival of autumn, the beginning of a new academic year and the approach of harvest season in a new venue – Presque Isle Park. More than 50 folks showed up on a crisp, sunny afternoon for burgers and brats grilled to perfection by the peerless Dan Carpenter, Judd Spray, and Ross Johnson. As usual, there were lots of great dishes to pass, and all attendees seemed to leave at least as happy and a bit heavier than when they arrived. We’ve already reserved the larger, enclosed pavilion for next year! Halloween Eve Dance and Pie Social – Once again, we will observe All Hallows Eve the night before so that all so inclined are free to trick-or-treat on the official Halloween. On Thursday, October 30, from 7-9 pm, we will gather in the chapel for an evening of dancing, conversation and pie. Dance or simply listen to ‘50s and ‘60s classics DJ’ed by Melissa and Burt with sublime interludes by Michael and Erika Waite, singer-songwriter and artistic dancer respectively; Middle Eastern folk dancing led by Mary and Hermiz Mikhael; European folk dances with Bob and Nancy Railey; and Dances of Universal Peace under the guidance of Iris, Melissa and Kevin. Please bring your favorite pie to share. Coffee, soft drinks and utensils will be provided. Costumes are optional but strongly encouraged (“All are Invited”). Join our St. Paul’s family for a wonderful evening!

From Bob Railey’s Pen Preaching workshop previously scheduled for September 27 has been rescheduled for November 8 at 11:00 a.m. Annual Marquette County Hunger Walk Sunday, October 5 Please donate generously to any of our St. Paul’s teams with Hunger Walk envelopes. Donations go 75% to combat world hunger, and 25% to the same local food pantries that receive our nonperishable food donations. Checks must be made out to “CWS/CROP” (CROP is the global hunger relief agency of Church World Service). Donations may also be made on-line: Go to the CWS web-site: www.cwsglobal.org; Select “CROP Hunger Walk;” Select “find a walk;” Click on Michigan on the map; Scroll down to “Marquette County” and click on that; Click on “donate;” Click on “support a walker;” Enter walker name; Click on “donate now.” While walkers’ envelopes with all cash/check donations must be turned in on the day of the walk, on -line donations may be made for quite some time after October 5. As of this writing, St. Paul’s walkers are Kayla West, Melissa Eiben, Sandy Purrington, and Bob Railey. As usual, we are grateful to our friends at ELCA for organizing this annual, ecumenical fundraising effort.

Funeral Teams

by Jacquey Shellenbarger

St. Paul’s funeral teams, made up of members of our congregation, are three groups and each group works every third funeral reception. Each team consists of the actual workers and also ‘stand by’ volunteers who assist when needed. Each team also has volunteers who bake sweets for their team’s funeral reception. Well, here comes the ‘pitch’. We are in need of more team members. It’s best to ask congregation members personally. You’ve seen the listing of products: Good, Better or Best? Well this is the better way! Do you think you could work on one of these teams, every third funeral? And—it’s not written in stone that you have to continue forever, if it doesn’t work out for you! So, please contact me, Jacquey Shellenbarger, [email protected] or call me at 235-7533. And a big thank you and welcome to Cindy Weston, an addition to Meg Goodrich’s team.

Junior Warden Report

by Jeff Hendricks

As the seasons change, we are also experiencing a change in activities and programs at St. Paul’s. After the late summer doldrums, a surge of activities has brought new life into our parish. As a steward of the church, I have joined with other parishioners in an effort to reorganize our storage facilities. With programs like Camp New Day, Room at the Inn, International Craft Fair, White Elephant…. you understand, we are trying to make space for stored items that are used to run these necessary programs. Separation and organization seems to be the best course of action to help all of the personnel involved. It will take a concerted effort of our congregation to relocate or dispose of unused or once used items, so we can maximize the space we have available. Your understanding, support and help are appreciated. Other activities with our buildings include a refurbishing of various portions of the wood plank floors. This past month, the north entrance and the stairwell to the great room received a much needed touch up and an application of fresh paint. Thanks, Kathy, for a job well done! There will be some additional exterior work involving patching and painting of walls and a touch up of the north and south access areas. One of the main goals, concerning the operation of our buildings, will be energy conservation. Future changes, such as energy efficient lighting, mechanical control and the exploration of energy abatement, will help to offset the ever-increasing energy costs. Food for Thought: Remember that a ship that is not overloaded and heavy will move through the water with less effort.

Stewardship Appeal in October

by Dennis West

As autumn sets in, it is time to begin thinking about our pledges to our Church Community. During October we will be asking you to consider what you might pledge in support of the Church’s program for 2015. That last two years, the generosity of this congregation in support of our community has been amazing. Please begin your thoughtful consideration of what you may be able to commit to in support of St. Paul’s programs and legacy. Thank you.

White Elephant Sale

by Jacquey Shellenbarger

This year’s White Elephant Sale donations/sales will benefit Camp New Day U. P. The collection of items has already started and they are being stored at the church. Please consider donating items (except clothing) by dropping them off in the box by the back door coat rack. Possible donations may be: jewelry, summer caps, CDs, movies, dishes, pans, towels, sheets, bedspreads, lamps, table cloths, books, curtains, holiday and outdoor decorations, small pieces of furniture, picture frames, camping gear, anything someone would want to use that’s in good condition. We want to help send as many children to camp as possible and what a good feeling you will have by helping out!
