FALL ON ICE, CLIMBING UNROPED California, Palisade Glacier I (L. Collett, age 39) was several feet from the top of a small glacier or ice field couloir. T h e ice was quite exposed with very little snow crust. T h e slope was approxim ately 50 degrees. I believe I was looking up at a rock form ation and I simply placed my cram pons poorly— probably stepped on bare ice. I self-arrest ed immediately, but my foot must have been twisted. T h e doctor said it was se verely sprained with a possible small fracture. (Source: L. Collett)
Analysis Falling is a sure cure for inattentiveness. N ext time I will be m ore alert and not take my ability, my equipm ent, or the m ountain for granted. (Source: L. Collett)
