Mavericks Host Wildcats in Final Regular-Season Home Games

Off the Hop: Minnesota State (16-10-4 overall, 12-8-4 WCHA) closes out its home regular-season schedule this weekend with Northern Michigan (11-17-4 overall, 9-12-3 WCHA) visiting the Key City. The Mavericks and the Wildcats are slated to play at Verizon Center (4,832) in downtown Mankato Friday (7:07 p.m. CST) and Saturday (7:07 p.m. CST).

About the Minnesota State-Northern Michigan Series: Minnesota State stands 7-3-3 all-time vs. Northern Michigan. The Mavericks went 1-1-2 in four games vs. NMU last year and the two games this weekend mark the only regular-season contests the Mavericks will have with the Wildcats this year. The first game in the series between the two schools was played back in 2013-14. Minnesota State Most Recently: The Mavericks, who have gone 7-4-2 in the last 13 games, were idle this last weekend after splitting a two-game road league series (4-3 loss and 5-0 win) at Alaska Anchorage the previous weekend. About Northern Michigan: One of the hottest teams in the nation, the Wildcats come to Mankato riding a nine-game unbeaten streak during which they've gone 7-0-2. NMU stands 11-17-4 overall and are tied for sixth place in the WCHA standings with a 9-12-3 conference record mark. Northern Michigan hosted the University of Alaska last weekend and posted 3-0 and 2-0 wins vs. the visiting Nanooks. NMU is paced offensively by junior forward Robbie Payne (12-13--25) and senior forward Dominik Shine (16-6--22). Sophomore goaltender Atte Tolvanen (10-17-4, 2.40, .923 sv%), who has tied a NCAA record with five consecutive shutouts (335.39 minutes in a row), has started 28 of NMU's 32 games this year. The Wildcats are led head coach Walt Kyle (NMU '81), who stands 263-258-68 as a college head coach (this is 15th year with Northern Michigan). The Mavericks are in their 21st year as members of NCAA Division I and in their 18th season as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks are 852-632-152 (.567) all-time and stand 223-216-61 (.507) in regular-season games vs. WCHA opponents. Six Seniors Play in Final Regular-Season Home Series: Playing in their final regular-season home games this weekend are senior defensemen Carter Foguth and Sean Flanagan, goaltender Cole Huggins and forwards Zach Stepan, Jordan Nelson and Michael Huntebrinker. All told, entering this weekend, the six players have totalled 721 games played, 68 goals and 143 assists for 261 points, 92 wins, two MacNaughton Cups, two Broadmoor Trophies and two trips to the NCAA postseason. With Minnesota State women's hockey and Ohio State tied at 3-3 through the first nine rounds of a shootout, junior forward Amanda Conway made Minnesota State's 10th attempt and senior goaltender Brianna Quade stopped Ohio State's final try by junior defenseman Jessica Dunne to secure a 4-3 shootout win for Minnesota State on Friday night at Ohio State Ice Rink. The Mavericks (6-22-4, 3-19-3-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) and the Buckeyes (11-15-5, 5-15-5-2 WCHA) tied 1-1 through 65:00 of play before the shootout. Each team earned one point in the WCHA standings from the tie, with the Mavericks earning a second point in the conference from the shootout victory. The shootout win is the first for the Mavericks since Oct. 19, 2012 against Minnesota Duluth. Minnesota State scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the first period. Freshman forward Demi Gardner (4-0--4) scored for the second straight game on the Mavericks' first power play of the evening at 16:12 of the period. Junior defenseman Anna Keys (2-7--9) and freshman defenseman Jordan Jackson (1-2--3) assisted on the play. However, the Mavericks were unable to get another shot past the Buckeyes' sophomore netminder Kassidy Sauve(11-14-5), who made 24 saves in the game. Quade (3-16-3), who tallied 40 saves in the game for the Mavericks, made at least 30 saves for the 10th time this season and reached 40 saves for the second time in 2016-17, but the Buckeyes broke through with their lone goal of the evening at 15:14 of the third period to tie the score at 1-1. Sophomore forward Maddy Field (9-13--22) scored and freshman forward Rebecca Freiburger (6-4--10) assisted on the play. Neither team was able to score in the final minutes of regulation or in overtime – forcing the shootout. After neither team was successful in the first round of the shootout, Keys put the Mavericks up 1-0 with a make in the second round. The Buckeyes tied the shootout at 1-1 when junior forward Julianna Iafallo was successful in the third round. Sophomore forward Steph Keryluk answered for the Mavericks with a successful attempt to start the fourth round, but junior forward Lauren Spring responded for Ohio State in the fourth round to tie the score at 2-2. Neither team was able to score in the shootout from rounds five through eight. Junior forward Hannah Davidson briefly put the Mavericks up 3-2 in the ninth round, but senior forward Breanne Grant tied the shootout at 3-3 in the Buckeyes ninth attempt. In the 10th round, Conway converted for Minnesota State and Quade made the final stop to secure the shootout win for Minnesota State. Gardner, Keys, and Jackson each recorded a point for the second consecutive game for Minnesota State.

