FUMC MONROE NEWS

CONNECTING PEOPLE TO NEW LIFE, NEW HOPE AND NEW BEGINNINGS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

LYNN’S LINES Do you know who Jesus is? Seems like an easy question, doesn’t it? Yet, when we’re asked we don’t quite know how to answer. Worse yet, we won’t ask others the question because we don’t know the answer ourselves. Is Jesus just a really good man? Is Jesus simply a prophet, another man of God in a long line of men (and women) of God? How we answer the question says much about what we ultimately believe, and what we believe always impacts how we act. In the new sermon series Jesus is…, Chris and I will take the four weeks of February to reflect on four primary characteristics of the person and work of Jesus Christ. C. S. Lewis famously wrote in his classic book Mere Christianity these challenging words: “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

REV. LYNN MALONE SENIOR PASTOR

First, we’ll see that Jesus is…Lord. What does it mean for disciples of Jesus to call him Lord, and how does that understanding order our lives as disciples? Second, we’ll discover that Jesus is…Savior. What does it mean to call Jesus Savior, and what exactly did he come to save? Third, we’ll seek to understand that Jesus is…Healer. We pray and invite others to pray, but it often seems as though our prayers for healing go unanswered. If Jesus is Healer, why is that so? Finally, we discover that Jesus is…Friend. We’ll explore the facets of Jesus’ love and grace that accompanies us throughout our lives, and see that He really does call us friend. Please join us each Sunday in February for this exciting new worship series. Additionally, one of our community ministry partners, Habitat for Humanity is teaming with rehabilitation projects throughout Ouachita Parish as a result of the floods in spring 2016. They are calling for volunteers to help with these projects beginning in late February. Be watching the newsletter, worship folder, Facebook page, the FUMC app and www.fumcmonroela.org website for details. Your help is greatly needed right here in Ouachita Parish! Until next time, keep looking up…
