Family Matters After much prayer, research, deliberation and consultation, in conference, March 20, 2011, Morningside Baptist Church adopted a Master Plan. The following October, Morningside accepted the eight-step recommendation of the Finance Committee that helps us determine “a course of action” and God's direction for Phase One of that plan. The focus of Phase One is a place for children, a place that looks inviting and feels exciting, a place that captures their imaginations and brings families together because families matter and Family Matters gives us an opportunity to achieve the vision. Vision involves the size of what we want to create in the future.

“This will be written for a future generation,. that a people not yet created may praise the Lord.” - Psalm 102:18

Our Vision To be the place where Columbus worships.

Our Mission To know Jesus Christ and to make Him known.

Celebrating Our Past This year, Morningside celebrates 60 years as a church family. A vision for Family Ministry started long ago with the people of Morningside who wanted to reach a community, a community full of new homes and young families. Those families mattered to God so they mattered to this church. The original community has grown. It now stretches beyond the Morningside district to a city, a county – several cities and several counties – full of new homes and young families. Those families matter to God and they matter to us.

Reflecting on Our Present Our pastor, staff and elders developed a five-year plan for outreach and growth…a Blueprint for Morningside. That plan was presented to the church in the fall of 2011, and includes several significant milestones: 

Create 10 new Sunday School classes (4 new classes to date, with 2 new classes scheduled this spring)

Build the Student Ministry (60+ students attended DNow)

Adopt a Master Plan for Morningside (October, 2011)

Adopt a Master Plan course of action (Finance Committee’s 8-step plan for Phase One of Master Plan October, 2011)

Launch a 3rd Worship Venue (“Authentic” - February, 2012)

Begin a stewardship effort for Phase One of the Master Plan (Family Matters announced March, 2012)

The Blueprint aligns with the Finance Committee’s plan to determine Morningside’s ability to proceed with Phase One of the Master Plan. The initial design of Phase One calls for two floors of children’s space: their place in every way…sight, size, sound, light and atmosphere. It calls for a safe, secure, inviting, one-stop place where mom and dad feel good about entrusting their little ones to our care. The new, two-story structure attaches to our existing Building D, and allows families to move between the two buildings under one roof. Building D will receive a much needed face lift. The best time to prepare for expansion is during contraction. We started developing this plan for enhancing our family ministry two years ago. Much prayer and preparation bring us to this point.

Building Our Future Family Matters moves Morningside one step closer to realizing a vision of a safe, secure and inviting children’s space: their place. It is a vision for families and children that the church saw as far back as 1962. Children lead the way in America because families want the best for them. Children lead families to neighborhoods, restaurants and places of worship. When children lead, they bring families with them. While we are blessed to have outstanding staff, programs, and dedicated volunteers in the Children’s Ministry at Morningside, we have a desperate need for the ‘right space’ if we are to grow this ministry. In addition, we have security considerations for our children that did not exist when our current facilities were constructed. It is our strong desire to provide a safe, healthy environment in which our children can learn and grow spiritually.

The Family Matters goal is $2.3 million The church Finance Committee proposed an eight-step recommendation that should be met before proceeding with Phase One of the Master Plan. These steps were approved by the church on October 9, 2011. The first five recommendations, outlined on Blueprint Sunday, have been accomplished: 1. Secure a letter of intent from financial institutions 2. Fill staff vacancies (a minimum of one) 3. Engage Generis, a stewardship consultant firm, to lead a stewardship emphasis 4. Launch a stewardship program in the fall of 2011 5. Engage CDH Partners, an architectural firm, to proceed with construction drawings and engineering studies for Phase One 6. Attain cash equivalent of 25% for construction costs (includes Building Fund total, items paid prior to construction, and First Fruits gifts to be received on Celebration Sunday, June 3, 2012.) 7. Receive pledges that are greater than, or equal to, 25% of the construction budget 8. Proceed with groundbreaking. (Following our Family Matters Focus, Morningside will have the opportunity to vote about proceeding with Phase One of the Master Plan.) In order to meet the recommendations established by the Finance Committee, the Leadership of Morningside Baptist church and our consulting firm, Generis, have established a Family Matters Goal of $2.3 million. This goal makes a strong statement about how much Family Matters at Morningside. We also have a miracle goal of $4 million. If we reach the miracle goal, we will be over halfway toward the total cost of the Children’s Building which was originally conceived as a 3-year giving plan.

