LA TECH WRAPS UP BASKETBALL HOF INVITATIONAL AT MEMPHIS
Louisiana Tech will wrap up its participation in the 2015 Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational on Tuesday night when they travel to take on Memphis at 8 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network. The two returning starters, Alex Hamilton and Erik McCree, are each averaging 15 points per game, but it has been a collective scoring effort that has helped produce five straight wins. In all, eight different Bulldogs have scored double digit points in at least one game this season.
•
BULLDOGS STAY UNDEFEATED WITH RALLY AGAINST EAGLES
On an off-shooting night, Louisiana Tech had to turn to its defense to try to remain undefeated and that is exactly what it did. The Bulldogs ended up forcing 22 turnovers and held North Carolina Central to 28 percent shooting in coming away with a 71-50 victory. The Bulldogs came into tonight having scored at least 80 points in every game this season, a first since 1973, and Alex Hamilton and Erik McCree had scored in double figures in every game this season, but none of the above happened yet LA Tech still managed to win by 21 against NCCU who had made back-to-back trips to the postseason.
•
WHAT A START
The Bulldogs are off to their best start since the 1990-91 season which was the last time they made it to the NCAA Tournament. A win against Memphis would be the best start in program history since the 1984-85 Bulldogs who opened the season with 10 straight victories, including a win against No. 6-ranked Louisville. That squad eventually went on to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Konkol comes to Ruston having spent the past four seasons on the staff of Miami’s head coach Jim Larranaga where they combined to go 7-5 against national powers Duke and North Carolina. Prior to that, he was with Larranaga for seven years at George Mason. Known as the team’s offensive coordinator, he aided the 2014-15 Hurricanes team to a 25-13 record, the second most wins in program history, and an appearance in the NIT Championship game.
ERICKONKOL
Miami snapped two impressive winning streaks along the way, defeating eventual national champion Duke, 90-74, at Cameron Indoor Stadium, ending the Blue Devils’ 41-game home winning streak which was the longest active streak in Division I at the time. In his third season at Miami, Konkol and the Canes returned no starters from the previous season, but the team still posted its seventh-straight winning season with a 17-16 overall record. The program saw several firsts in his second season, including the Canes ACC regular season and tournament championships, a No. 2 national ranking and 29 total victories. Miami matched program bests in earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and playing in the Sweet 16. Konkol helped lead Miami that season to four 20+ point wins over ACC opponents, including a 27-point rout of No. 1 Duke and a 26-point victory against North Carolina. Miami was the first team to beat Duke and UNC by 25+ points since the start of ACC play in 1953. Konkol worked daily with ACC and Lute Olson National Player of the Year and All-American Shane Larkin, who left UM after his sophomore season to enter the 2013 NBA Draft. In Konkol’s first year in Coral Gables, UM teetered on the edge of The Dance bubble, then went 1-1 in the ACC Tournament and ended up in the NIT, defeating Valparaiso, but falling to Minnesota. Konkol previously worked from 2002 through 2005 and 2007 through 2011 at George Mason with Larranaga. In the interim, he spent two years coaching at national power Hopkins High School in Minnesota under Ken Novak, Jr. He helped guide the Patriots to four-straight postseason appearances for the first time in Mason history - including NCAA berths in 2008 and 2011. In 2011, the team defeated Villanova to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, earned a regular season CAA title and posted a school record-tying 27 wins. A native of Amherst, Wis., Konkol is a 2000 graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. He played three seasons of basketball for the Division III program - advancing to the national championship game in 2000.

