Art Quilt Maps: Capture a Sense of Place with Fiber Collage-A Visual Guide by Valerie Goodwin Drawing Supplies o One roll of 18" (or wider) tracing paper o Black Micron Pens or equivalent, sizes 01 (025 mm), 03 (0.35 mm), and 05 (0.45 mm) o Sharpies, black red, blue and green Painting Supplies o Inexpensive flat artist brushes, ranging in size from 1/4" to 1" o Inexpensive 2" house painters brush o A few foam stencil brushes o Inexpensive sponge o Painters tape o Plastic cups or plates for mixing o Inexpensive rubber gloves o A few plastic garbage bags Paint o Fabric paints in primary colors plus black and white (or a set of muted colors that you like) OR o Acrylic paints in primary colors plus black and white and a bottle of GAC 900 Fabric Medium or similar Sewing supplies o Small, sharp fabric scissors o Thread for machine sewing, black, white, gray and any other colors that you favor from your stash o Decorative threads for hand sewing from your stash o Hand sewing needles o Thimble o Pins o Medium size rotary cutter o Gridded rotary cutting ruler o Misty-Fuse ▪ 1/2 yd. white ▪ 1/4 yd. black o Teflon Sheet or parchment paper o Sewing machine with free-motion foot Fabric o Varied solid fabrics - light, medium, and dark muted values. You will need more light and dark fabrics than medium fabrics. o 1/2 yd each of black, white, and gray silk organza (Sources include Vogue Fabrics, Denver Fabrics, Thai Silks) o Optional, Kimono scraps (Sources include KimoYES, Laura Murray Designs) Maps and Images o Hard copy maps of your chosen place (Sources include Snazzy Maps, Mappery, Google Maps, Bing Maps, Google Earth, Maps.Stamen. Also, some cities have their own GIS map sites, so try an internet search like GIS+Chicago.) o If possible, hard copy or digital photographs of your place. For instance, if your chosen place is your home, bring images of the front of your home, a special tree, or a nearby pond for context. o Bring a few black and white copies of your maps/photos at slightly different sizes to give you more options. (Kinko's or Target Copy can do this for you.)