Ohio State 4

Minnesota State women's hockey scored two third period goals, but was unable to overcome a 4-0 deficit and lost to Ohio State 4-2 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game on Saturday afternoon at Ohio State University Ice Rink. Neither the Mavericks (6-23-4, 3-20-3 WCHA) or the Buckeyes (12-15-5, 6-15-5-2) were able find the back of the net in the first period. Ohio State took control in the second period – scoring three unanswered goals to put Minnesota State in a 3-0 hole at the end of two periods. Junior forward Julianna Iafallo (5-8--13), Jessica Dunne (4-5--9) and Breanne Grant (2-1--3) scored at 10:28, 14:04 and 16:40, respectively. Senior forward Katie Matheny (6-1--7) scored the Buckeyes fourth and final goal at 8:27 of the third period. The Mavericks fought back with two goals of their own in the third period. Sophomore forward Steph Keryluk (1-1--2) scored her first goal of the season – the second of her career – at 11:28 of the third period. Junior forward Sara Bustad (3-3--6), who has recorded career highs for goals, assists and points in a single season, assisted on the play. The second Minnesota State goal was scored by junior forward Hannah Davidson (3-7--10) – the active Maverick career leader in goals (17), assists (25) and points (42) – at 16:40 of the period. Junior defenseman Anna Keys (2-8--10), who ranks fifth all-time amongst Maverick defenseman with 29 career points, and freshman forward Demi Gardner (4-1--5), who extended her point streak to three games, recorded her first career assist on the play. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer and the Buckeyes held on for the 4-2 victory. Senior goaltender Brianna Quade (3-17-2), who eclipsed 30 saves for the 11th time this season, made 31 saves for Minnesota State, while sophomore Kassidy Sauve (12-14-5) stopped 24 shots for Ohio State. The Mavericks return to action for a two-game WCHA series at Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m., on Friday and 3:07 p.m., on Saturday.

21 Mavericks named WCHA Scholar-Athletes

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has announced that 21 Minnesota State student-athletes have been selected as WCHA Scholar-Athletes for the 2016-17 season. Selections from the men's team included sophomore defenseman Daniel Brickley (Sandy, Utah) sophomore forward Max Coatta (Minnetonka, Minn.), senior defenseman Sean Flanagan (Kindersley, Sask.), senior defenseman Carter Foguth (Fenton, Mich.) senior goaltender Cole Huggins (Centennial, Colo.), sophomore forward Chandler Madry (Bakersfield, Calif.) junior goaltender Aaron Nelson (Bismarck, N.D.), senior forward Jordan Nelson (Williston, N.D.), sophomore forward Ryan Schwalbe (Anchorage, Alaska) and sophomore defenseman Alec Vanko (Oregon, Wis.) On the women's side, sophomore forward Emily Antony (Plymouth, Minn.), sophomore goaltender Katie Bidulka (Oakville, Ont.), sophomore forward Corbin Boyd (Minnetonka, Minn.), junior forward Lindsey Coleman (Savage, Minn.), junior forward Hannah Davidson (Kincardine, Ont.),sophomore defenseman Lena Duesterhoeft (Munich, Germany), senior defenseman Anna Fiegert (Landshut, Germany), junior defenseman Anna Keys (Cottage Grove, Minn.), junior forward Amanda Martin (Peoria, Ariz.), senior goaltender Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.), and senior forward Savannah Quandt (Mankato, Minn.) were selected. Fiegert, Flanagan, Huggins and Jordan Nelson received the distinction for the third time in their careers. Aaron Nelson, Keys and Martin are second-time recipients of the award, while Antony, Bidulka, Boyd, Brickley, Coatta, Coleman, Davidson, Duesterhoeft, Foguth, Madry, Quade, Quandt Schwalbe and Vanko earned the honor for the first time. To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, conference-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters, or may qualify if his/her overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.