ABOUT THE TIGERS Memphis has a lot of experience in the starting lineup as they return four starters, but the Tigers have also infused a lot of young talent with the addition of seven freshman which were part of a top 25 recruiting class. The Tigers beat C-USA foe Southern Miss in the season opener and then lost by just six points to No. 8-ranked Oklahoma. In the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational, Memphis has gone 2-1 with victories over Grambling State and an overtime thriller versus Ohio State, but the loss came at the hands of UT Arlington on Nov. 23 by a score of 68-64. They are led by Josh Pastner (now in his seventh season) who has the second most wins of any Division I head coach under the age of 40. On the court, Memphis is led by the tandem of freshman forward Dedric Lawson who is averaging 15.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game and senior forward Shaq Goodwin who averages 12.2 points and 8.4 boards per game. SERIES HISTORY LA Tech and Memphis have each won two games in the series. The two teams played a home-andhome during the 1952-53 season with the home squad winning each game. The next meeting did not come until Dec. 20, 2004. Memphis led by 12 points at halftime, but Paul Millsap led a strong comeback in the second half to defeat the Tigers, 64-55. Millsap recorded a game-high 19 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Memphis got their revenge the following season, upending the Bulldogs 76-58 as they were ranked No. 4 in the country. In between these two series, the two teams almost played again. Had LA Tech beaten Oklahoma in overtime in the 1985 Sweet Sixteen, they would have played the No. 2 seed Memphs in the Elite Eight. VERSUS THE AAC Of the 12 current members of the American Athletic Conference, LA Tech has at some point been conference foes with Central Florida (1990-92 in the America South), East Carolina (2013-14 in C-USA), SMU (2001-05 in the WAC), Tulane (2013-14 in C-USA) and Tulsa (2001-05 in the WAC and 2013-14 in C-USA). The most recent AAC opponent the Bulldogs faced was Temple last season. The two played in Philadelphia in the second game of the regular season with the Owls winning, 82-75, as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. They played again in Philly in the NIT Quarterfinals with Temple coming out on top again, 77-59.

HOME SWEET HOME
Since February of 2012, the best home court advantage in the country for Division I college basketball has not been at Cameron Indoor Stadium (Duke), McKale Center (Arizona), KFC Yum! Center (Louisville), Rupp Arena (Kentucky), Breslin Center (Michigan State), The Pit (New Mexico), Carrier Dome (Syracuse), Viejas Arena (San Diego State), Charles Koch Arena (Wichita State), McCarthey Athletic Center (Gonzaga), Kohl Center (Wisconsin) or even Allen Fieldhouse (Kansas). Nope, the best home court advantage since then has been inside the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, Louisiana. During that time span, the Bulldogs own the highest winning percentage of anyone in the country (23 of the 52 wins have been by 20+ points). MR. AND-1
88 WINS
HAMILTON WINS, PLAIN AND SIMPLE Alex Hamilton never lost a single game in three years at Roulhac Middle School. He never lost a single game in two years at Chipley High School. And he has rarely lost at Louisiana Tech. The two-time All-Conference USA selection has been a part of 88 wins as a Bulldog, a winning percentage of 79%. He needs only 14 more victories this season to surpass Raheem Appleby, Michale Kyser and Speedy Smith as the all-time winningest player in program history.
THERE’S A REASON WHY THEY CALL HIM MR. AND-1 As a freshman, Hamilton led the team in free throws made (88) and attempted (122) despite averaging just 17.6 minutes per game. As a sophomore, the 226 attempts was 24 percent of the team’s total free throw shooting and his 164 makes set the sophomore single season record. Last season, he totaled 209 attempts (29 percent of the team’s). No game was as impressive as when he set the school record with 20 made free throws and tied the record with 23 attempts in a win over Middle Tennessee (1/17). The 20 was also an NCAA-best in a single game that season. For his career, he has attempted at least 10 free throws in a single game 16 different times. Career Free Throws Attempted 1. 2015-16 LOUISIANA TECH MEN’S BASKETBALL
TEAM NOTES
KONKOL BEGINS HEAD COACHING CAREER IN RIGHT DIRECTION Despite the Bulldogs losing five players off last year’s squad, including C-USA Player of the Year Speedy Smith, three-time all conference guard Raheem Appleby and three-time all-defensive team member Michale Kyser, and being a new coach blending a new philosophy and the standard of excellence already in place, Eric Konkol has already accomplished something few Bulldog coaches have. After the win versus North Carolina Central, Konkol became just the second head coach in program history to win their first five games at the helm.