What are we doing? After months of prayer, research, deliberation and consultation, the church adopted a Master Plan in conference, March 20, 2011. Phase One of that plan prioritizes family and children’s ministry. Why are we doing this? Morningside first put paper and pencil to the vision in 1962. Those earlier drawings reflect the purpose and design of Morningside…to reach and disciple young families.

Why are we doing this now? Our confidence comes from God. Times, epochs, phases and economies all come from Him. The current economic situation presents challenges for everyone. Simultaneously, it presents a great opportunity for us as a church. Construction and material costs remain relatively low, giving us a cost advantage. How are we going to pay for this? We started saving for Phase One over 17 months ago. Part of our yearly budget – $30,000.00 per month – goes into the Building Fund. This fund stands as part of a “course of action” presented by the Finance Committee and adopted in conference October 9, 2011.

God Matters......Discipleship Matters

Does that mean we voted to borrow money and construct a building last October? No. It means we stand ready to take the next right step, Family Matters, a stewardship emphasis for our church. Does it mean we break ground immediately after completing the Family Matters Focus? No. We make a decision about proceeding with construction after we assess the outcome of the Family Matters pledges and the First Fruits giving as of Celebration Sunday. Effectively, we then ask God, “What now?”

What is the estimated cost? The estimated cost of Phase One is $6.7 million…final costs will be determined after architectural drawings are completed and bids are received. Does that mean we are going to borrow $6.7 million dollars? No. As of March 1, 2012, we have set aside $540,000 in the building fund. We plan to continue to contribute the $30,000 per month until Phase One is completed and paid for.

s......Today Matters......Tomorrow Matters......Legacy Matters......Family Matters

Will my giving be tax deductible? Yes. All contributions to the church are tax deductible, whether your gift is cash or non-cash assets. Why should I give over and above what I already give to the church? Giving is God-like. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” John 3:16 “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. That thought He was rich, yes for your sake He became poor. So that you through His poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9 “It is more blessed to give that to receive.” Acts 20:25 “Give and it will be given to you...pressed down, shaken together and running over.” Luke 6:38

How do we get involved with Family Matters? Pray The scope of Phase One is big, but not too big for God. Family Matters is about seeking God, first and foremost. Consider Your Gift The gift you make involves a 3-year commitment above and beyond your current level of giving. Consider your gift before the Lord and follow His leading by faith. Utilize Your Faith Take a step of faith and keep believing that our Lord will use you to build His church. “I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.” Matthew 16:18 Make Your Commitment Commitment Sunday, May 20, 2012 is the day you disclose your intent to support the work of God through Family Matters…the commitment of a 3-year pledge above and beyond your normal level of giving. Give the first of your 3-year commitment “whatever He says to you” on Celebration Sunday, June 3, 2012. Remember, we anticipate having 25% of the cost of construction available on Celebration Sunday.

As outlined by our Finance Committee, we have two opportunities to support Family Matters: We can pray and consider our gift as we make 3-year pledges on Commitment Sunday, May 20th. We can utilize our faith and make a commitment as we bring the “first fruit” or the first portion of our 3-year pledge on Celebration Sunday, June 3rd.

How am I going to be able to make a significant gift to Family Matters? Giving is a family matter, and His family matters. We are simply His steward of all that we possess. Give to His family as He directs you. “Whatever He says to you, do it.” John 2:5

“I will not offer to God that which costs me nothing. If it’s for my God, then my gift must have meaning and value to me.” 2 Samuel 24:24
