Annapolis Watercolor Club February 2014 PRESIDENT’S VIEWPOINT Well we are off to a good start in this New Year. We started off with just one room to use for our show at the State House, and gained two hallways. This is good exposure for our club and a nice venue overall. Just think, people are walking down the hallway, looking at our paintings every day during and after work. I hope everybody made it to the opening. Check out our photos of the event on our web site. Speaking of our web site, how many of you out there use it to your advantage? There is a lot of information concerning our shows on our web site, as well as news about our member’s outings or classes, and lots of photos of our events...AND if you want to be more environmentally conscious, instead of getting our newsletter mailed to you, just download it off the internet. As previously mentioned during our last meeting, I had the opportunity to go to a generous Eastern Shore artist’s studio, Ms. Hai-Ou Hou, on New Year’s Day. You can see the photos on our web site. Ms. Hai-Ou was kind enough to invite us to come and paint still life or models in her studio. There is a small fee to paint in her studio, to help defray the cost of heat or air conditioning. At present, available time slots are being filled up pretty quickly. If club members want to plan a workshop or AWC event at her studio, they will need to do so in the very near future. If anyone has any suggestions as to what, where (the studio) or when, please send me an email with that information. The studio is on the Eastern Shore and HUGE!. I am sure the everyone will really enjoy the space and will feel inspired whilst painting. A last note: we still need volunteers for our basic set up, collect, take down, event managing and organization for our shows. We also need one or two members to take charge of the publicity aspect of AWC. Please STEP UP and support our cause. You will not regret it! - Nadine Vauthier, President, AWC

February 2014 Demonstrator Stewart White Our February demonstrator will be Stuart White who will be painting a landscape subject . . . . he will be describing some of the basic guidelines that he uses to choose an appropriate subject, identifying the kind of washes that he uses and discussing the strategy for arriving at a stopping point. Website: http://stewartwhitestudios.com Bio Stewart White grew up in so many different parts of the US and Europe that it is hard to call any one place a home of origin. As a result, he was exposed to many cultures, languages, Art Museums and topographies ranging from high mountains of Colorado to the deserts of Tunisia. Stewart attended Pratt Institute for one year and then served in the Army from 1973-1975. After the Army he moved to Colorado and attended various colleges and University eventually ending up at the university of California at Berkeley. With a background in home building and art the logical career choice became Architectural Illustration. Stewart has also produced many murals for Museums and Institutions. Of note, the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History and the U S Naval Academy. Stewart has won many top awards in national Painting competitions. He is a member of the American Impressionists Society, The American Watercolor Society, and a Signature member of the National Watercolor Society and past President of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (2012). He is currently a Senior Associate at Design Collective, Inc., a top award winning architectural firm in Baltimore, which he now calls home.—Sue Corrigan-Yo, Vice President, AWC

MEMBERSHIP NEWS It was nice to see Susan Levin rejoin AWC after a short absence! There are still dues receipts in a lot of the name tags. Please remember to remove them if you come for the February meeting. Also please remember to let me know of any changes to your e-mail address, home address or telephone numbers. Karen tells me we always have a few e-mail addresses that pop back when she tries to send the newsletter. We try very hard to have accurate information so that we can get newsletters delivered and information to our members. Sometimes computers seem to have minds of their own but we do want you to know that we are making a huge effort. Also please keep in mind that my membership chair will be finished in January 2015. This is a great way to participate, get to know members and help out AWC. Consider this volunteer position and spread the word that it will be available! Remember we can’t have a great organization without volunteers! - Rita Grau, AWC Membership Chair 2014 Dates to Keep in Mind: DEMONSTRATORS for the MONTHLY MEETINGS February: Stewart White March: Carolyn Counsel April: “Spring Fling”. . . THANK YOU NEIL HARPE! I would like to say a huge thank you to Neil Harpe, our January demonstrator, for showing us his beautifully executed approach to painting in a ‘traditional realistic style’. His limited palette and understated representational approach was a refreshing change and proof that realism is alive and well. The Olive green touches at the end shone through the sparkling white and blue water bringing it to life. Many thank s Neil! - Sue Corrigan-Yo, Vice President, AWC

STEWART WHITE ARTIST STATEMENT “My interest in Plein-air painting began as an inquiry on the nature of light and its interaction with objects in space. From those initial sketches, studies and paintings, I was further led to inquire about other formal elements of painting and the question,” What makes a good picture?” and “What inspires me about a particular image or view of nature?” By painting outdoors, I am constantly in the middle of this inquiry and from time to time, I occasionally get answers. Each medium has its own voice and its own eloquence and one cannot effectively imitate the other. I enjoy drawing, painting with watercolor and with oils outdoors. But, by far, watercolor holds my interest the longest. It is an all consuming period of focused painting and observation. There is the observation of nature and the observation of what the paint and water are doing before me. My challenges are to integrate the natural world observations and translate my impressions on paper being attentive to the flow of water, pigment, the absorption rate of paper the humidity in the air, the limits of the brush, the quality of edges, the illusions of space, the mixing of color, the list goes on. Impressionism continues for this reason, that there are no lack of challenges. Another aspect of painting “en plein-air” is the element of social interaction. It is an essentially positive message. The image of a painter painting a scene enlivens the general landscape and engages passersby in the most unique ways. People are given the opportunity to compare their own responses to nature and may be inspired to paint themselves and they are collectively having an artistic experience by comparing and looking. In this way, plein-air painting is a form of performance and a public interactive art form. Sketching and painting is a universal language. It is a passport to many other cultures and has few barriers.” Stewart Burgess White

Workshop News in 2014: Stewart Burgess White, 1 March 2014 The workshop with Stewart White filled in record time. As I have only just taken over as Workshop Co-chair, this is tremendously rewarding for me. I hope to be able to engage equally popular artists to join us for our future workshops. To help me in this, I would really appreciate suggestions from as many of you as possible. Should we have advanced or beginners levels for instance? We could have a framing workshop or an “en plein air” day. I know you will all have suggestions and preferences. The May 17 date is still open to your requests and ideas but we need to decide soon. Perhaps we should have an encore event, subject to the artist being available... This is our Club and we can do great things if each of us is just a little pro-active so please eMail me and let me know what your preference would be .- June Poole, Co-chair Workshops, [email protected]