REPLACING THE BIG THREE
Jerseys bearing the numbers 1, 3 and 4 will still be seen on Karl Malone Court this season, however there will be different players wearing them then what fans are used to.
L.P. McLane (1934-35) Eric Konkol (2015-16)
Michale Kyser, Raheem Appleby and Speedy Smith left a lasting legacy on the Bulldog Basketball program as they became the all-time winningest players in program history with 101 wins over their four-year careers.
DERRIC JEAN IMPRESSING EARLY Bulldog fans are already buzzing about true freshman Derric Jean from Miami, Florida. While they are seeing the future, Jean is already making a huge impact on the team and their 4-0 record.
Speedy finished as the all-time assist (858) and steals (258) leader, Kyser finished as the alltime blocks (363) leader and Appleby finished with the sixth most career points (1,770).
The point guard has come off the bench to score in double digits in the first three games -- 14 versus Millsaps College, 12 versus UT Arlington and 11 at Grambling State. He is the first freshman to do so, not since Paul Millsaps, but in 20 years since Lonnie Cooper (1995-96).
All three are now playing professionally. Kyser -- Raptors905 (NBA D-League) Appleby -- Apollon-Limassol (Cyprus) Smith -- VEF Riga (Latvia)
Jean only scored four points in the fourth game at Ohio State, but he made the most of one field goal by dunking on three Buckeyes which earned him the No. 3 play on ESPN’s Sportscenter. MCREE AND HAMILTON NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE USA TEAM
Louisiana Tech was one of only two teams to have multiple players named Preseason All-Conference as guard Alex Hamilton and forward Erik McCree were selected to the 10-person Conference USA team, voted on by the league coaches. Both players started all 36 games last season for LA Tech, helping the Bulldogs earn the outright C-USA regular season title and an appearance in the NIT quarterfinals. Hamilton, the only repeat preseason selection, earned second team All-Conference USA and second team NABC All-District 11 honors in 2014. The senior produced eight 20+ scoring performances, including five with at least 27 points which was the most in the conference. He also registered 62 steals which tied for the fourth most in a single season in school history. After sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, McCree finished third on the team in scoring with an average of 11.4 points per game. The redshirt junior was the team’s leading scorer in eight games, including a career-high 26 versus UAB. He was also second in rebounds for the `Dogs with 5.6 boards per game and ended up posting three double-doubles. LA Tech was picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll behind UAB, Old Dominion, Middle Tennessee and UTEP.

2015-16 LOUISIANA TECH MEN’S BASKETBALL DEFENSE UNDER WHITE/KONKOL A standard of excellence on defense was set by Michael White and will be continued by Eric Konkol. In the last four seasons-plus, the defense has forced at least 15 turnovers in over half of the games played (89 out of 146). The Bulldogs are 75-14 in those contests. The defense has cranked up even more in some games, forcing at least 20 turnovers 34 times, including 21 against Millsaps College in the regular season opener and 22 versus North Carolina Central. Opponents turnover average 17.8 TOs 2015-16 15.6 TOs 2014-15 16.4 TOs 2013-14 17.4 TOs 2012-13 15.1 TOs 2011-12 16.5 combined turnover average PRESSURE, PRESSURE, PRESSURE Pressure is the name of the game for the Bulldogs. From baseline to baseline, LA Tech pressures the ball and as the defense goes, the wins usually follow. LA Tech is a perfect 41-0 in the last four-plus seasons when holding their opponents under 60 points. 7 times 2011-12 11 times 2012-13 11 times 2013-14 11 times 2014-15 2 times 2015-16 TURNOVER MARGIN A KEY TO SUCCESS Over the past four years, the Bulldogs have been unleashed on defense with their own version of 40 minutes of hell. They have had a +10 turnover margin in 28 games, resulting in a record of 26-2. In the prior 28 seasons combined, it was done in only 21 games. YEAR RANK TO MARGIN # OF TIMES +10 MARGIN 2015-16 N/A +6.8 two times 2014-15 5th +4.8 ten times 2013-14 6th +4.9 six times 2012-13 6th +5.0 eight times 2011-12 54th +2.1 two times MONEY WITH A LEAD Over the last four-plus seasons, the numbers say you should never let the Bulldogs have a lead at halftime if you want to beat them. You should definitely never let them have a lead with 10 minutes left and you should never ever let them have a lead with five minutes to go.

TEAMS WHO WON THEIR LAST THREE CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON TITLES
Leading at Halftime -- 82-10 Leading with 10 minutes to go -- 89-7 Leading with 5 minutes to go -- 97-1 “WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE #DUNKINDOGS” -- ERIC KONKOL The phrase Dunkin’ Dogs was coined during the 1982-83 season when Karl “The Mailman” Malone and “Big Will” Simmons threw down dunk after dunk after dunk. What followed was a run of nine 20-win seasons and nine straight postseason appearances (five NCAA, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 1985, and four NIT appearances, including a Final Four appearance in 1986). The Dunkin’ Dogs came and went over the next two decades, but reappeared in full force starting in the 2012-13 season when they recorded 96 slams. The 2013-14 team eclipsed that mark even more with 138 dunks. That was followed by a new record of 142 slams this past season. Compare that to national champion Duke who had 123 dunks.
TEAMS WITH AT LEAST 27 WINS EACH OF THE PAST THREE SEASONS
During Eric Konkol’s introductory press conference, he assured LA Tech fans that we would continue to be the Dunkin’ Dogs. That statement held true in the exhibition game as the Bulldogs threw down six dunks versus Southwest Baptist.

The Bulldogs have never been afraid to go on the road in non-conference and play power 5 schools. Other times, they are given the added opportunity to showcase their talent during the postseason and have taken full advantage of it.
AMERICA SOUTH CONFERENCE
With the recent victory at Ohio State, LA Tech is now the only non-power 5 team in the country to win at a power 5 school in each of the last four seasons (Gonzaga would become the second with a win at Washington State on Dec. 2). The Bulldogs also have 32 true road wins in the last threeplus seasons which is the second most in the country behind only Stephen F. Austin.

2012-13 (down goes the ACC) Won at Florida State in the first round of the NIT. Raheem Appleby scored a game-high 27 points. 2013-14 (down goes the Big XII and the SEC) Won at Oklahoma in overtime in the last road game of non-conference. 2015-16 LOUISIANA TECH MEN’S BASKETBALL SO CLOSE TO MAKING NCAA TOURNAMENT; MAKING THE BEST OF THE NIT The last four years have gone great for the Bulldogs, except when it came crunch time and things did not go their way in trying to get into the NCAA Tournament. Cases in point -2011-12 Lost in WAC Tournament championship to New Mexico State. 2012-13 Lost last three games of the season, including being upset in WAC Tournament quarterfinals as No. 1 seed by UTSA. Missed out on at-large bid with 26-6 record (prior to postseason). Defeated Florida State before falling at Southern Miss in the second round of the NIT. 2013-14 Lost in C-USA Tournament championship to Tulsa, 69-60, despite leading with 6:30 to go in 2nd half. Missed out on at-large bid with 27-7 record (prior to postseason). Defeated Iona and Georgia before falling at Florida State by three points in the NIT quarterfinals. 2014-15 Lost in overtime to UAB in the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament which was played in Birmingham. Defeated Central Michigan and Texas A&M before falling at Temple in the NIT quarterfinals. This year’s Bulldogs are back at it trying to make it for the first time in 25 years (1990-91 team). GET YOUR TELEVISIONS READY FOR THE BULLDOGS TV has fallen in love with the Bulldogs in recent years. For a second straight year, LA Tech will have 16 of its 31 games broadcast in some fashion with 15 on a cable TV network. The Dec. 22 game at Florida Gulf Coast will be streamed live on ESPN3. The number of TV games matches last years record, with 11 of the 18 C-USA games (one more than last season) being televised as well, including eight of the last nine. LA TECH, ADIDAS ANNOUNCE 5-YEAR APPAREL PARTNERSHIP #SWAG #THREESTRIPES In an announcement on Nov. 18, Louisiana Tech and adidas established a 5-year exclusive agreement worth $3.025 million that will outfit all 16 NCAA men’s and women’s programs in adidas uniforms, footwear, apparel and equipment through the 2020-21 season. adidas is the official provider for more than 100 collegiate programs such as Louisville, Wisconsin, UCLA, Kansas Texas A&M, Nebraska, Indiana, Arizona State and North Carolina State. The ‘Dogs last wore adidas in the 2006-07 season, but switched to Nike the following season. LEFTIES UNITE The Bulldog basketball team probably makes plenty of baseball coaches jealous with the number of left-handers they have on the roster. According to online sources, only about 10 percent of the general human population is left-handed. A total of four Bulldogs (31%) out of 13 shoot left-handed which includes Alex Hamilton, Erik McCree, Jacobi Boykins and Joniah White. Alex can also shoot right-handed since he is ambidextrous. LOUISIANA IS THE NEW SUNSHINE STATE There are only two players on the LA Tech roster from Louisiana. Then there are not one, not two, not three, not four but five players from Florida. Alex Hamilton is from Chipley in the panhandle. Erik McCree grew up next to Disney World in Orlando. Dayon Griffin and Jacobi Boykins followed in the foot steps of Speedy Smith and came to Ruston by way of St. Petersburg. The Florida pipeline continued this past summer with the Bulldogs signing Derric Jean out of Miami which just so happens to be where Eric Konkol lived the past four years as an assistant coach for the Hurricanes. This season, this group should have plenty of family and friends in attendance when they revisit their beloved Sunshine State with trips to Fort Myers (at Florida Gulf Coast), Miami (at FIU) and Boca Raton (at Florida Atlantic).

2015-16 LOUISIANA TECH MEN’S BASKETBALL FORMER LA TECH LEGEND PAUL MILLSAP MAKING HIS MARK IN THE NBA Louisiana Tech basketball is proud to call Paul Millsap one of their own. Millsap was named an NBA All-Star for the second straight year and earned third team All-NBA after leading the Atlanta Hawks to a franchise-record 60 wins, a Southeast Division championship and the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. He led the Hawks in scoring and rebounding with an average of 16.7 and 7.8 per game, respectively. As a Bulldog, Millsap was a three-time All-WAC selection and became the first player to ever lead the NCAA in rebounding three consecutive years. He has been recognized for the past five years and seven of the past eight as the recipient of the Bob Pettit Award by the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC) which goes out annually to the most outstanding professional basketball player from a Louisiana college. BULLDOGS PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY Paul Millsap may be the only former Bulldog playing in the NBA, but there are plenty others playing professionally all over the globe. Then you had the Bulldog Football team who made Dallas #BulldogCountry on Dec. 26, 2014 when they defeated Illinois in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl. It only made since that head coach Eric Konkol decided to make Dallas #BulldogCountry himself by signing three players to NLI’s from that area in the early signing period. Oliver Powell 6’8” 200 lbs. Dallas, Texas (Rowlett High School) As a junior, averaged 14.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while being named first team all-district and the district defensive player of the year. Dallas, Texas (Lancaster High School) As a junior, averaged 11 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals. Registered eight points and eight rebounds as the Tigers defeated Beaumont Ozen, 59-47, to win the UIL State Class 5A boys championship. Ranked as the 32nd best player in Texas by TexasHoops.com. Konkol, and the coaching staff added a curveball with their last signee, nabbing point guard DaQuan Bracey from Baltimore. DaQuan Bracey 5’10” 170 lbs. Baltimore, Md. (St. Frances Academy) As a junior, averaged 15 points, 7.0 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 steals. Led Panthers to semifinals of the Baltimore Catholic League Tournament.
